I respectfully disagree. Mirren is one of my favorite female actors and I love everything she has done. This was rightfully Wiest's. It is one of the best supporting performances of any year. Mirren should have two oscars though. Besides winning for The Queen, she also should have won in 2002 for Gosford Park. I also feel strongly that Mirren should have been nominated in 2004 for The Clearing.

Dianne Wiest is wonderful and deserved the Oscar. She transformed into a character so completely unlike herself and was hilarious. And she was so beautiful in the movie. That shot of her in the park on the bench with Cusack. Now that's beauty!

I don't think Helen Mirren was so very well-known then. She had done a few arty films and "White Nights", but nothing to alert Hollywood at the time. Luckily we caught onto her talent.
