this is one of my all time favourite films, i got it onDVD and old skool VHS lol...Dorothy Dandridge was the first black american woman to be up for an Oscar in Hollywood...she was talented, very very beautiful and had an amazing voice....she isnt recognised enough in these days
@tanaj2009 The song is very famous, from a spanish habanera, an Opera called "Carmen". This is the african american version of that song so you have heard it probably dozens of time throughout your life on different commercials, tv shows and movies.
I think Marilyn was either 20 or 21 when she performed this. Since the voice matures so much after your early 20's, her voice grew into the Marilyn sound we know. If you listen to early Leontyne recordings in her 20's, you will notice a difference too in her voice after her 20's. Marilyn is a bad chick! Her range is phenomenal.
I hate the whole " Den" and "Dat" talk... Of course they had to make it look as if black folks couldn't speak properly. Other than that love this movie!
Not necessarily, many people in the South spoke that way, and Black English was also using this type of D instead of Th, it isnt a lack of speaking properly, just a regional or ethnic group dialect, nothing more...plus that was very common in Oscar and Hammerstein music...south pacific had "da" same thing
@heyjana That's the only problem I am having with it so far. I would love to watch it, but she sounds so crazy proper when she says them that it is jarring lol.
Acutally, Carmen Jones was digitally remastered in high definition, released on DVD a few years back, and has been on cable several times since the remastering. Pam Grier films are hit or miss though.
Folks I heard Marilyn Horne sing this song and believe me it is not the same voice on this movie which has Dorothy's voice singing it Don't believe me google Marilyn Horne.
This is not the voice of Dorothy Dandridge. Research it for yourself. Neither Dorothy or Harry (both of whom were astonishing vocalists) sang one note. This is contemporary opera -- not 2 be misconstrued with symphonic opera. Kinda' like Beyonce's
version - You know, it was a "Hip-HOpera." This was the Hip-HOpera of its day.
IT WAS & IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And YES - it is the voice of Marily Horn - no relation to Lena. Can't hurt to thoroughly research something. Try it!
The producer wanted operatic range for the leads — something neither Dorothy Dandridge nor Harry Belafonte has. Other actors, such as Pearl Bailey, sang their own parts. Supporting actors who also sing, such as Diahann Carroll, were also dubbed.
this song is from Carmen the opera. they've changed the lyrics, which i think makes it even worse now that it isn't opera. the opera version is incredible.
Duh! This is from Otto Premenger's (sp?) Carmen Jones in 1954. It is an American classic in its own right. Its not supposed to be simply an English version of Bizet's Carmen. It's a unique reworking of the story utilizing black Americans within a part of black American and general American culture of the 50's. You should check it out with that in mind.
This version made me appreciate the original that much more because of the context it was put in [or in which it was put].
why do people keep bringing up marilyn horne? Everybody knows this already. it's like they say it to take something away from Dorothy Dandridge. I doubt marilyn could have made that song as sexy or powerful on the screen, whether she sang it or not.
I think they are mentioning Marilyn Horne 1.) because you don't see her. 2.) Her vocal performance and artistry help bring this movie to life, and they are as impressive as the acting going on in the scene. 3.) She has fans, just like Dorothy that are proud of this work, too.
I think that Dorothy & Marilyn is one of the GREAT collaborations in musical film and it should be talkeda bout more. You can't really dissect Dorothy's performance in Carmen Jones without talking about the way she and Marilyn Horne essentially became one person, particularly in this scene. Phenomenal work from both.
Saleema1: Dorothy Dandridge and Herry Belafonte, though singers, did not have operatic voices. Marilyn Horne, who went on to become one of the US's greatest opera stars, was 19 when she did the singing for this film.
if you don't like the english version of the song then don't listen. escribo en espanol para su, pendejo/idioso. Carmen la cantana de opera en ingles o espanol es mucho hermoso. digo yo, Dorothy dandridge es muy guapa y la cinema is bien. con amor
I finally got to watch this movie - a bit cheesy but great performances from Dorothy Dandridge. This particular is a milestone performance. Miss Dandridge was definetly one of a kind. I appreciate her beauty, monstrous talent and charismatic spirit.
