  • God this is Halle Berry the orginal

  • this is one of my all time favourite films, i got it onDVD and old skool VHS lol...Dorothy Dandridge was the first black american woman to be up for an Oscar in Hollywood...she was talented, very very beautiful and had an amazing voice....she isnt recognised enough in these days

  • @FreekyNChic mine 2! =). we should all remember her more often.

  • Was this song on like a bounty commercial or something!

  • @tanaj2009 The song is very famous, from a spanish habanera, an Opera called "Carmen". This is the african american version of that song so you have heard it probably dozens of time throughout your life on different commercials, tv shows and movies.

  • Her singing was dubbed by Marylin Horne

  • A 1954 movie

  • Oscar Hammerstein, book & lyrics. His writing partner, Richard Rodgers, wasn't involved in this.

  • the best scene and actress ever except for Josephine BAker ACTING....lol....as long as two couples can be paired by conveniance....allrighty

  • i love this movie i just saw it 2day im 18 this movie rocks

  • ZoZ

    RoR

  • Is this Marylin Horne's voice? How does such a sweet voice going into near contralto...????

  • I think Marilyn was either 20 or 21 when she performed this. Since the voice matures so much after your early 20's, her voice grew into the Marilyn sound we know. If you listen to early Leontyne recordings in her 20's, you will notice a difference too in her voice after her 20's. Marilyn is a bad chick! Her range is phenomenal.

  • Dorothy Dandridge!-I could live with her in solitude and need no one else.

  • haha dats not LOVE, it means he doesnt want you!

  • I hate the whole " Den" and "Dat" talk... Of course they had to make it look as if black folks couldn't speak properly. Other than that love this movie!

  • Not necessarily, many people in the South spoke that way, and Black English was also using this type of D instead of Th, it isnt a lack of speaking properly, just a regional or ethnic group dialect, nothing more...plus that was very common in Oscar and Hammerstein music...south pacific had "da" same thing

  • @heyjana

it was being true to the times and culture.

  • @heyjana That's the only problem I am having with it so far. I would love to watch it, but she sounds so crazy proper when she says them that it is jarring lol.

  • poor cindy lou......

  • Cindy Lou had several opportunities throughout the film to smack a bitch, and didnt. She lost what wasnt hers in the first place! lol

  • cindy lou shoulda jumped up and gave carmen the ol one two punch!!!!lol

  • i love classic black movies. Dorthy Dandridge, pam grier. It is going to be hard to find these movies

  • Acutally, Carmen Jones was digitally remastered in high definition, released on DVD a few years back, and has been on cable several times since the remastering. Pam Grier films are hit or miss though.

  • Definately agree. very different, distinct genres- those two are casted into

  • I have Diana Ross' Mahagony and I LOVE IT. Get it ladies.

  • perfect loved it

  • awesome

  • love it

  • That IS love...damn

  • Dorothy Dandridge was luminous in this movie !

and her doing the famous "Habanera" from Georges Beizet's tragic opera "Carmen" is unforgettable.

  • omg

    i love this scene

dorothy is sensational on this film

  • movie is so tragedy, thats love 4 ya though. I'll sing this song for a month now that I have listened to it again

  • "Give me a chicken sandwich!"

The absurd insertion of that line always cracks me up.

  • Folks I heard Marilyn Horne sing this song and believe me it is not the same voice on this movie which has Dorothy's voice singing it Don't believe me google Marilyn Horne.

  • i think you mean lena horne

  • This is not the voice of Dorothy Dandridge. Research it for yourself. Neither Dorothy or Harry (both of whom were astonishing vocalists) sang one note. This is contemporary opera -- not 2 be misconstrued with symphonic opera. Kinda' like Beyonce's

version - You know, it was a "Hip-HOpera." This was the Hip-HOpera of its day.

    IT WAS & IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And YES - it is the voice of Marily Horn - no relation to Lena. Can't hurt to thoroughly research something. Try it!

  • you are correct, dorothy was made about it too. I read her biography(both versions).

  • Why did they not use Dorothy and Harry's voices? I got my suspicions but would love to know whats been written in the biography

  • The producer wanted operatic range for the leads — something neither Dorothy Dandridge nor Harry Belafonte has. Other actors, such as Pearl Bailey, sang their own parts. Supporting actors who also sing, such as Diahann Carroll, were also dubbed.

  • marilyn horne

  • this song is from Carmen the opera. they've changed the lyrics, which i think makes it even worse now that it isn't opera. the opera version is incredible.

  • Duh! This is from Otto Premenger's (sp?) Carmen Jones in 1954. It is an American classic in its own right. Its not supposed to be simply an English version of Bizet's Carmen. It's a unique reworking of the story utilizing black Americans within a part of black American and general American culture of the 50's. You should check it out with that in mind.

This version made me appreciate the original that much more because of the context it was put in [or in which it was put].

  • why do people keep bringing up marilyn horne? Everybody knows this already. it's like they say it to take something away from Dorothy Dandridge. I doubt marilyn could have made that song as sexy or powerful on the screen, whether she sang it or not.

  • I think they are mentioning Marilyn Horne 1.) because you don't see her. 2.) Her vocal performance and artistry help bring this movie to life, and they are as impressive as the acting going on in the scene. 3.) She has fans, just like Dorothy that are proud of this work, too.

  • I think that Dorothy & Marilyn is one of the GREAT collaborations in musical film and it should be talkeda bout more. You can't really dissect Dorothy's performance in Carmen Jones without talking about the way she and Marilyn Horne essentially became one person, particularly in this scene. Phenomenal work from both.

  • Saleema1: Dorothy Dandridge and Herry Belafonte, though singers, did not have operatic voices. Marilyn Horne, who went on to become one of the US's greatest opera stars, was 19 when she did the singing for this film.

  • And of course the voice is that of Marilyn Horne.

  • huh?

  • I want that hair.

  • Pinches americanos pendejos, todo estropean, se escucha horrible esa ópera en inglés...

    :0(

  • if you don't like the english version of the song then don't listen. escribo en espanol para su, pendejo/idioso. Carmen la cantana de opera en ingles o espanol es mucho hermoso. digo yo, Dorothy dandridge es muy guapa y la cinema is bien. con amor

  • ha, i saw the black opera singer singing it on sesame street when i was a kid. long live old school seventies street for gen x, 1970s-80s r.i.p. lol

  • Same here, same here.l I have falling in love with this song over and over again as others do their own version.

  • I have searched and searched for this song. Lucky me, I found it. I like the movie as well.

A version of this song is played in so many movies, shows etc. Heck including Sesame Street. When I hear it I sing it for DAYS!!!

  • She commands the screen.

  • I finally got to watch this movie - a bit cheesy but great performances from Dorothy Dandridge. This particular is a milestone performance. Miss Dandridge was definetly one of a kind. I appreciate her beauty, monstrous talent and charismatic spirit.

  • i wish i coulda met her....r.i.p dorothy

  • shes true beauty

  • Favorite song from "Carmen"!

  • brilliant so glad to find it!!

  • Yeah, that's why I said, "performed" by dorothy dandridge.

  • The chasis may be Dandridge, but the voice is over-dubbed by the young Marilyn Horne!!

  • ok excuse me im a little slow lol what do you mean chasis , to me it sounds like hear , could break down to me exactly what parts she is not singing.
