They had a pretty huge amount for sale, so there ARE people eating them.
I saved my 4 RES when they were hatchlings in chinatown NY, but hey were not in a fishmarket, just in a bootleg rolex store sold for pets. Now i'm hooked on turtles just bought a second 75 gallon tank for 3 musk turtles i got online....I have a one bedroom apt :(
When i buy a house, it's gonna be a turtle exhibit!!Gonna have to charge my guests to pay electric bills lol
Wild Captured DBT's shoudln't be sold as pets or as food. They should be left in the wild. Selling adult wild terps as pets is pretty cruel too.
There are people breeding DBT's in captivity and if you would like a pet one, a captive bred baby would be the way to go as it wouldn't impact the wild population of these turtles.
These stressed, sick and weakened wild turtles will die if not given expert care. To thrive they will require a large outdoor enclosure with brackish water to thrive.
Iam an experienced turtle keeper but know nothing of these turtles and IAm looking into them either that or a snapping turtle... Iam getting a 100gallon tank in a few weeks.
If you were buying babies, they were likely captive bred animals, and because of that are more expensive.
Believe me, you would not save any money purcahsing these. The cost of proper care for a stressed, sick wild turtle is extremely expensive, and even with the best of care some still die. These are wild caught, and very hard to keep as captives. If they do survive most refuse to eat a pellet diet and for life need to be fed fresh shrimp, squid, and smelt, and to be kept in salt water.
Thank you, I was going to try to find one at an Asian Market. but it is so sad they just have them like that you know. I got my first turtle becuase I felt bad for him. He was at the beach in a 10 gallon tank with like over 50 more turtles . I am no animal lover, but for some reason seeing turtle like that hurts me . There should be something to do to stop this,, i mean if you take them when they can't lay eggs then there want me any more, know I am stating the obvious, but still .
As stated in the info, I purchased the animals to keep, not consume, and I explained that the trade in these wild captures animals is not sustainable and that they need to be protected from this sort of commercialized exploitation.
fucking bloody bastards, they all should be imprisoned
