  • This piece reminds me of Disney's "Fantasia" - odd, but hey :) Aside from the main theme in Star Trek: TMP, this is my favourite cue in the film.

  • I actually like this "A" thing a lot over the regular G->C->E standard theme thing... Gotta love the 7th chord sound it creates...

  • Woah..... At 4:59 ....incorrect note. The Violins played an "A" instead of a "C." Something went wrong during the copyist session. ...Anyone? lol

  • Sound okay.

  • Ohh Sure, Utopian future, problem is, Man, on his own may only be able to make a facade of utopia, because man, present and in the future is imperfect.

This song is NOT the title song, this is the sequence song of the first time that Admiral Kirk sees and inspects the re-fit enterprise.

  • Bring back Science Fiction....

Star Trek 2009 was an action movie. Period.

I miss the old Star Trek....the one that occasionally made you think and wonder.

  • Excellent, James horner's TWOK theme, especially the drydock bits and Cliff eidelmans Undiscovered theme with this makes star trek complete to me.

  • The 9 must be fans of Klingon opera.

  • 9 people are ferengi :)

  • :-)

  • Gene Roddenberry got his money’s worth when he hired Jerry Goldsmith to score Star Trek TMP =)

  • Wonderful music - all of it - original or otherwise :)

  • I don't know much about 'nuance' or 'brass pieces' - but I do know a bloody good bit of music when I hear it!! This is just one of the most lovely and coolest bits of music ever commited to film, and in general for that matter!!

  • Lacks the crispness of Jerry Goldsmith's original, but does take the piece in a slightly more self-indulgent direction, as it isn't having to be slavish the the visuals as the original was.

  • Everytime I listen to this song and see the Enterprise I want to cry... it's like seeing a wonderful future that we will never live enough to see it become a reality!!! maybe our future generations... but, the way humankind are behaving so terribly...I really doubt it...it's sooooo sad... :*******(

  • @liketheuniverse11 I dislike Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. I'm glad that Spock was reincarnated, but the Enterprise was so beautiful. She met her "death" in that movie...I MISS HER!!! :'( R.I.P. USS Enterprise NCC-1701. At least she went out with Klingons on board.

  • @liketheuniverse11 That wonderful future you want so desperately to happen is in your hands. It's everyone's responsibility to leave a legacy that can be viewed with pride, and to ensure that the future generation has the power to chase their dreams. Never lose hope in humanity, because for every 10 people who make you lose faith, there's 1 out there who will give it back to you.

  • The Motion Picture had an outstanding score, but the plot was way too dry and half the movie was external views of the ship and special effects :/ it was a pretty mediocre movie but the music is great

  • This is still out of all the starships on the shows and movies is the best looking.I love the refit Constitution class the best

  • "They gave Her back to me, Scotty." "Gave Her back sir? Doubt it was THAT hard."

  • I didn't realize that "Mercury, the Winged Messenger" from Holst's The Planets, was the theme.

  • this is the best music in the histoy of star trek and will be rememberd for all time. this was the foundation for all the star trek music

  • "Pod secure. Pressure equalized."

  • I started playing Star Trek Online recently. (Found this video while looking for info for the video game.) Anyway, the game has mostly original music... which is good, but just not the same. I have a new appreciation for how much certain music makes Star Trek feel like Star Trek.

  • i have been look ing through all these shittty redos and remakes to find this, it took me a week, and finally, thank god

  • im tired of all these shitty redos and remakes, LEAVE THE ORIGINALS ALONE!!!!

  • I love this ship the most beautiful at all!!!

  • And *this* was the *real* Enterprise, in all its glorious ST:TMP detail. Not all blemished and crippled as in ST:TWoK. Not blemished, decommissioned, stolen and destroyed, as in ST:TSfS. And not an impostor, refurbished Potemkin, painted white, and with drastically diminished detail, as in the later movies. This *is* the starship I fell in love with as a lad. Newer CGI renditions of the original Constitution class are also wonderful,

  • @sbergman27 the NCC-1701-A was supposed to be the USS Ti'ho.

    Pedantic capybara is pedantic.

    But, agree'd.

  • @CapyGuy : According to Mr.Scott's Guide to the Enterprise, it was. However, Gene Roddenberry stated that it was a refurbished Yorktown (which I mistakenly "remembered" as Potemkin.) It's all on Ti'ho and Enterprise-A pages at Memory Alpha.

  • @CapyGuy : And by the way, when you think about it, isn't it cool that today we *really do* have a Memory Alpha! Back in the 70's, I'd never have imagined!

  • Beautiful!

  • Personally i hate CGI...it looks fake to me. I like the 70's/80's effects. Makin' a toy look so damn real. If u don't agree. It's fine w/ me.

  • i thought this was a movie not some strange song

  • @QR2458

"Dauuurrr me thought dis was video not song...."

  • This is one of the finest pieces ever written by Goldsmith and the embodiment of the reverence with which Star Trek attempts to depict a Utopian future.

From a musical standpoint, I much prefer the original soundtrack recording as Alfred Newman did a wonderful job in extracting every nuance of the score. This version sounds a bit "muddy" during the louder brass pieces. Goldsmith, God bless him, was a master composer but Newman was always the better conductor.

  • @tripsadelica I must agree that this is muddier ... I think why I like this piece over the original is because of the sustained brass note at 3:25, the first part of the main theme that leads to the next part. In the original, the two parts seem more separate.

  • @Superare1

Yes...that sustained note does do a good job, I agree. I suppose I am being a bit harsh judging this track. Studio scoring uses microphones simple everywhere to pick up every single note. If this was a concert recording, some of the quieter bits would have been drowned-out by the brass and not picked up by the mikes.

  • @tripsadelica

Ah the "old" movie.... awesome... Damn them for ever remaking any part of this

  • @tripsadelica

that's Lionel, not Alfred (he'd died 9 years before)

  • @wingrhames ...Oops! Yes...Lionel...not Alfred. You are quite right!

  • @tripsadelica Hm.....Alfred Newman.....isn't that the "What Me Worry?" guy from MAD Magazine??

  • @KiCreativeStudio

Just google Alfred Newman's name, mate. He and his brother were the mainstays in Fox's music department in the 40s onwards.

  • @KiCreativeStudio No, Alfred was the guy who composed the Fox fanfare.

  • @FishfilmInc Yes, yes, I stand corrected.

  • @tripsadelica It sounds muddy because its in 240p.

  • @FishfilmInc ...No...I wasn't refering to the clarity of the music uploaded here...just the tempo and timing of the brass section of this piece. As I wrote previously, Goldsmith was a genius as a composer but his conducting could vary at times. Newman conducted the soundtrack recording in Hollywood with the finest session musicians and produced an awe-inspiring piece of work. Newman was a brilliant arranger, conductor and composer in his own right.

  • does anybody know a way to find the music from the star trek 70's animated show? it was used in several of filmations cartoons afterwards but would be great to hear just by itself.

  • @alshakur1 The intro is on Youtube, but they all seem to have the voiceover, are you looking for the intro without the voiceover? Actually, I've been looking for the cues for the animated Star Trek for a while, but I don't think they were ever released or even made available to download.

  • @Superare1 The 70's Star Trek cartoon's music is avalible without voiceover on YouTube.

  • sorry guys, but i hated the new film, i appreciate the visuals etc but i couldnt compare it to the original star trek; i also felt they could have maybe let Shatner do the voice-over at the end speech instead of Spock, at least to give him some respect as Kirk. :)

  • I thought they should have had Shatner play Daddy Kirk on the Kelvin.

  • Screw Shatner, Nimoy is the shit.

  • Jerry was a GENIUS to the Star Trek saga. James Horner..??- Cannot recall his tragic attempts.

  • The criticism Horner receives these days is deserved but his Star Trek II score is a genuine classic.

  • James Horner's ST: II was top notch. But all the same, I wish every director of every movie after TMP tapped Mr. Goldsmith.

  • Jerry Goldsmith was a genius, no doubt. However I would hardly call Horners Star Trek score tragic His composition perfectly embodies the adventurous theme of The Wrath of Kahn. Every time I hear his music for that movie, I feel young.

  • @LancasterWannaBe It is a matter of taste, of course. The dragging, ponderous theme that Horner wrote for the the movie never struck me as a wonder.

  • Where can I download this version of the Enterprise theme?

  • @StoRmF5 Amazon mp3 digital downloads.

  • And just think. The real main theme of this movie lived on through TNG.

  • Added: And I listened to this whole thing just to hear 3:19 - 4:25.

  • The Starship Enterprise should be THE goal that all of mankind works towards.

  • @punkwasher I would prefer to build a starship where all the consoles don't explode all the time.

  • @punkwasher AMEN! BESIDES KILLING EACH OTHER OFF! WORKING ON FINDING NEW WORLDS IN SPACE THAT WOULD BE GREAT!

  • @punkwasher

Yes! So true! If today's superficial generation could just be made to understand that!

  • This song played through my head when I was reunited with my girlfriend at my new high school when I thought I'd never see her again. Sadly, she passed away a couple of years later.

  • The model in TOS wasn't little, nor was it hung on strings. You can see it in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. It's quite large...

  • @alhartman66: yep, it's about 11 feet long. There was a three-footer made as well, but it didn't see any airtime, if I recall.

    I love this piece, too.

  • Whenever life gets me down, I can listen to this music and dream.

  • That's why Star Trek was invented!

  • WOW!...Almost THIRTY YEARS (???!!!) of listening to the original 1979 soundtrack, I FINALLY heard this version! INCREDIBLE! This scene was my FAVORITE one in ST:TMP 'cos it showed the ship that Kirk loved and brought back safely from it's 5 year mission being reborn! It's the ONLY time the Enterprise was given a time to shine! In alot of the sequels and the new HD TV version, it looks more like it's supposed to zip around like an X-wing fighter! This is THE QUINTESSENTIAL STARSHIP!

  • Comment removed

  • The Enterprise is my favorite starshp in Star Trek.

  • Was gutted when I heard this iconic theme wouldn't be in the new movie. :( I surely hope they consider it in the possible sequel.

  • Its present only at the end, to symbolize the 'coming together' of the Enterprise crew (TOS theme). The movie as a whole is intended to cover the period just before TOS era (in an alternate timeline)..

I do agree though that it was missed, and I would have liked it to be more present. The soundtrack is pretty good though, imo

  • I so wanted the new trek film to have a nod to this lovely scene and this score, but they rushed it to placate the pocorn-throwers.

  • Wish this was in the new film. I didn't like the new Enterprise, it just seemed so thin.

  • Its so ugly compared to the little model hanging from strings in TOS. And I mean that sincerely.

Regardless of the "recreation" status on JJ's Star Trek, he had no right to rape everything about the series.

  • amen, brotha...or sista.

  • I saw the first Star Trek movie recently and I searched for this music because the scene where they first arrive at the Enterprise really impressed me. It made me see Star Trek in a whole new light. It was stunning how much time they took in the film to just fly up to the Enterprise. The long musical score really took it's sweet time and went into many different variations. Movies these days won't ever do that because nobody appreciates the beauty of simply things. Is the scene on Youtube?

  • Exactly - this was by far the most "cinematic" of all of the Star Trek movies. The reason for the long flyaround of the Enterprise was that Bob Wise wanted the audience to see how huge the Enterprise was (in comparison to the travel pod) so when the Enterprise is next to Vger we can see how massive it's scale is.

  • hey you said in the description you had the mp3 download? could you message me back? if you could that would be awesome! this song is so beautiful!

  • If anyone wants to hear the alternate version of "Leaving Drydock" (that goes along with JimJWare's Alternate "The Enterprise), just click on "More From:..." and it's the first video.

  • Man I miss Goldsmith...

  • Brilliant composition, it's such a shame this wasn't used in the new film.

  • Thanks for posting this. Yes, it is better than the movie version. This is as good as Korngold's pieces for film and performance. Who was the conductor?

  • NP... I emailed the RSNO and they said that Goldsmith himself showed up in 1979 and conducted it with the original score! Maybe a few months after the movie came out, he wanted to try something different?

  • One of the most evocative and moving pieces of music ever written for film...truly awe-inspiring, brilliant and reverential.

  • I like to stand at attention while this plays, and salute while pretending that the Enterprise is drifting by.

  • i really love this song...

jerry goldsmith was a great composer.

  • I like the solo horn better -the one with the clarinet or oboe playing the part of the solo french horn is good too!.... But still this is very beautiful, glorious, romantic and very much like the original soundtrack score of Enterprise from Star Trek- The motion picture! Great job to the Royal Scottish National orchestra for doing a fantastic performance and especially to Superare1! Now I want to hear, next from that same orchestra, "Leaving Drydock!!!"

  • Star Trek I had the best music of any Star Trek movie. I wonder what the music in the new movie will be like.

And don't reply to this just to find a way to bash the new movie 4 months before it comes out.

  • Well, I saw the film today. The music was not as romantic or idealistic. I'd have to see the film again to get a greater understanding of it.

  • I love to listen music...

  • this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written or recorded. i have to say it brings tears to my eyes every time.

  • Mr spark

  • SPOCK!

  • awesome earthsot background

  • Now i cannot wait to see the new Star Trek movie.

  • heh now wait for the J.J. Abram's refited enterprise:D...

  • I can...the trailer looks horrible.

  • I love the music, but damn, that picture of the Enterprise is SOOOOOO beautiful.

She is truly The Lady of Starfleet.

  • If I ever became a Starfleet Admiral, no matter what era, (If post TMP), I'd have a TMP Connie for my "Flagship" (Refitted to the gills for extra oomph)

  • Add that to an untried captain.

2 and a half years as chief of starfleet operations may have made me a little stale but i wouldn't exactley consider myself... untried

  • They gave Her back to me, Scotty.

Gave her back, sir? I doubt it was that easy with Nogura.

    Yer Right

Well, Any man who can manage such a feat, I wouldna dare disappoint. She'll launch on time Jim, and she'll be ready....

  • Nicely done!!!!

  • Thank you so much for this!

3:20 is when it really gets epic for me.

  • Some of the most beautiful music you'll find anywhere is in Star Trek :).

  • This is one of, if not, THE Best piece of music ever written for any Star Trek show or movie. The buildup to the part where we finally see the Enterprise head-on, that was absolutely brilliant.

Jerry Goldsmith was an absolute genius! He is missed.

  • 6:06

    Thank you, Mr. Scott.

    Aye, sir.

  • Thanks dafmurray. I wondered why it didn't sound "right".

  • Superare1, thanks for posting this. Isn't it from the 'Frontiers' album. The original had a complicated mix of orchaestra and electronics and Goldsmith preferred to sit with the engineer during the performance instead of conducting, which Lionel Newman did. The original is so burned into my memory that it's hard to initially judge this version.

  • Thanks for the info, I hadn't heard of the Frontiers album before.
