For those looking for a portable version of the famous bucket Dave uses, you might be interested in the Sea To Summit "Kitchen Sink." It's basically a nylon, foldable, waterproof, and self standing bucket that comes in 5-20L capacities. I love mine.
I love everything made by Eastwing & always have, but my new favorite hatchet is the KOBALT hickory handled hatchet I just picked up from Lowes. Little early to comment on durability, but so far its killer. Drop forged high carbon steel head comes sharper than any axe I ever bought. Lifetime warranty. You break it, they give you another one to see if you can do it again. Bought the Michigan axe too. Nice.. Hope you will consider these in your upcoming axe reviews. (love me some Lowe's)
Dave, I've come to "Journals of the Yurt" a little late but started watching them from the beginning. I learned of you through "Dual Survival", which I enjoyed immensely. While a great show, I think I'm enjoying your Youtube videos even more. Thank you for sharing your ideas, skills, product reviews, etc.
Hey Mr. Canterbury. Great videos! Loving the Journal of the Yurt and 21st century longhunter series! I've seen these belt axes around in several places. What are your feelings on something like a Cold Steel Trail Hawk? For about the same price you get a carbon steel tomahawk, with a hammer, and the ability to make a new handle should you break it (as you've mentioned in your axe videos). Much smaller cutting face i know, but would see that as a resonable option as well?
Yes it is Estwing and yes it does come with the leather sheath. Also what i like about this axe is that if u wont to put a wooden stake into the ground with the revers side, it does it with ease
Dave, whats your take on say a Ka-Bar Becker BK9 vs. a hatchet like this Estwing? i used to carry a pack axe exclusively, but now that i've found how well a big knife chops and batons thru wood, it just seems to be the logical choice...
As a Hoosier I too can say I have had many Estwings, we too call them Eastwings it's just the country in us. Wish I could of met up with ya in Indy, my office is downtown 2 blocks west of Lucas Oil Stadium. Great video and I know for a fact that the Estwing is a great little hatchet. Peace. By the way, I live in Owen County.
I have a hatchet made by Fiskars that was made in Sweden that really has done a great job for me in my purposes and it holds an edge really well. You should check that out for your or R&D. It is also lightweight as opposed to the Eastwing that you have here.
I went out and picked up the full size today... right from the store it split logs for the garage stove perfectly! I brought it in the house and with my small file and diamond rod I was shaving my arm in no time... removed the stickers, oiled everything including the sheath with 3 in 1 oil and packed it for the next hike... now what to do if I get the wetterlings for christmas?
dave i have used the same estwing camp axe for 10 years of hard use it is still going strong with no issues. 5 years ago i purchased a full size axe with the same construction. It is a little heavy but Im convinced it is indestructible! Peace be with you.
Amazon Prime members get 2 day free shipping too. $80 bucks a year to be a Prime member and you can stream free movies and TV shows they have, worth it to me!
Dave, Id like to hear the stories behind the tattoos. Bahco axes are great to for "common man" products. i prefer wood handles for the anti-vibration qualities. Estwing hammers/axes will really wear you down fast due to the shock you recieve with each strike. ( 20 years as a carpenter teaches you a few things about that!) also another option would be a rigging axe. Plumb Rigsters are the best IMO, but a Vaughn Rig Builder Hatchet does the trick to. just options
I have one of those that my grandfather gave me when I was in Boy Scouts back in the early sixties. It was pretty old then. I still have it and it's my primary butchering tool for deer. It means a lot to me. I bought a new one recently for a spare (one is none, two is one) and they are exactly the se as the old one.
i absolutely love ur vids i'm a 57 yr old lady in nova scotia. as a stroke survivor i still get out in the woods often either walking or snowshoeing. i was told i would never walk again but god blessed me with ability. i love roughin it therefore i love ur yurt and vids. tryin to talk my husband into spending christmas in the bush this year....what was my dad's 1 room hunt/fish camp. i think it b wonderful. keep makin the vids they teach me al;ot. i cant get enough of this stuff ty karen

Dave, I have that very same hatchet. I have used it faithfully for two years, and it holds a mean little edge. I have used it in many of my videos. Thanks for sharing, Brother.
I own one of the Estwing camp hatchets, so does my brother. We also have a guy we camp with who has a 50+ year old one which is still kicking, you can't break them.
Dave, I still have my Estwing ax I used as a Cub Scout in the late 50's. That's right...50's ! It's still a good ax. Just keep the leather handle grip oiled ( I use mink oil ) and it looks like it will be around long after I'm gone. By the way.... I wonder how many guys named Harvey still watch your videos ?
I'm a tradesman, very experienced with Estwing hammers. I highly recommend that if people are thinking of getting one of these axes, they get the version with the blue nylon/vinyl grip. The leather handles fall apart with hard usage, the blue nylon is a better grip and the hammer I have is still going strong after 25 years of hard use.
I use this same camp axe on my trapline and have only positive things to report. They work great to cut trap beds in logs and in ice. They are well balanced for driving stakes and you do not have to worry about cracking the handle due to an all metal construction. Thanks for your input dave.

hay Dave luving the yurt journals.. looking forward to see how that axe plays out. hope to get over next year to the gathering. all the best from me in the UK..
dave i have a ax that only cost me $8.00 at a place called harbor freight it a realiy good ax i us it to split wood all the time ........love the vid hope this can help
I am from Germany and as far as my experience goes I can tell they are worth the money. They are not cheap, but good stuff has its price. Unfortunately I can't recall many brands right now, but you should look in to the knives from Eickhorn Solingen and Pohl Force. They use good steel and the knives are high quality, very heavy duty.
Hi there. I was wondering if you could let me know which Bahco file you used in this video? I'd like to try and find one here in the UK. Great vids! Thanks.
Speaking of survival knives, wonder if you have checked out or had an opinion on the Schrade SCHF3N Extreme Survival Fixed Blade Knife. I bought one and liked it so much bought 2 more. They are around 43 bucks currently. 12 inch overall,. 6 3/8" full tang, micarta handles and a decent sheath with pouch for a stone and firesteel. I have bought a lot of knives and this is my favorite. (and very reasonably priced as well).
being a business guy I am always trying to think up catchy phrases for things.
These aren't great, but its early.
That squirrel was Yurt'in for certain.
You only yurt, the guns you love. (sung to you only hurt, the ones you love)
Dave and Harvey's excellent Yurt venture.
Let me axe you somethin, if there are bears in the area, what is the contingency plan? usually it is being able to outrun your partner, but going solo, I guess the shotgun serves bear duty?
Hey Dave, I don't think you'll be disappointed with that hatchet, I've carried a Estwing 26" chopping axe on the side of my pack for near a decade now, and never had a problem. Solid 1 piece construction forged in USA. I couldn't find the specs on the steel used but i think its a carbon tool steel possibly W2. They make really great hand tools in general. Good pick for the common man brother. Looking forward to seeing your version of the camp axe!
Good old Eastwing! Got a good scar on my thumb to remember mine by ;-) I remember the birthday and birthday party when my Dad gave it to me. My Dad used his in his sideline business chopping pine logs into tobacco tag sticks and could handle one as well as a artist with his brush. The scar was a result of him teaching me how to wield mine as he did his. Skill can be a hard lesson learned. Wish I had it still, but I do have one of the Barlow knives and his old whet rock! Great memories.
I have used that same #1 hatchet for over 15 years and I have beat the heck ouf of it. It is a bit heavier than the wooden handle axes but it will not let you down. I think home depot stocks them in their hammer/tool section.
Brought a smile to my face seeing you heft that Estwing Dave. Had nothing but good luck with it once I sharpened it to my liking. Many fires built with that lil guy. That being said, Im upgrading to a wetterlings 19" hunter once I save enough :D Just way more efficient for cutting any real amount of firewood
I would like to see a review on an Trail Boss Old Timer Knife, 5 5/8" stainless steel clip point fixed blade, Green Safe-T-Grip handle, 10 3/8" overall. price $15.00. I have one and love it for a cheap knife.
Dave congratz, finally a cheap version of the hatchet that will be worth buying, can't wait till you produce this ax..........I love hatchets and hawks want to see what you come up with.
Dave, I had just sent you a message on here about axes! Thanks for answering it through a video, whether you meant to or not!!!!! Thanks a ton brother!
The problem I see with the estwing axe is it looks like it would be hard to choke up on it for fine work. Not a big deal if you've got a knife though. Just a thought.
@jnsX2 Okay, so I broke down and got one, been looking at 'em for years and Dave talked me into it. Free with the gift card from work. :-) It's actually not too bad to choke up on, so I'll take back that comment. Not the best, but no where near as bad as I thought it would be. Been playing with it for a few days and like it so far. Wonder how it'll hold up to Dave's testing...
Let me start by saying thanks fir all the informative videos. I have been caring that same Estwing axe in my back pack for years. It's a great axe to have around.
Abandoning a nomadic life style to travel. That's ironic. Maybe they could travel so you could stay put in your nomadic life style? ... Just sayin that cause it strikes me funny
I've had one of those hatchets. Just like that. They are ok, but you can get a better surplus Swedish one for $20 something. Not Swiss or even Wetterlings, but good
You can find the Condor Greenland hatchet that's high carbon steel, shaped in the Swiss hunting head style. Not up to the best Swiss, but pretty nice 4 $35
I just purchased a Wetterlings axe after your constant endorsement over the years and it is a very quality product. Things like that are worth in investment in my opinion because they last a lifetime. So far you haven't let me down Sir! I carry the original pathfinder knife, leatherman core, and the Wetterlings axe into the woods on all my outings and could not be happier with the quality of the tools you recommend. Thanks for all the hard work!
This yurt thing keeps drawing me in Dave. I don't know why but it's powerful. Okay, focus now...I still have my 6 dollar coleman camp axe from the late eighties. It looks like hell but is very common man and can still be had at your local PX/BX/NEX for the same price. 9-12 bucks at other discount dept stores. I just picked up a wood handle jobber because of your constant advice and now your romancing an all steel rig... I'm so confused but am loving your vids. Have a safe trip to your meeting.
for the last three years ive been using a Fiskars made, gerber sport axe.
I was sceptical at first, especially with the $25 price and fiberglass handle. I tell ya what though....ive beat the ever living crap out of that thing !!! constant batoning (when needed), hammering and used as a throwing axe. its forged 1.5lb 1095HC and stays razor sharp!! and easy to hoan and splits wood quite well. the handle is hollow....i keep extra tinder in it.
I use the gerber pack axe, holds an edge, tough, inexpensive, good quality. I am very impressed and it has done everything I asked of it. However it was made in Finland, but as long as it performs well.
Man these vids are making me want to live in the woods for awhile. Used to do it a lot but got pulled away by city life. Now im missin the sound of the creek bed and the bite of the frost. Love the vids and keep it up Dave!
Man, when I was a boyscout we didn't do anything. We met once a week and read one chapter of the book. Mostly sat around and watched a bunch of old fat dudes smoke cigarettes in an attic. I completed the book, did the assignments, and got all my medals in one ceremony and was out.
@sethzky77 This video just served as documentation to the IRS allowing them all to write off Christmas on their taxes. lol great plan to have a company meeting next weekend Dave!
I made up some tallow and have used it on some tools. Seems to work fine, but was wondering if the scent would attract animals. Thanks for the vids Dave.
Hey, Dave lets try out some cheap alternatives to thoughs high dollar knives as well. Maybe some old hickory knives. They are 1095 high carbon steel, hard wood handles, and 2 or 3 dollars at a flea market or yard sale. A brand new one is around $12 - $20 and guess what, they are Made In The "USA."
@snappydog357 Those Knives are not bad Green River as well but unless I had a good Ax I would not stake my life on one. They are a good common man knife may do a review brother.
@wildernessoutfitters Ontario SP-8 plus a Mora Bushcraft Force ... best common man value and utility ( In my VERY humble opinion ). Sure do like my Cold-Steel Voyager XL (Plain Clip-Point) too ... All these blades are under ~$60 (The XL is under $50 delivered and the Force is ~$30).
I buy the majority of my axes and hatchets at yard/garage sales or estate auctions. Most expensive one so far was 2 dollars. There are some awesome finds if you are will ing to do some rehab work with rust and rehang them with a handle. Many of my old axes needed new handles only because they leaned against the barn wall too long and have permanent bends.
hey brother actually they are coated with a laquer at the factory. they had an episode of "how its made" where they showed how they stamped them out and finished them
hey dave i have a Gerber survival knife. i got it after i finished basic 3/330th fort benning my mos was 11bravo and i put that tool through alot.would you go with any new Gerber knifes that are on the market?
I've seen how they make that hatchet on the show "How it's Made." It's a pretty awesome process... Can't be 100% sure, but it looks like that same, and sounds the same from your description.
@WildManNatureBound I agree... I did a review on this exact hatchet on my channel and it doesn't work very well for splitting but it works great for cutting. Holds and edge very well and I treated mine with hot oil bluing and holds up even better. You can see how I did it under my Creative Projects Playlist.
I have a Fiskars axe its made in Finland I have had it now 1 year and it will hold up to any thing I can put it trough and thats a lot lol it was $30 I love it
Harvey did inspired my choice in gear as I happen to be putting it together. No it does not have a name. Howabout Wilson? How fortuitous that this experiment is prior to my own bamboo hut venture. The original hatchet was darn good. Where it might suffer in comparison to other good designs, it excels in reliability and safety as a result of it's one piece construction and ability split kindling with it's handle making it's overall price-performance rating is high enough to be a classic .
Thank you for doing a review on the Estwing Hatchet... trust me you won't be let down. The Estwing was my first hatchet and will be my last. Definitely a great multi-tool, plus it's made here in the good ol' USA (Rockford,IL). Good luck in the yurt, and remember country folk can survive!
If you have to buy Chinese, buy from American resellers like Harbor Freight. Harbor Freight's corporate offices are in my home town so I don't mind supporting them even though they sell Chinese made goods.
Got my SA Wetterlings Hunter 2 days ago. I am in LOVE with that axe. Good lord that thing will cut. Gave it the tallow treatment. :) It will last me the rest of my life.
@wildernessoutfitters Of course, I too had a Estwing many moons ago. Lasted me several years till I broke the handle and did not know how to fix it. (Handle is the weakest point in my view.)
Got two cheap China made drop forged plastic handled hatchets ($7 from harbor freight) that I used until I got the Wetterlings. Like going from the outhouse to the white house.
i'm glad you have an objective and open-minded view on chinese-made goods, its common for people to say all chinese things are crap. it's not china's fault, companies want to sell things cheap (many of these companies are american), in order to meet the price point these companies want, certain things need to be compromised. china is fully capable of making very high quality goods. and like you said, dave, quality chinese-made products are available, it's just a matter of finding them.
@DudeNumberOnePlus I am not in a corner brother I have a Cot behind me and an end table this may give the illusion of a corner because the cot is straight?
I do not think that Estwing publishes information on their tool steel. I have the ax and I use it exclusively to cut wood for my wood stove at my New Mexico cabin. It works very well and I have been very satisfied with it.
Its funny that you weren't a boy scout, I wasn't either I did it for like a month got tired of arts and crafts, Told my grandfather what it was like and that was the end of that from then on it was bush craft and survival lessons out on a cattle ranch with grandpa...... priceless knowledge that I've never seen any boy scout know.
by the way I lol every time I hear you call your bucket harvey, Its kind of like wilson from castaway
Just got a estwing hatchet from sear's today.
You should also check out council tool it's also american made I was thinking about getting there

1) There are a lot more things like that hard tack that you can make Dave: Bannock (Like Sean), Libe which is basically the same thing you’ve made (some put cheese or meat inside it first!) and some cook it straight on coals (also covered) and then scrape off the ash. What do you think about knives made in Germany? Did you ever had one? I just wanna know.Keep it up Dave!
gamerwoot 2 months ago in playlist Journals of the Yurt 7
@gamerwoot
Hi,
I am from Germany and as far as my experience goes I can tell they are worth the money. They are not cheap, but good stuff has its price. Unfortunately I can't recall many brands right now, but you should look in to the knives from Eickhorn Solingen and Pohl Force. They use good steel and the knives are high quality, very heavy duty.

These aren't great, but its early.
That squirrel was Yurt'in for certain.
You only yurt, the guns you love. (sung to you only hurt, the ones you love)
Dave and Harvey's excellent Yurt venture.
Let me axe you somethin, if there are bears in the area, what is the contingency plan? usually it is being able to outrun your partner, but going solo, I guess the shotgun serves bear duty?

mogges1 2 months ago

The problem I see with the estwing axe is it looks like it would be hard to choke up on it for fine work. Not a big deal if you've got a knife though. Just a thought.
jnsX2 2 months ago
@jnsX2 Okay, so I broke down and got one, been looking at 'em for years and Dave talked me into it. Free with the gift card from work. :-) It's actually not too bad to choke up on, so I'll take back that comment. Not the best, but no where near as bad as I thought it would be. Been playing with it for a few days and like it so far. Wonder how it'll hold up to Dave's testing...

I tell ya what though....ive beat the ever living crap out of that thing !!! constant batoning (when needed), hammering and used as a throwing axe. its forged 1.5lb 1095HC and stays razor sharp!! and easy to hoan and splits wood quite well. the handle is hollow....i keep extra tinder in it.
seems to be a good common man item.

If you have to buy Chinese, buy from American resellers like Harbor Freight. Harbor Freight's corporate offices are in my home town so I don't mind supporting them even though they sell Chinese made goods.

wildernessoutfitters 2 months ago
@wildernessoutfitters Of course, I too had a Estwing many moons ago. Lasted me several years till I broke the handle and did not know how to fix it. (Handle is the weakest point in my view.)
Got two cheap China made drop forged plastic handled hatchets ($7 from harbor freight) that I used until I got the Wetterlings. Like going from the outhouse to the white house.
TheGrayman1234 2 months ago
Estwing makes great stuff. I use their hammers in my tool box, rock hammer and hatchet in the field as well.
TheGreenerGardener 2 months ago
i'm glad you have an objective and open-minded view on chinese-made goods, its common for people to say all chinese things are crap. it's not china's fault, companies want to sell things cheap (many of these companies are american), in order to meet the price point these companies want, certain things need to be compromised. china is fully capable of making very high quality goods. and like you said, dave, quality chinese-made products are available, it's just a matter of finding them.
