However, after the Mets enjoyed success, injuries to Wright, Reyes, Delgado, Santana, Beltran, Davis, Putz, and even K-Rod or Bay in recent years have stifled their efforts.

So I guess if the Mets had managed to win a title with any of those guys then they would have bought a title as well. Yankees are playing within the rules. Nothing prevents them from signing whoever agrees to sign with them. Same as any other team. It's not the Yankees' fault that the Mets are a fiscal mess.
