Check out, 6| Paper Lace - Billy Don't Be A Hero (Christmas TOTP '74) , great live. Paper Lace brought it out in March, 1974 in England planned to release it in the America but Bo Donaldson covered it in June 74 so Paper Lace didn't bother google it
i'm over 50 and still loooove this song,. has some very dear memories attatches to. the single 45 flip side "Don't Ever Look Back" has also got dear memories.
It just sounds like a mistake because the Paper Lace drummer and the orchestral drummer are doing two different things. Why the hell would they even allow the orch. drummer to play?

I love this song but I think the young woman in the song is crazy because she was mad he died as a hero and died to save his friends He is a real hero in my opinion and she is a selfish person I would be proud of my girl friend if she died a hero and she would be proud of me we would both cherish that letter
I luv this song its really beautifulz n i looked it up n i think it said dat its bout da civil war in america but im not sure does ny1 no wat war its bout?
I love the orchestra playoff at the end. And the female "stagehands" who come out just to move the mics back. There's nothing like this today. And it's all LIVE not lipsynced. Too cool.
When I WAS 16 THIS GROUP HIT OUR TOWN. ITHINK THE ONLY NON UGLY MEMBER TRIED TO CHAT ME UP, FORTUNATELY I HAD MY OLDER SISTER WITH ME SO IT WAS NO GO. STILL HAPPY MEMORIES.
This is the second record I was ever given...it still makes me cry and funnily enough most people I know from whatever background know and secretly love it...
this is a awesome song! fav song EVA. sad though for his babe. sigh ... stop wars man! ypu create hundreds, thousands and millions broken hearted people! do u realize ppl go into depression?! pls, i beg of you terrorists/ weird ppl who cause fights, DO NOT BE SO CRUEL! love, your shyt ^^.

Could be the worst song ever made.
Just dreadful trash.
Idiots actually payed to hear this crap??
I hated it back in the 70s and it still makes my skin crawl.

Lmao they always play this song at my work , and now i know it off by heart.

Paper Lace's version of this song goes "As Billy started to go, she said, "keep your pretty head low-ow-ow."
In Bo Donaldson's version, it's "As she started to go, she said, "Billy keep your head low."
Check the words in the video. You may want to correct your lyrics.

Maybe Phil Wright needed some help. Singing and playing the drums is hard. Maybe they should have had him just sing on this one.
But it's better than Paper Lace's studio version!

The Officer dress uniform is actually blue, but this is an American slang reference to our soldiers in general.

Bericus,
I agree!
The closest thing we have to this song today is "Viva La Vida by Coldplay. That song kind of reminds me of this great song of '74, for some reason.
angusthethird 3 years ago
I have to give this song to Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. A better version.
dickhertzalot 3 years ago 2
If the Paper Lace studio version sounded like that, it probably would have been a bigger hit stateside.
But on record, I like Bo Donaldson's version better.
A real tear jerker indeed.
