  • that is my uncle and i an 15 look for me on face book dut put billy not be an hero so i no who you are

  • that is my uncle and i an 15

  • why the orchestra,

  • I saw Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods with the Bay City Rollers at the Coliseum in the 70's. I gotta check my pulse now!

  • Could be the worst song ever made.

    Just dreadful trash.

Idiots actually payed to hear this crap??

I hated it back in the 70s and it still makes my skin crawl.

  • Ole Phil wright and the boys did a good job, brings back memories from an era that fashion forgot, The songs were good though!

  • thats what was cool about the 70s ,it was a fun era 4 music, from led zepplin to paper lace, lol

  • Check out, 6| Paper Lace - Billy Don't Be A Hero (Christmas TOTP '74) , great live. Paper Lace brought it out in March, 1974 in England planned to release it in the America but Bo Donaldson covered it in June 74 so Paper Lace didn't bother google it

  • The guitarist has the most beautiful voice.

  • @babygore0599 although I do think he might be a little high, :-)

  • i'm over 50 and still loooove this song,. has some very dear memories attatches to. the single 45 flip side "Don't Ever Look Back" has also got dear memories.

  • why figt over who did it better they both did it well and paper lace was the original that in itself says it was a good enough song to redo

  • im over 9000 and i love this song

  • Wow, apparently white people DO need to be exterminated

  • @dbmcg2000. WTF. Bo Donaldson is million times better than this.

  • Much better verson than the Bo Donaldson one!

  • Either way, it brings back memories of heading to Nam. and getting that LOVELY "Dear John" letter.

My ex was a peace-nik, and am I glad she dumped me.

  • OMG, I REMEMBER THIS SONG!

  • Nothing brings back the 70s like a bunch of hair mountains & bell-bottom prom tuxes.

  • Lmao they always play this song at my work , and now i know it off by heart.

  • Paper Lace's version of this song goes "As Billy started to go, she said, "keep your pretty head low-ow-ow."

In Bo Donaldson's version, it's "As she started to go, she said, "Billy keep your head low."

Check the words in the video. You may want to correct your lyrics.

  • This is awesome!

  • Maybe Phil Wright needed some help. Singing and playing the drums is hard. Maybe they should have had him just sing on this one.

But it's better than Paper Lace's studio version!

  • It just sounds like a mistake because the Paper Lace drummer and the orchestral drummer are doing two different things. Why the hell would they even allow the orch. drummer to play?

  • go join the army die and get your GF the letter then what are you on bout you dont love her if you would like a letter saying she died bravely

  • when you love someone, you can't stand a world without that person... So everyone can die except that one :)

  • This is Paper Lace covering(riping off) Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods

  • Considering Paper Lace did this first I would say things were the other way around!

  • so many memories - wonderful....and sad too!

  • I luv this song its really beautifulz n i looked it up n i think it said dat its bout da civil war in america but im not sure does ny1 no wat war its bout?

  • It was made during the height of the Viet Nam war.

  • I no it was made durin Vietnam war but no1 in the vietnam war wore blue uniforms as it says "soldier blues" arnt they american?

  • The Officer dress uniform is actually blue, but this is an American slang reference to our soldiers in general.

  • I love the orchestra playoff at the end. And the female "stagehands" who come out just to move the mics back. There's nothing like this today. And it's all LIVE not lipsynced. Too cool.

  • What a song!!!!!

  • i love this and im young lol

  • great song, takes me back to the

early 70s, when its was played on the radio

  • Vietnam was still in peoples mind

  • This is Bo Donaldson singing. Duh. This is Paper Lace. Duh

  • Bericus,

    I agree!

The closest thing we have to this song today is "Viva La Vida by Coldplay. That song kind of reminds me of this great song of '74, for some reason.

  • I have to give this song to Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. A better version.

  • If the Paper Lace studio version sounded like that, it probably would have been a bigger hit stateside.

But on record, I like Bo Donaldson's version better.

    A real tear jerker indeed.
