I have had cats all my life and some of them have been pretty chunky BUT I have had to keep their eating habits under control. This is animal cruelty. I know it's easy to say that I as I don't have the cat hanging around me all day begging for food but something should have been done. It's putting the cats health at risk. Lets face it, my cats are part of my family. I would not want to see them get any health related problems or be in pain due to the amount of food they are consuming.

I had a 'fat cat' as a 'guest' in a neighborhood I lived in. He was super social; He went in, big as he was, and asked my cat (a kitten at the time) for permission to eat her dry food, which she gave him eagerly. Then he scarfed it down. No coercion, she liked wet food. And frankly, I don't bash this owner, he's not forcing this cat. Most cats have genetics to be in super shape, but some don't have the regulator.  Forcing them to not overeat is a lifetime of pleading starvation...
