this cover is pointless; seriously the vocals are absolute shite bruce would probably agree ; played too fast the crunch of the original riff is lost; a good song done poorly by a great band,
No way. The guy really doesn't know the words so he just goes nyuh ni nuh nyoh nhayng....this is the worst cover of any song I've ever heard, and I'm half a century old. Some smoking guitar at the end, before the twit starts babbling about a rival band "in the rearview mirror" (translation: Metallica is way out front where we wish we could be)
Enter Sandman, exit these dorks.
So lame it hurts. This just makes the original by Montrose even that much better--didn't think that was possible.
It just shows how good Sammy Hagar really was when even the great Bruce Dickenson can't sing this number. I think Sammy didn't get the credit he was due, probably due to the mega bands that were about at the time (Led Zep etc). Having been a lead singer in a rock band I know how increadable your voice has to be to carry this track off.
Hahaha, so who in Metallica's the prick, the wanker, the cunt and the arsehole?
I'm guessing it's Lars who's the prick, James is the wanker, Kirk's probably the cunt, with the arsehole being Cliff/Jason/Rob -depending on when it was recorded-. :D
@rockingrugger Let me take a wild guess, I am thinking this version was recorded around 1992, when the Fear of the Dark album was released. I am guessing this by the way Bruce is singing, sounds a lot like the way he recorded Fear of the Dark. If this is true, Jason was in Metallica then.

@rockingrugger I'm pretty sure Kirk is the wanker because of his wah pedal. James might be the prick since he finished first which would best leave Lars as the cunt and Jason as the arsehole. If only Iron Maiden knew how little say Jason really had with what Metallica did.
It's getting faster lads! Hurry up! Here comes Metallica in the rear-view mirror! And it's also a (leads) by (electric)... (too fast to understand) At the finish it's prick... It's... And at the finish it's prick followed by the wanker, followed by cunt with arsehole finishing a close fourth.
@piperopiperos ... you do realize that Ronnie Montrose wrote the lyrics to this song ... released it in 1973 (I believe) with Sammy Hagar singing ... but it's pretty obvious that Bruce was influenced by that early 70's stuff ... and the very end is ad lib'd by Bruce ... just want Montrose and Hagar to get credit where it is deserved.
@bobmarleyisgod1 Never said they did....I'll re-phrase....Only Montrose and Judas Priest "could" do this song justice... ....Better? ....and don't get me wrong...I've seen Iron Maiden at least 7 or eight times......before 1982. I just think they could have hit this one harder. The original still has more balls.....in my opinion of course. It's all good in the end.
@BPL1980 I noticed, but Space Station No.5 (the original by Montrose) came out in 1973, so if you're implying that this riff was stolen from Stiff Little Fingers, you're wrong. Montrose came first.
I gotta say, this was disappointing. As somebody else mentioned, it would have been fantastic in the 80's, especially with Bruce's air raid siren singing (I really missed the opening scream from the original, and the hoarser singing really killed it for me), but unfortunately it was recorded in a major slump for Maiden. I would love to hear them have another go at it, as they've done a fairly decent job of getting it back together recently.
@Winonasalibi that's the point, In Maiden covers janick said, we listen to the song and just learn it by ear and give it a go and put our twist on it, and just have fun with it, we are not a cover band."
Some crazy shit, but he mentions Metallica because Metallica played a few bars of Run to the Hills on their cover version of Last Caress/Green Hell...This song would have been better if it wasn't recorded in the same sense Fear of the Dark was. I'm not bashing the album, but I'd rather listen to something on 'Beast or Powerslave. Just my opinion though.
Fear Of The Dark is actually an awesome album, considering that in a lot of cases it managed to recreate the darkness of the Iron Maiden/Killers era. But it would have come as a shock at the time, and probably a lot of people were put off by No Prayer For The Dying, an album so formulaic that i can hardly listen to it.
This is a great cover. With respect, Metallica take themselves far too seriously (So What excepted) and its good to see them lampooned once in a while.
@DieSchwartzmann I do agree with the fact that Metallica can be a little gloom sometimes, however, Kill 'em All has some good humor in it. However, the few seconds of Run To The Hills played at the end of Last Caress/Green Hell is pretty goofy, and thats what started this mock argument thing haha.
The ending is a back handed tribute and reference to Spike Jones "Beetlebaum" ending to the William Tell Overture from his "Murdering the Classics". Very rock and roll from all the way back in the 40's.
i like this cover actually, it's not trying to be the montrose song, it's played in a style that is strictly maiden and i can respect that. i like the montrose version much better and don't get what the hell bruce was doing in the bridge but hey, its a good cover.
yeah but I think they both had fun doing it, cause Maiden and Metallica respect each other. Bruce has interviewed Metallica once and Metallica mentionned iron maiden at the hall of fame.
No in the 80s they had a little rivalry that began with Maiden during Master Of Puppets era mostly due to Metallica over surpassing Maiden
Metallica where influenced by Maiden but did not stay quite and did that little joke of run to the hills at the end of the Misfits cover in there Garage days EP even Bruce talked bad about them on how they needed help during the SKOM Documentary. But its over now since Metallica has been on Bruces Radio show I guess
pretty interesting, I was surprised and all, cause Metallica did listen to Iron Maiden when NWOBM hit american grounds so I figured they were just joking and all, but I see what you mean.
@anthroscott If you listened to the original montrose version and heard the beginning you could say this is definitely the spaciest "classic" sounding guitar from the 70's besides uli jon roth and frank marino's playing..If maiden had done this remake before 1985, It would have captured the real feel of this killer classic metal song that nobody knows about really..If maiden could see the future back the early 80's to see what they did to this song? They would have buried their fucking heads!
So he can swear, too bad he can't sing.

Doesn't help that this was recorded in what was widely considered Bruce's worst vocal period.

@rockingrugger Hmm, actually now that I think about it, 'arsehole' would have to be Lars, and 'cunt' has to be Bob Rock.
