  • 1.5MB/s What kind of sorcery is this?

  • no trim !

  • Did you make these the boot drive ?

  • 510x4!?

    Wonderful speed !!

  • This is one very "drunk" video. =p

  • This vid is popular on Honiara

  • Hello, My question is this: I have an OCZ vertex 2 50 gb for a boot drive and it is almost full. I bought another of the exact drive. Can i put it in my computer on RAID 0 with the other drive and it will move half the data over to it or do i have to reinstall windows on an already configured dual 50GB boot drive?

  • Nerdgasm

  • Great test. I know that this wouldn't help OS boot times, but would it work to use software RAID on two PCI RAID controler cards, each with two SSDs? Like SLI GPUs. I wonder if that would help resolve the bottle neck?

  • 1.5 gb/s linus xD

  • numpty 1.5gb/s

  • Linus, did you test the new Adaptec 6000 series with ZMCP module with SSD's?

    Thanks

  • Where did you get the rack from? :)

  • woow!!! i guess 2 of them is just what i need..so i can load my huge kontakt library's on the fly....aaaaah money money money.

  • Nevermind, I should have watched the res of the vid, and I would have known lol

  • what is the software he is using to test the SSD read/write speed?

  • Whats the bootup time from this setup?

  • what is the best raid for performance ? and what is the best for data security ie. safe storage etc????

  • @leafboy412 Raid0 is the only one that would improve performance. It's not even actually a RAID, they just needed something to call it (hence the "0' designation). All of the other, actual types of RAID just add higher and higher levels of data redundancy.

  • lol @ 1:06

  • the 3 who disliked wanted to see the computer boot up!

  • Did you try plugging the additional two in the card's second connector?

  • Can anybody pleaseeee tell me what program he is using to test the read and write speeds

  • @deathrow989 he said it in the video "crystal disk mark"

  • i wish i can have just one of the Intel 510 120GB SSD

  • Comment removed

  • At 1:05 , does Linus say that we're looking at "about 1,5 megabytes/second read"?

  • linus, can you start tabulating all the results of all these test and summarizing cost vs gb vs speed?... for people who will want to practically use some of these test results... i would like to have a hojillion gb r/w but i cant realistically afford $4000 worth of storage medium...

  • 1.5 MB/s read? isn't it 1.5 GB/s?

  • who runs RAID 0?..

  • @mYOzZyKaT loads of people

  • @EmoticonMayhem is it the same people that cry a lot and play russian roulette with a musket?

  • @mYOzZyKaT no it's the same people who want snappy boot times

  • @EmoticonMayhem your boot time is in no way shape or form dependent upon raid... RAID is only used for people who need extreme access speed to their hard drives...

  • @mYOzZyKaT Yeah, exactly, if you have a RAID 0 boot drive then you will have increased startup times, Linus did an episode on this on his NCIXcom channel.

  • @EmoticonMayhem are you kidding me... raid 0 is for people who save or transfer large amount of data with no need for added safety... your boot time is not dependent upon your harddisk drives but on how fast your motherboard cycles through the bios and how fast your OS is to initialize drivers etc. which is done in RAM not on your harddrive

  • @mYOzZyKaT If the speed of your boot device has no effect on boot time how come SSDs increase boot time HMMM

  • @EmoticonMayhem In fact your comment proves you know absolutely nothing... reality is that SSD drives actually boot somewhat faster than regular drives.

The determining factor in how fast a drive boots in the cache and its access speed.

The amount of time during the whole bootup process that dependent upon data being moved from harddrive to memory is actually fairly small compared to the rest of the actions taken. Raid 0 is therefor not the determining factor in system boot time at all.

  • @mYOzZyKaT I probably should have said boot drives rather than boot drive since it's a RAID array, I word things badly sometimes

  • lame samsung did 24 ssd's lol comon linus step up your game haha (btw you havent done a give away in a while *hint hint*)

  • @yourbuddy7 i'm pretty sure they weren't that much faster ...if they were faster

  • Handy dandy handy dandy dandy handy dandy handy handy?

  • my calculations show that if no bottleneck existed you would be running at 1676.7 mbs seq read speeds.

I figured this out by finding the percentage of two drives between seq and 512k and assuming that the 4 drives are scaling the same way.

  • where can i get a test bench like the red one you have?

  • But how will it do with eight???

  • I love this guy, he's knowledgeable and enthusiastic about this stuff.

  • is this a good way of dealing with a damaged sata 1155 chipset

  • can someone explain me what RAID means?

  • @nathangek watch his video and u'll find out

  • @FELIX0123 i wachted the video, and here we are. so can you please explain?

  • @nathangek can u not read? i said his video. not this video. he made a video based on raids.

  • @nathangek check Linus's previous vids

  • @nathangek

Wikipedia it. Basically its where you use multiple hard drives for a few different reasons, depending on the raid setup, can be for speed or for data integrity etc. Raid 0 has no data integrity, it's done purely for speed (and if one hard drive happens to die, chances are all the data is lost). Very very simple rather than writing a single file to a single hard drive, it splits it across (in this case) 4 hard drives, and takes 1/4 of the time to write it.

  • @nathangek Redundant Array of Independent Disks is what it stands for. When it means is that when running raid the computer sees 2 or more hard drives as just one hard drive

  • did you void the other ssd warranty ??

  • Make a RAID of RAID cards. XD

  • wow that was a great comparison, good job. Hope soon they will have build in 4x - 8x SATA raid 0.

  • Extreme.

  • good performance...but having 4 SSDs on your desk, some would need a whole salary to buy that

  • What is your job???

  • 1:06 It's actually 1.5 Gb, not Mb, per second, otherwise it would be impresively LOW.

  • @MrDucktaper Actually its 1,5GB not Gb, a Gb is 1/8th of a GB.

  • @finbenton Why?

  • Holy crow. nice one

  • Linus what is your job? Does making youtube videos involve it or do you do it for fun?

  • need to do a raid 0+1

  • Linus, can you tell us your secret technique for not keeping your hardware desires in?

Seriously if I was there I would probably coincidently cum right all over that motherboard after seeing those benchmarks.

  • Crazy! Insane! Phenomenal! Mind blowing! Sick!

  • 1:04 "1.5MB/s read" xD

  • @Chruzha 1:04 Yeah, 1.5 MB/s and the raid card is bottlenecking. Poor card xD

  • @Chruzha lol, its actually 1.5 GB/s or 1500 MB/s(i know its not exact) xD fault on him

  • and this is for gaming right? :P

  • OZC vertex 3 coming soon !!!

  • Linus, do a review for OCZ Ibis XL 4TB SSD. Do it!

  • It still doesn't read and writes as fast as me

  • @robinspruit go ahead read a book measuring 1550MB in a second.

  • @ahgnfjie Done like a hundred times an just a second ago to

  • @ahgnfjie your brain is faster than that (hopefully)

  • So - is there a real world performance boost, or not?

  • Where can I get one of the open box ones?

  • give me one of those linus.... :)

  • I'm just curious as to what's the most advanced configuration you've got? Since you've no doubt in getting all the consumer parts in the world, I just wanna know what your 'maximum' is.

If anyway can answer this I'd appreciate it!

  • linus is excited thats why he didnt say it well

  • focus focus :))

  • as a non-nerd, I only understood about 10% of the vid lol

  • I assigned the letter "X:\" to my RAID array too :P.

  • Thumbs up if you want an video of him starting up windows :>

  • @fredde94chr bootracer would be nice but I doubt we'll see a lot of difference.

  • @fredde94chr Bootup isn't affected with an SSD. Still the same really, might just be a little quicker. It's not until Windows has finished loading and boots up till you notice a difference.

  • @fredde94chr Yes fucking please!

  • sweet

  • those drives are a tad too pricey for me :(

better off getting a revodrive x2 instead, or another alternative

  • can sony vaio z fit in 1 intel 510 ssd 250 gb?

  • @lamwilson1207 if it takes a standard 2.5" drive then I would see no reason why it wouldn't work

  • 2600k @ 3.4ghz how dare you

  • I want your job.

  • @KodessR I think we all want his job, lol :D

  • @KodessR NCIX whatever you are paying Linus I'll do it for HALF!

  • Are your family proud of you without them knowing what you are doing :)

  • Wtf do you do that u need all this shit in ur PC?

  • @TRAMAeagle It would be more useful for servers

  • 3:36 "yeeaaaaaah, that'll do"

  • You can choose:

    a) The new Ferrari 458 or

    b) Linus computer.

    Same value

  • 1.5MB/s. Damn, that's slightly faster than my broadband!

  • 1:05 1.5 MEGABYTE?

    so slow;D

  • Powercolor hd 6990 crossfire !!! /watch?v=KTzFGqa9Fd0&feature=feedu

  • is that really necessary?

  • Hey!! motherboardorg got hd 6690 ! /watch?v=YZNPB3KGwgw&feature=feedu

  • And 1,5gb/s is astronomical(wow). But as we understand in "real" life tests it s a bit lover...

  • review the 6990!

  • Holy **** :)

  • i dont even use the Media Center.lol

  • Yes kids, this setup can be yours, for the cost of your first born!

  • 1.5 mb/s? So you can't even play pacman, it will take too long to load levels... not satisfied...

  • So this is what you do at 11 pm!!!

  • 1.5 MB/S??? LOL...It's 1.5 GB/S!!!

  • cow how big are the monitors

  • @Island728 its just an lcd tv, still only 1920x1080 :(

  • I love this video so much I downloaded it and put it on my iPhone 4. Great video, I like. you are one my favorite PC tech guy. You've always got sweet hardware in your videos. I love the PC internals you have set up in the open.

  • I love this video so much I downloaded it and put it on my iPhone 4. Great video, I like. you are one my favorite PC tech guy.

  • Solid state-of-the-art drive

  • thats over 1000 dollars though. u get what u pay for. wait till those prices come down. thats gonna be the true surprise.

  • no windows boot test? :(

  • lol anyone see that video of those other dudes who had 24 ssd drives together?

  • @fartmonkey200 Pm link me?

  • HOLE-E

    CROW.

  • Holy shit.

  • each drive is about $300... thats $1200 in hard drives alone

  • where is that 24 drive raid 0 redo with ssd's

  • The writes.. OH GOD THE WRITE SPEED....

  • :O

  • All you guys that are saying 1.5 MB/s are in need of glasses....it is 1550 MB/s Duh!!!!

  • Can somebody explain, in noob form, exactly what he's comparing? And what and SSD is...

  • @Blaxot solid state drive and if raid zero with 2 vs with 1 raid zero basically divides the reading and writing between the two (or 4)at the same time

  • @Blaxot ssd is like a normal hard drive, execept it doesnt use disks, its all flash memory. Pretty much, has a smaller capacity but a much faster speed.

  • @Blaxot he's comparing 2 SSDs to 4 SSDs. Using RAID0 you can read and write to 2 or more drives at the same time, basically increasing the speed with each additional drive. An SSD is a big flash drive, no moving parts like a HDD and they are really fast. You can boot up Windows in less than 30 seconds and using Linus' setup it'd probably take a lot less.

  • i want his job

  • what is raid

  • isnt it 1550 mb/s not 1.5

  • Damn SSDs are still freaking expensive

  • HOLY SHIT 1.5MB/s That's faster than a floppy disk!!

  • SHOW BOOT UP TIME!

  • use a better ssd intel sucks and r more expensive

  • dam yo

  • I think the camera has ADHD...thumbs up if you agree

  • I honestly didnt know you could run 4 ssds in raid 0 using sata 6.0 via a pci internal raid controller. Thankyou for this, its made me re-think my storage upgrade.

  • do 510s have garbage collection?

  • What does the raid card do? Do you need one to set up raid?

  • @FerociousKitteh no unless ur motherboard doesnt support the specific raid configuration u want. in this case the p67 chipset can support 2way raid 0 via sata3 but if u want to go 4 way raid 0 via sata3 on this chipset u will need a raid controller!

  • @SepSama Oh, so it's just for more advanced setups. Thanks!

  • so how many secs for boot the computer? of course that if you use THIS configuration for boot only im going to kill you :)

  • show some real world file dragging

  • wait you can put 4 drives in raid 0?!?!

  • @brett1234 you can put as many drives in raid0 as you have money to

  • The 510 is fast, yo.

  • man u rock thx for sharing...

  • and the 6990?

  • @PcandTech It sucks balls....and Im an AMD fan. The cooling is shit and I guess the drivers for it are shit as well for right now :(

  • ..........Camera Man! Dun dun dun.......

  • Ummm, how much money do you have?

  • @BrianKMKH the parts are from ncix (the store he works at)

  • A whopping 1.5MB/s. Damn. ( 1:05 )

  • @rainy724 ITS 1.5 GB roughly

  • @rainy724 thats about how fast my shitty comp is :(

  • @rainy724 GB/s actually :P he messed up

  • @rainy724 he's had so many derps with these drives it's not even funny anymore.

  • @rainy724 1,5 GB/s!

  • @rainy724 1.5GB/S*

  • @Mr666DIE666 I know... He said MB/s. It made me giggle.
