There were actually quite a few "bubble cars" in production throughout the 40's-60's especially in Europe. Google "bubble cars" and click on Image Search. They have come back in the form of various small, efficient "smart cars". Check out the BMW Isetta, the Morgan three wheeler, or the Heinkel Trojan.
