  • AWSOME yes

  • AWESOME !!!

  • DAVID LINDLEY PLAYS STEEL ON THIS SONG

  • I'm already on the run....and I don't know what I'm gonna do....!!!!

  • I find it funny all the absolute guesses about this song. Look at the posts here and you will see no less than three musicians who did the slide work, five different theories of who the red neck friend is and several versions of what the song is about. I think the guess that the red neck friend is Jackson Brown's wiener is the funniest (dumbest) yet. You people crack me up!

  • One of my favorite songs!

FYI, the redneck isn't Dickey, it's Gregg Allman, but the song also has sexual innuendos. . The steel guitar on this song is Sneaky Pete Kleinow and the piano is Elton John under the name, Rockaday Johnnie.

  • Love David Lindley's slide on this song. Actually, I love his slide on all the Jackson Browne song he plays on.

  • @huskerspew Yuppers!

  • great song the song is about his private area & elton john is playing the piano undercover as rockaday johnny

  • how bout a spot of tea, must been good back then

  • From the standpoint of recording production, it's obvious why San Fransisco was once great and forever since has been little more than a bedroom community for the creatives from LA. Today, all the good music is coming from Europe.

  • I agree, y'all. Mabel, git out yer dancin' shoes l'il darlin' -we're goin' to frisco!

  • This tune rocks, baby....!!!!

  • Great tune ... hard for me to listen to early Jackson Browne and not think of slide/fiddle master David Lindley ... Wow

  • JACKSON BROWNE IS MY FAVORIATE ARTIST I LISTEN TO DAILY AND I LOVE THIS SONG I'VE HAD SOME TIMES TO THIS

  • Lost my virginity to this song; when her father caught us, I used a long and diverse dissection of JB's music to distract him from being upset. Hey, it worked! Thanks,jb

  • Just saw David Lindley last night.....what a show!!! still king of slide.

  • He's talking dicky all right but its not Dicky Betts.; )

  • Elton John on piano.

  • @carrywet No Greg Mitchell on Piano.

  • This song reminds me of listening to my dad play his guitar.....Lyrics/Meaning aside(for obvi reasons) just another classic rock song reminding me of the Hayfork days. Thanx for all the memories thru your music Dad E>Loki<N

A special man from the Delta playin the Blues!!

  • redneck friend is his penis

  • @FOAMER103061 We have a winnah.

  • I will never forget the 1st time I got to know the spirit of "Red Neck" years ago. If I remember correctly, Elton John played piano in this all-time Jackson Browne classic (albeit unique).

  • I thought he was tryin to get a girl to try cocaine for the first time.... Listen to it again.

  • reminds of driving from kingsman az to la ca, it was the perfect backdrop music in the beautiful scenery

  • how about all those good ol boys who took the bullet in the NAM???mike

  • ACTUALLY the slide guitar is played by David Lindley, a good friend of Browne's and LA studio musician with the whole Eagles/Linda Ronstadt/Warren Zevon crowd.

  • The best "rock&roll" song ever...period!!!!

  • So many people didn't know what this meant... Same as "Brain Salad Surgery." Thanks to the Internet, you can now look 'em up....

  • Kids, He is singing about his hard johnson! It's really quite obvious. NOW, listen once more. Go on, tell me I'm mistaken. No history lesson, just plain old hormones.

  • Two or three? Never met a Jackson Browne song I didn't like, most of his other stuff was kinda whiney, but well-written.

  • The sound on this is great! one of only two or three songs by this guy that's worth hearing.

  • Thanks for posting...my favorite JB tune!

  • Yeaahh,this is fu.....ng awesome.Love it.

    Thanks for sharing this.

  • somebody teach me what does it mean "red neck"???

  • @mojotaxicab Working-class people of the American southeastern region, typically of western European descent. The phrase itself is attributed to the backs of their necks burning red due to working out in the sun.

  • @EveryMn Actually it comes from tha battle for Blair mtn WV When union miners & mine owners' militia fought a shooting war back in the early 1900's. The union miners wore red bandanas to identify themselves & hopefully not shoot each other! It has since been pasted on everything from country folks to, as in the town where I grew up, someone who likes to fight! Go figure!

  • best guitar riff !!

  • I heard this today on the radio for the first time, good song!

  • I think the reality of the song is summed up in the last 3 lines:

Now honey don't just stand there

Lookin' like this dream will never end

Honey let me introduce you to my redneck friend

He's telling her that HE is the redneck and its time for her to see the real him...

  • Finally! I was looking for this for ages and I coudln't find it on here. (I gave up) woohoo!! What agreat song :D

  • this song is about masturbation. which doesn't mean that it is ISN'T about Dicky, in fact, it is about Dickey!

and it is 'rockaday' johnnie sheesh.

  • this song is about masturbation. which doesn't mean that it is ISN'T about Dicky, in fact, it is about Dickey!

  • BEST.

  • It's about a girl he wants to sleep with! The redneck friend is his penis... Shoulda been red-headed friend!

  • lol

  • @Maitreyafication Actually, his redneck friend is Dicky Betts, late of the Allmans. It's always a sign you're doing to many shrooms when you get kicked out of the ABB.

  • @danbaxley lol...his redneck friend is his dingdong...

  • best subtle song about masturbation ever!

  • @24drummonkey

Just how many songs about subtle masturbation have you heard? lmao

  • Jackson Browne, pride of southern Cali

  • I have loved this song for 37 years. Elton John plays the piano "rocket day johnnie"

  • His best song you never hear.

  • @MrRano55 I agree 100%

  • Cool post. It's been 30 or so years since I heard this I think. A lot of damn good memories.

  • Thanks for the real thing.

'Cause he's the missing link the kitchen sink

Eleven on a scale of ten

Honey let me introduce you to my redneck friend

  • @11xzxzxz - "It's ..living on a scale of ten"

  • @cdsorvinyl Funny. You keep yours on a scale? I need a hammock. Great song... forget politics and profoundness Jackson a little more and give us more of this kind of song..
