My mom even tucked slices of butter under the skin! I was raised with the pan of melted butter on the stove with the cheese cloth dipped into it and laid on top of the Turkey! then she did baste it with butter! Yummm probably why she had 2 heart bypass surgeries and a massive stroke...Happy Thanksgiving all!
Of course, the butter can't actually penetrate the fatty skin of the turkey, it just melts off to the side without actually touching the meat. But, no matter. 50 years later people would figure out that injecting butter and seasonings directly into the turkey made much more sense. Basting is also a waste too, as all it does is keep decreasing the temp of the oven, but that's another story. Mmm ! Butter !
Ed Prentiss was one of the original actors who portrayed "CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT" on radio in the '40s. He later divided his time between acting, appearing in commercials, and voice-over work. This spot, on behalf of the American Dairy Association, appeared on "DISNEYLAND" (they were one of the program's initial sponsors) and other shows they sponsored at the time...
Actually, they have now found out that high cholesterol is not bad for you and your cholesterol levels are based on your genetics. Butter, a natural food, is 100 times better than margarine which is processed and a grey liquid dyed to look like butter yuck! Bacon and butter for me and cream too!
It's the only thing that keeps the bird moist and gives it flavor. If you don't believe it, next Thanksgiving or Christmas, set your bird in the oven, uncovered and unbuttered. Happy brick eating.
Butter is great!

I hate it when my "turkey" "shrinks" in the "oven".

Raising the perfect housewife. The parents would probably have a heart attack if they knew what she was going to do in the 60's.

I'm disturbed by the way they keep referring to the turkey at "him."

"the butter can't actually penetrate the fatty skin of the turkey, it just melts off to the side without actually touching the meat."
Butter basting clogs the pores of the skin, helping to keep the juices sealed in the bird.
"Basting is also a waste too, as all it does is keep decreasing the temp of the oven"
Only if you baste too often and/or take too long to baste.
Plus, there are other preparations that can help keep a turkey from drying out, such as brining.

@Watcher3223 you BUTTER HATER.....how can you live with yourself

@inkey2
And how did you come to that conclusion?
Dude, because of what butter does to the skin of the turkey, it's IDEAL for basting.
And, when I roast a bird, I use a baste made of a mixture of melted butter and cinnamon.
