The eclectic style of Schnittke is perhaps the reason why his music is worth listening.
In my opinion he is one of very few modern composers whose music is not just about cacophony but about human emotionality in its variety and richness.
This is amazing, I had just listened to this in its entirety, what a man, now thats what I call modern music, his hybridization of all things avant garde and traditional makes it great to listen to.
the lady playing the cello in the very beggining in the close up behing the girl playing violin works at my school as the the orchestra teacher, i have her!
I would love to have this on CD - is A Far Cry planning to record any of Schnittke's concerto grossos, especially this one? This is an absolutely stunning piece and performance.
Good question! Why are they standing? I' ll enhance Mankind with my opinion. First,
they don't have a conductor. In a way, they have to "feel" each other! Each musician, is a "conductor",though, they probably have a "chief" musician.Secondly, by standing, moving , they have the "feel" of a soloist, like playing a concerto on his/her own instrument. That alone, gives the orchestra "special" sound, feel..... I could continue, but I have to stop!.....Peace!
This really was the pinnacle of Schnittke's years of history-learning compositions. At the end of this section things get really out of hand. Where he was 'only' mocking Corelli and Mozart before, now he turns on Beethoven (and this performance makes this da-da-da-dummm section much more vivid and offensive than any other I've heard) and even Mahler (via the prepared piano - perhaps a sign of their shared sense of 'outsider'ness). This is the creative artist at breaking point. Masterpiece.
I SO wish this guy were still alive and creating more music like this today...
