@frotttiop i have to disagree, i absolutely love the CFM-56's we have on the KC-135 now...nearly double the thrust really allows the plane to shine when it come to the capability of that airframe...lightweight that baby is a complete rocket...the old e-models weren't half as capable
@dogdays6708 - Flew on one back in the 1960's. Great airplane. The older planes were noisier due to the low-bypass turbo fan engines. The 707 was the first successful jet airliner. I know the Comet flew first but it was withdrawn due to fuselage fatigue failures and never really was able to come back from that.
@Orca40. The US fleet was mainly KC135s, which had a smaller wing, and narrower fusilage-the CF ones were commercial pattern 707-347C's that were not taken up by Western Airlines 1970-1 and bought by Canada on relatively short notice as the CC 106 Yukons (Canadair Britannia clone) were having maint and parts issues. The CF ones used drogue/pod, not the USAF style flying boom of the KC135. Believe 2 x 310 are outfitted with a similar system., having been fitted with cargo doors mid 90s.
@Orca40 I believe there was a study done to consider replacing the TF33 Turbo fans on the BUFF with 4 RR R211 engines like used on the 757, but it never went anywhere. As for the 707 in CF service, they were worn out from 27 years or hard use, high cycles flying service air schedule across Canada, and just were not reliable enough to keep around. Spares were also becoming very expensive, given no reputable airline was using them in any numbers, so they were retired for 5 x A310-300.
@Orca40 Statistically its not much safer to fly on Boeing as A380 doesnt have any crashes or fatal accidents so it cant be compared yet. And im talking about DESIGN PROBLEM that was on every 737 before it was fixed. Also cargo door design problem was on every 747. It has nothing to do with flight hours.
The RCAF ceased to exist in 1968, two years before the 707 entered service with the Canadian Forces....Flew many hours in these, coast to coast in Canada and across to pond to Lahr and on to Cyprus a number of times. This one has refuelling pods on the end of the wingtips. Believe four of five airframes are still flying as JStars in USAF service.
I Love the Boeing 707, Its even better in the RCAF colors, The sound of those Pratt & Whitney JT3D TurboJet Engines is awesome! such a great video too
I won't even fly in an Airbus and never will. If you dont use Boeing I don't want to use your service. Example: All the A380 issues and having to ground the entire fleet to fix parts! No thanks, Ill stay with tried and true Boeing.
@Sp33dyD3m0n Bullshit. A380 has issue with only Rolls Royce engines, other A380 aircrafts that used other engines were not grounded. By the way 2 Boeing 737´s crashed because of design problem with rudder system, after third accident where no one died and cause was found Boeing had to ground entire B737 fleet and fix that design error. Before that cargo door flew from one 747, which was caused by malfunction in unsafe cargo door system. Many passengers sucked out from the plane.
I love that sound !!! Living near BWI ( Baltimore Friendship Int'l Airport ) I got to see and hear all the great jets of yesteryear. The 707 rocks ! Thanks for posting this !
@johnmunoz18 The A350 is much more a 777 competitor than a 787 competitor though it is not quite as large. The 787 replaces the 767 and competes with the A330.
those old P&W low bypass ratio turbofans are some noisy and smoky mofo's. I wonder if they could retrofit these planes with CFM56 engines....modern, quiet, efficient.
@meccaturbo Boeing actually considered a "modern" retrofitted version of the 707 with the CFMs back in the early 1980s, but decided against it instead concentrating on selling the 757.
@meccaturbo That's what the KC-135R was retrofitted with. Definitely much quieter. Probably one of the most quiet takeoff rolls I've ever heard. Still can't beat the sound of the TF33, though. :-)
A real lady and she looks and sounds better than that A380 abortion. Who had the smart idea of building a uneconomic and fuel wasting plane during the worst depression since the 1930s whereas Boeing the premier planemaker built the economic Dreamliner. Trust the bloody europeans to screw it up again!
Love this. Reminds me of when I was a kid and would hear them all the time heading into Philadelphia International. If Canada is anything like the US, military aircraft are exempt from the noise regulations so planes like this can fly the way they were meant to: LOUDLY!
I worked for BA who, many years ago, were handling agents for the CAF B707s and C130s operating out of Gatwick, UK. Happy memories of the great CAF guys based at Gatwick!
I would not be suprise I flew on this particular plane during my toure in CFE Base Lahr. I did 14 trips across the pond on these plane. I remember we were betting how many bounce we would do on landing, the one further from the actual count would pay the beer... Oh yeah, great souvenires.
@the18gearJammer Water injection quenches the flame in the combustion chamber a bit allowing unburned fuel to escape which accounts for why the smoke is black. So it is probably kind of dirty, but it sure looks cool.
@sbt8426 i dont trust a computer that has angle limiters, major cockpit blackouts regularly, and relies on the computer to land. I trust a pilot at the yoke.

I remember servicing these 707s when I worked on the ramp for Air Canada in YVR. They used to hop across Canada carrying troops and their families. One once taxied in with the number 3 reverser stuck open. One of the pilots came down and tapped it with a 2x4 until it stowed! Hillarious! i don't think flying the 707s was highly regarded position!
Had a similar experience with a Kenya airways 737 in June at Kigali airport. It was a nerve racking flight for most passengers for the 1 hour flight back to Nairobi especially after she did a brake test after accelerating on the runway - without telling the passengers.
Terrific video! The 707 was such a beautiful airplane; I flew American Airlines' last flight of the 707 from New York to Bermuda and back and will always remember it.
Last time I heard, the only place where 707s were still being used for passenger service was on some domestic flights in Iran. A few cargo airlines elsewhere still use them, though, there is also the famous John Travolta 707-138 private jet in Qantas livery, and there are a few more in military or VIP service (esp. in Africa). I am old enough to have flown them 3x - including one that later crashed. Nothing special, really. I actually loved the 727's strong takeoff pull.
Since even today's latest 737-900ERs still use the same 707 cabin cross-section of 50+ years ago, it's other details that make the difference for the passenger. The 707 was a remarkable achievement and changed the world making it smaller, but it's nothing special to fly on. But the 727... the cabin was the same, but the flight was not. You could feel the power of that bird from your seat as she took off. Smooth, fastest Boeing ever, quiet inside because of the engines on the rear... I loved it!
Yeah if you think about it, a lot of the 707 design is still used today. Even loosely in Airbus's. Wasn't the 707 based on something too? Not sure if anything existed like that before.
Boeing started the 707 project as a jet-powered military tanker, but it was obviously so much modified for civilian use that in the end it can be considered an original project. Even the first commercially flown 707 had a lot of changes from the "Dash 8" prototype in which Tex Johnston made his legendary loop in 1955, to the astonishment of all at Boeing (you can find that video here on YouTube).
I'm 48, so I was able to fly on such noisy smokers as the 707, 737-200, BAC One Eleven, DC-8-63 (only once and hated it because the cabin air was too dry and it made my nose sore), 727-100, Trident 3, 747-100... And the turboprops: NAMC YS-11 (my first flight, in 1969), Vickers Viscount, HS-748 Avro, Lockheed Electra... Many airlines I've flown don't exist any more, like Transbrasil or Braniff. Flying was such an experience back then... Southwest or Ryanair anyone? :-(
Transbrasil was a major Brazilian airline, with mostly domestic service. It went bankrupt in 2001. Braniff was a very large American airline based in Dallas, with an extensive domestic and international network (the DC-8 I flew was theirs). It was grounded in the late '80s.
Coincidentally, both airlines I mentioned used to have planes painted in shocking bright colors: yellow, orange, purple, electric blue... Braniff even had a DC-8 with a very crazy livery designed by Alexander Calder.
Jokes - a 707 is no way louder than the Concorde - do you realize how fast and powerful a Concord really is? About 1336 Mph is roughly the speed that they travel, compared with a 598 Mph or so 707? No chance the Concord is truly the loudest - ask anyone. I loved the awesome sight of Concorde however there were thousands in local area constantly protesting against Concord flights due to noise pollution over their houses etc.
Running rick? It is good, these were proper planes. Actually tyhese planes were NOT THAT LOUD. Try listening to the Tupolev or Illushyn Russian (if it is splt correct) aircraft. They are proper loud.
Proper planes? Yeah, but they're sooooooooooooo outdated it's not even funny. And they're loud. You'll go noggin deaf behind one. Have you ever seen a jet engine misfire? On a 707 it's eardrum shattering.
Brov I've lived under Concordes flight path since I was born so I'm used to loud planes, trust me the 707 is nothing compared to even the Russian aircraft listed in the previous comment. I fly myself and they constantly test DC-8 and 707 planes engines at the airfield and if anything they are a joy to hear - real engineering. Unlike these rice wispers we have today.
Those were first generation turbo fans on this plane. In the Air Force they were called TF-33's. I forgot what the civillian equivallant was. A water injection take off using turbo jets, now that was a sight to see.
The engines are running a lot cleaner than they used to in the early days of 707 operation. I have seen 707s on take-off leaving smoke trails you could just about cut with a knife.
707 development, which came not long after the Comet, was focused on not repeating the failures of the Comet. It was carefully designed to be as strong as possible and so it's a safe airplane.
The 707 has never had a loss over the Atlantic Ocean! Quite remarkable given that it flew from 1958 throught the 1980s over millions of mile-hours. I loved this aircraft and had the pleasure of boarding dozens of them all over the world from 1960 to 1981.
oh really. remember this: EVERY single breath you take produces Co2. Every move you make causes pollution. Now, I hope that causes you sleeples nights.
There's a lot of things that you do not know and if you said that every time you heard something new, you would probably say nothing else - forever - given the appropriate environment.
People can be quite sarcastic and mean hearted on the youtube, but bare in mind the camera angle looking from behind through the trail of jet fumes most likely a mile long you will find it is running quite efficiently given how many people you can fit on board/millage it is far more efficient than any other transport known.
Duh....did I miss something? This was billed as being the best 707 vid on the web....No way dude. The old guy doing the barrell roll in the 707 is better than this vid.

Terrific video! The 707 was such a beautiful airplane; I flew American Airlines' last flight of the 707 from New York to Bermuda and back and will always remember it.

Is the 707 still in service anywhere? Any still flying?
agentfazexx 2 years ago
Last time I heard, the only place where 707s were still being used for passenger service was on some domestic flights in Iran. A few cargo airlines elsewhere still use them, though, there is also the famous John Travolta 707-138 private jet in Qantas livery, and there are a few more in military or VIP service (esp. in Africa). I am old enough to have flown them 3x - including one that later crashed. Nothing special, really. I actually loved the 727's strong takeoff pull.
goytabr 2 years ago
Wow, lucky! 727's are really nice planes.
agentfazexx 2 years ago
Since even today's latest 737-900ERs still use the same 707 cabin cross-section of 50+ years ago, it's other details that make the difference for the passenger. The 707 was a remarkable achievement and changed the world making it smaller, but it's nothing special to fly on. But the 727... the cabin was the same, but the flight was not. You could feel the power of that bird from your seat as she took off. Smooth, fastest Boeing ever, quiet inside because of the engines on the rear... I loved it!
goytabr 2 years ago
Yeah if you think about it, a lot of the 707 design is still used today. Even loosely in Airbus's. Wasn't the 707 based on something too? Not sure if anything existed like that before.
agentfazexx 2 years ago
Boeing started the 707 project as a jet-powered military tanker, but it was obviously so much modified for civilian use that in the end it can be considered an original project. Even the first commercially flown 707 had a lot of changes from the "Dash 8" prototype in which Tex Johnston made his legendary loop in 1955, to the astonishment of all at Boeing (you can find that video here on YouTube).
goytabr 2 years ago
727 is fastest Boeing at low altitude, but 747 is fastest at high altitude.
411 kts for the 727 was smokin!
MrExspert 2 years ago
I'm 48, so I was able to fly on such noisy smokers as the 707, 737-200, BAC One Eleven, DC-8-63 (only once and hated it because the cabin air was too dry and it made my nose sore), 727-100, Trident 3, 747-100... And the turboprops: NAMC YS-11 (my first flight, in 1969), Vickers Viscount, HS-748 Avro, Lockheed Electra... Many airlines I've flown don't exist any more, like Transbrasil or Braniff. Flying was such an experience back then... Southwest or Ryanair anyone? :-(
goytabr 2 years ago
Wow you definately have a history. Can't say I've heard of Transbrasil or Braniff. Where are they based out of?
Ah the nostalgia thinking of Vickers and the Lockheed Electra :)
agentfazexx 2 years ago
Transbrasil was a major Brazilian airline, with mostly domestic service. It went bankrupt in 2001. Braniff was a very large American airline based in Dallas, with an extensive domestic and international network (the DC-8 I flew was theirs). It was grounded in the late '80s.
Coincidentally, both airlines I mentioned used to have planes painted in shocking bright colors: yellow, orange, purple, electric blue... Braniff even had a DC-8 with a very crazy livery designed by Alexander Calder.
goytabr 2 years ago
Ah alright, makes sense. The livery you mention rings a bell now.
How does the DC-8 handle compared to modern aircraft? Are you still flying?
agentfazexx 2 years ago
YEp!! still fliying..in Iran? or irak i don't remember ....ohh also the john travolta's plane it's a 707
pereo145 2 years ago
Jokes - a 707 is no way louder than the Concorde - do you realize how fast and powerful a Concord really is? About 1336 Mph is roughly the speed that they travel, compared with a 598 Mph or so 707? No chance the Concord is truly the loudest - ask anyone. I loved the awesome sight of Concorde however there were thousands in local area constantly protesting against Concord flights due to noise pollution over their houses etc.
Backin1985 2 years ago
Running rick? It is good, these were proper planes. Actually tyhese planes were NOT THAT LOUD. Try listening to the Tupolev or Illushyn Russian (if it is splt correct) aircraft. They are proper loud.
Backin1985 2 years ago
Proper planes? Yeah, but they're sooooooooooooo outdated it's not even funny. And they're loud. You'll go noggin deaf behind one. Have you ever seen a jet engine misfire? On a 707 it's eardrum shattering.
peepeevagi 2 years ago
Brov I've lived under Concordes flight path since I was born so I'm used to loud planes, trust me the 707 is nothing compared to even the Russian aircraft listed in the previous comment. I fly myself and they constantly test DC-8 and 707 planes engines at the airfield and if anything they are a joy to hear - real engineering. Unlike these rice wispers we have today.
Backin1985 2 years ago
Rice whisperers, lol.
You've just never been around a loud 707.
A big, old, way past it's servicing life 707.
A concorde is loud, psh, but a janky 707 is louder.

MarsFKA 2 years ago 2
707 development, which came not long after the Comet, was focused on not repeating the failures of the Comet. It was carefully designed to be as strong as possible and so it's a safe airplane.
transdrole 2 years ago
The 707 has never had a loss over the Atlantic Ocean! Quite remarkable given that it flew from 1958 throught the 1980s over millions of mile-hours. I loved this aircraft and had the pleasure of boarding dozens of them all over the world from 1960 to 1981.

my god,i did not know that
Jurassicparkrules95 2 years ago
There's a lot of things that you do not know and if you said that every time you heard something new, you would probably say nothing else - forever - given the appropriate environment.
updougdown 2 years ago
People can be quite sarcastic and mean hearted on the youtube, but bare in mind the camera angle looking from behind through the trail of jet fumes most likely a mile long you will find it is running quite efficiently given how many people you can fit on board/millage it is far more efficient than any other transport known.
