Still, I don't think letting the west in is a good idea, really. The sheer amount of retards here (at youtube) should be warning enough. Those who really want to use the site will do so eventually, be it through learning Japanese or any of the other languages NicoNico already does support. While my personal opinion is that it's not too much to ask of someone who enjoys the content there to learn a few katakana (all important functionality is actually in English, just written the Japanese way), it's not a requirement. There are guides and interface translations out there. I remember there even was one here on YT. But the discussion is kind of pointless now anyway, as it appears Nico is planning to do a worldwide expansion starting late 2009. They even want to challenge Youtube.

A little competition never hurt anyone. Asking someone to learn a "few katakana" is a little bigger than you'd expect. (finding someone/something to teach it, mainly, as well as being busy learning other languages for a school credit) Anyhow, if the English Nico Nico becomes too much of an issue, they can always just shut it down and site the failed attempt when further requests for an English Nico Nico are made.

it's easy as hell to learn katakana, just have one or two lessons on pronounciation of japanese sounds and vowels and send them on their way with a katakana and hiragana chart
