talk about depressing....he does shit with one hand I cant even do with two......thank god I have arthritis and cant play anymore...........Billy Sheehan rules!!!!
His tone is unmistakable imo. Unique...I think the meat in his hands have the most impact on his sound. Sounds like the neck is VERY straight. Gives a nice sustain that is not available on a concave fingerboard. That plus the maple. 5:08-ish is b*tching!
When Neil Peart from Rush does a solo and no-one can sing along as it's an expression of what he's capable of doing does that mean he's crap? Solo's of any kind are a kind of divulgence fair enough but this guy is anything but brilliant at what he does.
eusebioxxy, it's too bad you feel nothing. I feel inspired/challenged by what can be achieved on a 4 string electric bass. He was changing keys between techniques, none of it seemed atonal. It wasn't a song, but an introduction of his style of unaccompanied solo to the clinic goers. Hence the title "Intro Bass Solo". The legato stuff at 5:05 and the arpeggios at 5:50 are sweet. His right hand picking and the raking stuff he does is phenomenal.
And for you Sheehan fans out there, I just bought the Yamaha Attitude LTD in Lava Red and it is the most amazing sounding bass ever! Beware however, the neck is THE fatest and widest 4 string neck I've played EVER.
I highly recommend this powerhouse of a bass guitar.

I Agree. This is crap. Billy has his moments. But this is bad. He has been playing the same crap since '83. the double stop hack fest is to obnoxious to even listen too. OK YOU CAN SHRED WITH THREE FINGERS. Whoo freakin doo! That is considered cheating anyway isn't it? LOL!!!
Let's not get carried away -- first of all why should Billy change his style? Afterall, a style of play is a person's SIGNATURE. Secondly this is not meant to be anything other than a showcase by a someone who changed how bass is both played and perceived. And third [no pun], the three finger attack is not "cheating" it's merely a matter of choice. As a three finger player I can attest to how much work it requires. In the end, all that matter's is what the musician says, not how they say it.
Don't get me wrong. I like billy. I just thyink there is a time to start doing new stuff. You gotta admit. There is a period he just wanks off. We can all wank off. Also. The three finger thing is awesome. It changed my style for the better. But like I said. He has been playing the same crap for a long time. Even Joe and Steve comes up with new stuff..
I think some of the stuff Billy is doing now [both with Niacin and his solo records] is truly fresh for him while retaining his signature style. "guitar hero" players who have been around for a while -- have a style; a voice if you will. And it doesn't change.
Billy, despite his soloing ability is truly a SUPPORT player [even he will admit this]. Your comparing him to Joe and Steve is counter-intuitive. Those are solo artists who are able to stand alone.
When it comes right down to it, creativity will always eventually lose to longevity. By this I mean the longer an artist stays in the public eye, the more their style begins to sound like a cliche. As an example, Jaco Pastorius began as a very fresh and inspiration bass guitarist -- but his biggest fear was sounding like a rehash. And honestly, near the end of his life, his music WAS predictable. It's just the nature of the beast. It doesn't make either of them any less of a genius however.
Nozzmo, you say Billy has been playing the same crap since 83? If you had any kind of developed ear you'd hear the evolution he has made. Billy is first and formost a great bass player, and songwriter. Let me ask you, how is your technique coming along? Or do you sound like a clone clown with that farty percussive nonsense? Get a life and look in the mirror before you ever pass judgement on a bass legend like Billy.
Yeah ithree fingers is cheating, if your playing country or gospel music. When you start getting royalty's from 3 different bands for one song(Shyboy), all three of those albums selling millions and still selling, then you can talk shit. until then good luck playing with yourself.

WOW, thats f'n amazing. I think he hits every note on the neck before he's done a couple hundred times.

I think the tone's for definition. He probably changes tone to suit the music.
Its easier for us to hear the many different notes when played with a little more treble.
