I'm from western pa and we have a slight drawl out in my parts. Tends to happen in rural country areas and listening to country tends to help that along but women with it... Now that's worth listening to.

I've found that most men think that women with Southern accents are adorable, and I get the most vitriol from the Yankee girls who can't compete with that. And yes, "despite" my accent, I am intelligent: I am a Registered Nurse and I graduated in the top 5% of my class. My patients always seem to love having a Southern gal taking care of them. :-)

On the one hand, so many of them are fond to mock them, yet at the same time they secretly envy their accents, their friendly attitudes, their shapely bodies, (yes, on average Southern women have better bodies and more curves), and, ofcourse, their ability to seduce their men. In short. Southern women are simply the best! :)

@publicatdamagnificen I appreciate your question and I'll try my best to answer it. There are some subcultures in the South where blacks and whites pronounce things almost the same. I'm not talking "ghetto" black, like modern rappers, but a dialect along the SC coast here called "Gullah." It is actually a recognized language along the SC barrier islands and the "white version" of Gullah is often referred to as "Geechie," especially around the Charleston area where I live.
@publicatdamagnificen There are some really good websites that you can Google to find out more information about Gullah and Geechie. It is a fascinating cultural study! The Gullah language developed from a mixure of English and Creole/African language and is lovely to listen to. I went on a home visit with another nurse from Ohio to one of the barrier islands here and she warned me that I wouldn't be able to understand the patient--imagine her surprise when I understood everything, LOL!

@publicatdamagnificen Well, I guess the answer to your question would be an honest "I don't know." I have a couple of black nursing colleagues who do speak with a Southern twang, so your question certainly bears some pondering! :-)
@publicatdamagnificen Whites and blacks here do speak with a similar accent, pronunciation of the vowels is generally the same(which is what makes a specific accent anyway). There are some differences though which are noticeable and hard to explain right off hand, but the accents are generally the same for most. I also don't understand what you mean by "good English". Do you mean proper English? They teach that in the South as well, I had to study it in grade school and college.
Having a certain accent doesn't mean that a person's English is "good". I speak with a strong Alabama accent and speak proper English. Technically if we were going to go that route, we could say no one can speak with "good English" except the English, because that's where the language originated from. Fortunately, proper English is determined by using proper grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure and not something as arbitrary as the way people pronounce their vowel sounds.

Childrens tv shows , especially British ones , that air in the USA are always dubbed over with new voices to remove all accents. Production companies are told by the US stations that "Americans don't like accents " or "the children won't understand it". its a little sad...

@ProctoLion I have a sincere question. I am a black male born and raised in Michigan. My parents were both from Mississippi who spoke good english. Why is it that black southerners don't talk with a twang or a drawl like white southerners do? I'm not trying to be funny I'm just curious.

@publicatdamagnificen I appreciate your question and I'll try my best to answer it. There are some subcultures in the South where blacks and whites pronounce things almost the same. I'm not talking "ghetto" black, like modern rappers, but a dialect along the SC coast here called "Gullah." It is actually a recognized language along the SC barrier islands and the "white version" of Gullah is often referred to as "Geechie," especially around the Charleston area where I live.

@publicatdamagnificen There are some really good websites that you can Google to find out more information about Gullah and Geechie. It is a fascinating cultural study! The Gullah language developed from a mixure of English and Creole/African language and is lovely to listen to. I went on a home visit with another nurse from Ohio to one of the barrier islands here and she warned me that I wouldn't be able to understand the patient--imagine her surprise when I understood everything, LOL!

@publicatdamagnificen Well, I guess the answer to your question would be an honest "I don't know." I have a couple of black nursing colleagues who do speak with a Southern twang, so your question certainly bears some pondering! :-)

@publicatdamagnificen Whites and blacks here do speak with a similar accent, pronunciation of the vowels is generally the same(which is what makes a specific accent anyway). There are some differences though which are noticeable and hard to explain right off hand, but the accents are generally the same for most. I also don't understand what you mean by "good English". Do you mean proper English? They teach that in the South as well, I had to study it in grade school and college.

Having a certain accent doesn't mean that a person's English is "good". I speak with a strong Alabama accent and speak proper English. Technically if we were going to go that route, we could say no one can speak with "good English" except the English, because that's where the language originated from. Fortunately, proper English is determined by using proper grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure and not something as arbitrary as the way people pronounce their vowel sounds.

Why are Americans so obsessed about accents and seemingly wanting everyone to sound the same? I love the diversity of accents you hear in the US. Childrens tv shows , especially British ones , that air in the USA are always dubbed over with new voices to remove all accents. Production companies are told by the US stations that "Americans don't like accents " or "the children won't understand it". its a little sad...

I'm from Mississippi, and i don't even hear your accent that gets on peoples nerves so much. I don't have an accent, but i know plenty of people that do. They can all think what they want, but we Southerners are just like everybody else, but nicer. (: MS is the hospitality state!
