  • i would like to buy my 1st speedlight so would u recommend me to buy sb 600. im using d5000 btw. would u recommend any 3rd party speedlight such as nissin di866.

  • @iwaklelee the sb-600 is discontinued and replaced with new sb-700. sorry, we don't have any experience with dirty cheap third party flashes except for quantum but we know for sure: sb-700 has a lot more to offer than third party flashes.

  • @superkiwizorro there is camera shop still selling sb 600 at my place. but actually im in budget i can get sb 600 for RM5xx and i cant afford to buy the sb 700. would u recommend me to buy sb 600 or just save some money to get the sb 700

  • @iwaklelee save up for the sb-700, it's worth the wait.

  • Can anyone please help me.. Im trying to find how to fix my flash.. How do i fix the settings so i can have my sb600 wireless WITHOUT haveing to use my buildt in flash to use it? Please exusue my english im not so good at it.. hope you understaand please help!

  • If your camera has built-in Commander Mode and flash, Nikon SG-3IR will do the trick. This panel basically blocks the onboard flash from throwing light onto your subject but will still trigger the SB-600 wirelessly.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 But surely the pop up flash can be set in the camera so that it does Not effect the exposure?

  • @pjos111 yeah but it'll still affect the pictures anyway. remote flashes need a signal from onboard flash to trigger wirelessly.

  • Not all of my shots had softness. I use a Tokina AF-X Pro 28-70 mm lens, which is hardly a cheap one. Are you suggesting that I shoot on my camera's manual mode, or my flash's, or both simultaneously?

  • Most of third party lenses, especially Tokina, are very well known for softness, that's one of the possibilities. "Manually adjust the shutter speed..." means manual mode on the camera, of course. Leave the flash in TTL, it'll take care of the exposure by itself. Auto FP is only effective at shutter speeds faster than 1/250s.

  • I shot with my D80 at ISO 400 on A mode at f5.6, with a shutter speed of 1/60. I metered my shots using center-weighted metering. My flash was set on TTL FP. Many of these photos were shot at less than 20 feet from my subjects.

  • Hmm. Some low quality lenses are known for delivering softness, even at F/5.6. Try again but using manual mode and manually adjust the shutter speed into higher speeds (1/125s or 1/250s). Sharpen the RAW photos in a RAW processing software. If using faster shutter speeds and sharpening don't help then it's the lens.

  • I sometimes get softness in my photos when I use my SB 600 despite shooting at f 5.6, which is my lens' sweet spot. Why is this happening? I'm very careful to keep the camera steady when I shoot. Nevertheless, I still get soft photos at times.

  • What about the shutter speed and ISO sensitivity? More information please.

  • this was really helpfull thanks :)

  • Is the $100 price difference worth it?

  • $100 difference from what? HDTV? Turbo upgrade for your car? Xbox 360?

Anyways, well, it's up to you to decide.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 from the SB-700. :) You're funny! :))

  • Ah.

Oh, yeah, SB-700 has more bells and whistles (feature-wise) than the SB-600.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Thanks! :)) I almost fell for your April-fools prank. :D

  • does it work with the nikon d70s?

  • Yes but SB-600 is now discontinued and replaced by SB-700.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 do you know why Nikon discontinued the SB-600? Thank you!

  • It's pretty obvious. Nikon discontinued it because SB-700 is new and took over. SB-600 is 7 years old and extremely overdue for a facial makeover.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Oh ok! I thought it was somethin else co'z am doin a lil research about flashes. Co'z some Best Buy stores still sells em am assuming that's the last of there stock tryin to get rid of it. Thank you for your reply.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 oh sweet i'll have to look into getting one now for my old d40

  • Ok, thanks.

Hey, Im sorry for to leave a message as 7 times, but it was not my intention.

  • the SB-600 is shareable with D3100?

thanks if you can answer me.

  • First, stop reposting same comment 7 times, it requires an approval.

Second, SB-600 is compatible with all digital SLR's. Please do not turn off video annotations because it answered your question.

  • "Perhaps read your user's manual? It will take a whole book to explain it to you." -Lilkiwiguy87

    <3 +1 LOL!

  • ok i looked on some videos and i understood how to do but when i go on the camera (nikon D90) the option i need to go (i forgot the name) i just cant even click on it. it says i cant change that options with my configuration. do u have any idea how can i "fix" it?

  • Use M-A-S-P on the Vari-Program dial instead of automatic modes. Most of flash functions are disabled in automatic modes (i.e. Auto, Portrait, Landscape, etc.).

  • hey i have one speedlight SB-600. i think the man who sold me, told me is possible use it with infrared, is it possible? if it is possible, tell me how plz

  • Perhaps read your user's manual? It will take a whole book to explain it to you.

  • Ive had this flash for a while now and it has worked w/o problems but when I recieved a used link delights brand sync cord the light fires off right after the photo is taken(doesnt show in the image at all)... Is this bc of a setting or a bad cord?

  • We have no idea, it sounds like a shadowy and fragile product.

  • I followed the above video to the end. Now, how do I get my speedlight screen to look like it did before I did this video, please.

  • Sorry but the last sentence did not make any sense.

  • ok, so i just bought this and tried it on my d90. the zooming thing...it's not doing it. no matter what focal lenght i shoot it the number displayed on the flass is 14mm. am i doing something wrong? and when i press the zoom button on the flash nothing happens...i'm starting to think there's something wrong with it...

  • That is what happens if you do not read your SB-600 user's manual. Your answer is on page 41.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 i had previoulsy read it before trying it out but i've re-read it. theoritically speaking i need to cancel the power zoom by pressing the zoom button until the M disappears, correct? problem is that when i press the zoom button, nothing happens.

  • Uhm, no, if your SB-600 is fixed at 14mm, you have to slide the wide angle adapter back into the flash head. Then you will have normal zooming range.. There is no 14mm in SB-600's normal range. Auto zoom is where the SB-600 zooms in and out accordingly with your zoom lens' selected focal length. To disable auto zoom, you have to go into the Custom Settings Menus (CSM) to turn it off.

  • Sorry I'm new in photography and I have the SB600. Been using it on auto all this while... I don't get the settings you just did, can you explain please?

    Thanks

  • Read your SB-600 user's manual.

  • i know with the Nikon SB-800 and SB-900 you can control the power ie 1/1, 1/64 and 1/128 etc. but can you set and control the amount of power for the SB-600 when using the Nikon's CLS?

  • Yep.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87

how does it work? when i set the flash and the camera ready for CLS. i can only adjust the zoom on the flashgun.

  • When the SB-600 is enabled for CLS, you control it either via the master flash or commander or via the camera's menus.

  • Does this have a built-in reflector card?

  • The video does not show the built-in reflector because it is not built-in. Only SB-800 and SB-900 have it.

  • I have a problem with my Nikon Speedlight SB-600, everytime i charge the batteries (Varta rechargeable 1.2V 2100mAh) when i turn the flash ON it just fires full power by itself every few seconds. What am i doing wrong? Is it the batteries?

  • Yup, the problem is the batteries. Throw them away and use higher quality rechargeable batteries by Duracell or Energizer. Cheap rechargeable batteries are not safe to use in electronics that uses a lot of battery power.

  • you know the red sensors in the front..the ones that helps with af. the infrared ones...

  • Use Single Point AF, move the AF point to the center, and set the focusing drive for AF-S (not AF-C or M). That should do the trick.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87

    tnk u a lot...

  • i have a problem, and i dont know how what it has gone bad.

its seems that my flash- doens't uses the sensors any more.. any idea? am i doing something wrong or ?

  • We cannot help because your comment lacks any information. Please be specific.

  • Will the SB-600 work in manual mode off camera (with wireless trigger attached). Is there a setting to keep in from sleeping? Thank you.

  • When using the SB-600 as a remote flash, only iTTL and M (manual) are available, so, yes. Simply disable Standby mode by setting it for - - - - -.

  • Hello, i own a nikon d90, i'm about to buy a sb 600, and want to know what do i need to "trigger" the flash without having it attached to the camera. Thanks.

  • Nothing. The trigger is already built-in in the D90.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87

Thank you, one more thing, if i just want the sb600 to flash and not the built-in flash, then i need the nikon sc-28 cord or any other kind of trigger, right? Thanks again. Great reviews by the way!

  • The SC-28 and SC-29 are off-camera iTTL cord, which does not make it a wireless solution. In order to trigger the SB-600 wirelessly without having the onboard flash to throw light at your subject, simply slide in Nikon SG-3IR panel in front of the onboard flash. It will block the incoming flash but will still trigger the SB-600 wirelessly.

  • Likwi, how about ittl wireless? Is it possible?

  • As a remote flash, yes. You will need another unit (SB-700, SB-800, SB-900, or SU-800 Commander) to trigger the SB-600 wirelessly. Also, if your camera has built-in Commander Mode then yes, it is possible.

  • does it work wireless with a D3000?

  • No, you will need an external unit (i.e. SB-700, SB-800, SB-900, or SU-800) to trigger the SB-600 wirelessly.

  • is it mean that sb600 cant be trigger even by remote trigger?

  • Please be specific. What camera are you using? What "remote" trigger?

  • hello. can i use sb 600 wireless to my nikon d5000 camera? if not, what can i do to make it possible?! thank you so much!

  • Sorry, nope. You can use either SU-800 Commander, SB-700, SB-800, or SB-900 speedlight as Master flash to trigger the SB-600 wirelessly.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Can you use the SB-600 as Commander to trigger SB-900? Tnx

  • Not exactly, yes. The SB-600 does not have built-in commander but the SB-900 can be set for SU-4 (where it fires when picking up signal from SB-600 as it fires). SU-4 does not work like CLS where you have to manually adjust the settings on the SB-900, not from the SB-600.

  • i got d5000. and i know thatyou cant disble the sb 600 once its attached. Whenever you do, on and off for your speedlight, will it destroy your sb 600 or the camera itself or vise versa?! thank you

  • None of the above. It will work just fine.

  • @MrKorean30

taking the speedlight off will not damage the flash or your camera as i know :)

  • I have a D5000 with SB-600. When the speedlight its attached, I cannot choose whether use the flash or not. I'm forced to turn off the speedlight unit everytime I want to shoot without flash (this doesn't look healthy to the flash unit), I cannot disable just like the popup flash. I know it's possible so assign FN button to disable the flash regardless the option selected on the dial but this works only in more expesive cameras like the D300s. Do you have any clue how can I disable it?

  • Unfortunately, it is not possible to temporarily disable the external flash for certain shots.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 If the speedlight is attached to the camera, regardless the dial mode (except auto no-flash), it will fire. This is clearly a fault from Nikon, they MUST fix this with a FW update. I don't see why I'm forced to use the flash. I'm not an electronic specialist to tell thats not good to the flash unit get turn on/off everytime. I think I'm lost since Nikon has forsaken entry level DSLR customers and probably will never release a FW update to fix this. I'm disappointed.

  • Oh, stop complaining. You are the one who bought D5000 without doing any further researching first.

  • Hi guys.. I have a D3000 and an SB-600 and besides the SU-800 commander what other third party units can we use for wireless remote?

  • Pocketwizard is still working on a new product that is compatible with SB-600 (current models requires PC sync terminal, which SB-600 lacks). We do not know when it is due but guarantees it will be much more expensive than the SU-800 alone.

As for any other triggers that is not by Pocketwizard (Chinese E-Bay crap), we do not recommend it. They can cause a damage to the SB-600 and / or D3000 that is not covered by Nikon warranty. Stick to Pocketwizard for third party flash triggers.

  • Thanks appreciated this very much and certainly Miles, Coltrane, Evans et al, in accompaniment was simply a pleasure.

  • ive got a nikon D500 and i cant decide wat to get a SB400 or SB600...can u help me out??

    thanks

  • Sorry, we can not give out recommendations because it is your decision. All we can say is this: SB-600 offers MUCH more useful features than SB-400.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 okay thank u so much :)

  • Hi!

I'm using a Nikon D200 and a Nikon D90. Would this work wirelessly with them with no remote?

  • Yes, by using built-in flash as the commander.

  • Hey guys. i'm using nikon d5000. can i do wirelessly remote flash this Nikon SB-600 without any remote?

  • Nope.

You would need either SU-800 Commander to trigger SB-600 wirelessly or buy SB-800 or SB-900 instead then set for SU-4 Mode. SU-4 Mode will fire the flash when your built-in flash goes off.

  • One question, i plan on using an external flash for my D60. And i've decided to get this model. The reason i decided to is because my D60 built-in flash was busted. Its a long story but basically, i cant use my flash. It makes this "click" sound to pop-up but doesnt since it was broken. But the camera works perfectly. My question now is, would i still be able to use this perfectly (speedlight unit) without my built-in flash working or what?

  • Yes, you can use a SB-600 as the only flash. However, you would have to give up Green Camera Auto and any other Vari-Flexible Program modes. It will work in M-A-S-P modes only where the built-in flash will not open by itself.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 I barely use those modes since a friend of mine who got me into photography taught me using MASP modes only. And most of the time, i use M mode all the time. This is really good news for me! Oh and another thing, is this better than SB 800? Whats your personal thought on it? And thanks for the answer =]

  • Then looks you're already set to go.

Actually, a couple differences. SB-800 is more powerful, faster recycling, built-in bounce card, ability to switch to optical or remote slave (even if the camera doesn't support Nikon Creative Lighting System), ability to plug in a Pocketwizard unit, ability to plug in a battery pack, and comes with a diffuse dome (which SB-600 doesn't).

The SB-600 is in a class of its own.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Ohhhhkay, you got me a bit lost there lol. Im just learning everything there is to know at speedlights. Faster Recycling and bounce card? But yeah, for a newbie like me, i think starting with SB-600 is a good start.

  • Oh, well, you're the one who asked. :)

Faster recycling as in when firing a flash, it gets the power backed up to fire the next flash in no time. It is noticeable when using higher flash power, barely noticeable at lower flash power.

Bounce card adds light to your subject's eyes when doing bounce flash (indoors only).

  • I wanna ask something...

can you do commander mode *wireless*

with the SB600 cause i wanna get a speedlight that can tilt and has wireless capabilites..

    thank you

  • No, Commander Mode (Master) is unavailable on the SB-600; slave (Remote) mode only. If your camera has built-in commander then it is possible.

Only SB-800 and SB-900 have built-in Commander Mode.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 i have nikon d3000. I was wondering if the sb600 would work well with it or would i need a more advance dlsr

  • No, it will not work at all unless you:

    1) Get a SB-800 or SB-900 and switch to SU-4 Mode. It fires when your D3000's built-in flash pops.

    2) Get a SU-800 Commander to trigger the SB-600 wirelessly.

    3) Get a Nikon SC-29 Off-Camera iTTL Cord (it is a wired setup, not wireless).

That is completely unnecessary to upgrade to another camera when you happen to have a camera that is still in a good working order.

  • Great video. Thanks.

  • thanks ;)

  • sorry if i sound really noobish, but i just want to know if the sb-600 is compatible with the d5000.

  • Please do not disable the video annotations because it said it is compatible with all digital SLR's at the beginning of the video.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Even the D1/D100?

  • Yes, the SB-600 supports DTTL (older generation of iTTL).

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Thank you! I am familiar with i-ttl.... what does the d stand for in d-ttl? THanks for your videos!

  • DTTL stands for Digital Through The Lens where the SB-600 pick up the distance information from lenses that are equipped with distance information CPU contacts (on the mount).

iTTL stands for Intelligent Through The Lens, just a minor update to DTTL.

  • @russellskates I have a D5000 and a SB-600. It works perfectly. You won't be disappointed.

  • @maultreehill did it work wirelessly to your camera? thank you

  • Nope, D5000 lacks built-in Commander Mode.

  • im buying one to use with my D5000

  • hi dont know why u thought it was for football its for kayaking/canoe slalom evnts, can u recommend any cheap intro flashguns for my d100 please

  • According to your first comment, "outdoor sport", it could be anything.

SB-600 is your best bet if you can find a used one.

We would not recommend the SB-400 (much cheaper) because you won't be able to control the flash's modes and flash value compensation due to D100's old age. The D100 does not offer menu options to control external flash unit.

    Good luck.

  • hi ive a d100 and im after a cheap flash for outdoor sport can anyone recommend a cheap easy to use flash ie jesopps etc im a total beginner

  • Uhm, two things. First, most sports events do not allow use of a flash in any condition because it could distract the players. Second, if you are shooting from the stadium seats, you won't be able to light up the whole stadium with a flash. The furthest you could light up at full power is about 30 feet. We would suggest you to practice shooting sports without a flash.

  • Lilkiwiguy87- You are the man. I have learned a lot from your vids.

  • This photography thing is amazing and confusing and complicated and expensive! Grrr!

  • Yet you chose it. :)

  • Hi!

What happen if I use it on Manual and fix the zoom on lets say 50 or 85mm, on TTL does the flash automatically compensate for this setting?

I was thinking, I'm using the kitlens 18-105, and usually shoots people (using camera) on 50-70mm. Maybe I can save battery power by fixing the zoom to 50 or 70 so the flash won't zoom back and forth and IT won't have to use more flash output.

    (Sorry for the stupid question.)

  • Yes, TTL automatically compensate the flash value at any focal length on the flash head. It will not use very much battery if you leave it in auto zoom mode.

  • Just got my SB 600 today! Thanks to Liki and his great videos and very practical-to-the-point-advice. Got it 2nd hand with diffuser, previous owner practically never used it haha, still comes with the 1st-day-original disposable batteries haha and still with charge.

Now, must do some reading and testing. I think the full manual control has endless possibilities. I just hope I wouldn't get the bug and buy more flash units.

  • good video!.can you please show a video for the d60 set up for the sb600??? thanks!

  • *chuckles* Uhm, you just slide the SB-600 on, turn it on, done.

  • no.i mean does the wireless work on d60???? thanks!

  • Oh, no, sorry. You would need an external unit such as SU-800, SB-800, or SB-900 in order to trigger the SB-600 wirelessly. The D60 lacks internal commander mode.

  • Does the SB-600 works on Nikon D3000?

(I think it does but i want to be sure.)

  • Yep.

  • @RobinMoviesOffical ut doesnt work with the cls

  • So appreciate this video... that may have convinced me to purchase this flash. I know there are some concerns about it's wireless capability, but right now that's not my aim... I'm hands on so this seems right up my alley for the time being. Thanks for sharing

  • best music choice for "product demonstration" ever

  • I Have the D5000 and know that it doesn't the command mode thing but is there a way getting something which will make it wireless activated.

Im sorry if that made no sense.

  • Yes, by buying a Nikon SU-800 Commander, Nikon SB-800 (as Master flash), or Nikon SB-900 (as Master flash).

  • Does it work for a D3000? lol sorry stupid question

  • Yup.

  • your good and kind. thanks for posting and answering all the question.

to all viewers who have some some question, try to back read some pages and you'll get your answers.

  • *chuckles* Most of our subscribers find it too much work going into the archives, unfortunately.

  • Can you use SB 600 on a Nikon D60? Very sorry im a noob.

  • One word answer, yes.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Thanks man! :)

  • is it possible to use the high-speed mode?

  • Yes, only if your camera supports it.

  • I have the D-3000...How do I make the SB-600 wireless with it?

    I am a n00b...

And could you sign my D-3000?

I'm a huge fan of you guys. <3

  • Hah.

Sorry, no, you can not trigger the SB-600 wirelessly with the D3000 due to lack of built-in commander mode. You would need a SU-800 Commander, SB-800, or SB-900 as the commander to trigger your SB-600 wirelessly.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Thanks. =D

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 what about using a catus trigger????

  • Sorry, we don't have any experience with Chinese knock-off Ebay flash triggers, so, we wouldn't advise using it. Take a look at Pocketwizards just to be on the safe side.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 for $40, try the Cactus Wireless Flash Trigger Set V4.

  • $40 and be on the risk of frying the circuits in our flash? No thanks.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 I'm not asking anyone to :fry:" anything. The reviews are not that grim, they are actually quite good. There are discussion boards with plenty of information, I haven't read any that suggest what you mention, could you show me were you got that info???

  • Didn't get the information off the internet because it happened to several of our friends.

  • Hello! Do you know how to get the SB-600 to fire while using a reversed lens? I can't get it to fire wireless when I'm using my 50mm. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • When the lens is reversed, the contacts on the lens are being separated and your camera have no idea what is in the front of it. To override that, set the AF motor drive for M (manual) and set the exposure mode for M (manual, the "M" of M-A-S-P) then fire away. You might get inaccurate iTTL but you can switch the flash to M (manual) and manually adjust the flash value until you get the results that you wanted.

  • Thanks, I'll try that!

  • In the description, what does it mean when you put 'external unit' and or 'built-in flash'?

I have a d60 and am thinking of purchasing the sb-600

  • D60 lacks built-in Commander Mode for wireless flash system, which requires an external unit (another SB-800, SB-900, or SU-800 Commander) to trigger the SB-600 wirelessly.

  • Oh okay, thanks for clearing that up for me!

  • If you want to save money, you can look at SC-17, SC-28, or SC-29 off-camera iTTL cord but you will be limited to arm-length and no wireless capability.

  • Hm, I'll look into that. Thanks for the information. You've been of great help!

  • for wireless flashing: does the built-in flash have to fire aswell to work as a master for the sb600? or does in work somehow different.....? i fear to avoid using the built in flash i'd have to buy the expensive ir or radio adapters, right?

  • Well, cannot help with you there because you left the name of your camera out.

Wireless flash capability is possible only if your camera supports Nikon Creative Lighting System using the built-in pop-up flash as a Commander (similar to Master) to trigger the SB-600 wirelessly.

If your camera supports it and you don't want to "use" the built-in pop-up flash, simply buy a Nikon SG-3IR and slide it in. It will block the flash from reaching your subject but continues triggering the SB-600.

  • I have a D90... can I shoot wireless with this flash?

  • Yup.

  • Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!!!!!

  • Does the focus light come out from the external flash or the incamera?

  • If the SB-600 is mounted on the camera's hot shoe, yes.

If the SB-600 is NOT mounted on the camera's hot shoe, no, but the camera's built-in AF illuminator will light up.

  • I know this isn't some kind of a help forum but I think I have 2 problems with my SB600. 1) batteries get drained way too fast. example: i used the canon 580 once and i could get through a whole day of light to medium shooting with only 2 battery sets. With the SB600 i get only like 1,5 to 2 hours before they die. 2) when i shoot the sb600 I sometimes smell burning plastic and the front lens is melting a little from the inside. I don't' think this is normal. Please help. Thanks in advance.

  • It is because you're firing your SB-600 at the maximum power.

Please watch the SB-900 Overheating Explanation & Solution video series to learn more how to prevent your flash from draining the batteries (do not worry if it's not a SB-900).

Burning smell is from the heated interiors from firing at maximum power. Reducing the power, use larger apertures, higher ISO sensitivities, primary batteries, and allow the flash to rest and recycle will not result in burning smell.

  • does it have slave mode?

  • Optical slave? No.

Wireless slave? Yes but only with SU-800, SB-800, SB-900, or built-in pop-up flash on CLS-compatible camera models. Look in the video description to see if your camera have it or not.

  • Your reviews are as classy as the equipment. Thanks

  • Does the difusser have to be down when using the nikon gels

  • Yes, or use painter's masking tape to hold it.
