  • unrealistic attack = unrealistic defense

  • he looks like van damme

  • i live in singapore and i've never been attacked before . but i train goju ryu just in case i get attacked . just like the singapore police force says , low crime doesnt mean no crime

  • I was attacked last week with a makeshift shank, starting Karate tonight, no little fool is gonna take me down like that lol!

  • @charlysays04 yhh im in the same situation but someone try to rob my friend and they aint robbing me

  • @charlysays04 I predict you will end up looking for trouble in no time at all, and will get yourself hurt or killed.

  • @kenfo0 No chance sir, not the type of person that enjoys violence at all, just made me realise how ill equipped i was to deal with a bad situation.

  • @charlysays04 I mean you no ill will. it is simply a fact that people who "take karate" because "they ain't robbin me" OFTEN put THEMSELVES in harms way, purposefully or not. Any reputable instructor should often state "going home in one pc/alive is the goal....don't put yourself into dangerous situations where you have to "fight your way out....this is last resort stuff, not a goal.". If they don't, they are BADLY misleading you. Good luck.

  • To all who think knife defense is not effective I strongly disagree. The keys are confidence, no hesitation, fierceness, "variety of drills", and sparring. Get your friends, associates, and dojo mates to attack you without restriction any way they can. I bet $20 to $50 bucks that they can't deliver a fatal blow. It really motivates them to do their best. Also tease and frustrate them so they will give it there all. Pls. provide intelligent responses only.

  • @MrWaterfighter I absoultely agree witchu, the more ur in contact with sumthin the less u fear it

  • @Shaddydad : I've never been attack by a knife before; but I have been attacked by a guy with a bat and one with a tire iron (I think); on seperate occassions. I beat both of them easily because my familiarity with weapon defense. It also helped that niether one of the guys were martial artist and came strait at me. I was scared but the fear goes away when you start thinking about technique and remaining confident in your skill. Believing in yourself counts alot.

  • @MrWater stop egging people on to get themselves maimed or killed. You can "strongly disagree" all you want. Anyone who knows anything knows, guy attacks with a knife, you are going to get cut. It is just a matter of how badly. People need to avoid fighting if at all possible. This means not looking for trouble (you will find trouble you can't handle) and being aware of your surroundings and leaving unsafe surroundings. These techniques are last ditch efforts, not "ima ween uh nife fite".

  • @kenfo0 - anytime you are forced to fight against a weapon empty handed is a "last ditch effort", that still doesn't mean you don't practice countering, or get on the ("you gonna get cut") trip. Just because a guy has a knife doesn't mean he's gona win. I grew up in violent streets of Detroit, seen alot of sh#t, had a few scraps myself. Guys got beat down using a knife or other objects, against unarmed opponents on many occassions. Confidence, ability, skill, experience all make a difference.

  • @MrWaterfighter Uh, no. These vids PRETEND that one is going to be successful defending against a knife attack and that you are not going to get cut. I've taught hand to hand combat, and I assure you if I attack you with a knife, you are getting cut badly, and will likely need surgery if you survive. Might you survive or even win? Anything is possible. It is a matter of odds. The odds of defending against a knife attack w/o getting cut are about zero. Vids need to make reality clear.

  • @kenfo0 - give the youtube community some credit; I think we all know these are demonstrations. Every situation is unique, and it seriously depends on the level of skill and brutality of the knife attacker. I respect your view but think it leans to far to the negative. I also give credit to your combat skills; most of the responded to this post are Martial Artist from novice to master. Each of our experiences shape our opinion. I also believe we all understand the lethality of the subject.

  • @MrWaterfighter You MUST be joking. Uh, no again. The "YT Community" is not very bright at all, and believes any nonsense that is on tv or found on google. My "views" are based in the real world, not a fake tough guy attitude bought from a McDojo. Your initial post was an over the top "ifn yah gest git mad nobuddy could hert ya.". Instead of being attacked with a fake knife and yelling "I win!", talk to ER surgeons and cops about knife attacks...severed arteries, tendons, muscles, etc.

  • @kenfo0 - Im retired Military, and worked 9 years in state corrections and probation; their isn't anything in Hell you can teach me. Their is no changing a persons outlook or opinion. thanks for the responses this subject is done.

  • @MrWaterfighter LOL. Yeah, ok fake tough guy. "There" is no teaching someone proper English either, even though they teach it through the first 12 YEARS of public education. Go figure, kid. Maybe you can wait a week, then come back and pretend you got mugged by 10 Israeli Commandos with knives, but your "training" allowed you to give them a good thrashing! WHEW! That just made my day. Take care.

  • @GHOST1SRR Uh, I believe that pretty much any knife defense technique can get you killed if you don't pull it off. The way I see it, if you run into a guy with a knife or a gun and you're not pretty damned sure that they're gonna kill you no matter what you do... just give 'em your damn wallet. $100, a couple plastic credit cards and your drivers license isn't worth your life.

  • Good stuff, although incredibly difficult to pull off full speed. I still think Filipino's have some of the based defenses against knives, swords, sticks, etc.

    Respect

  • Sensei Max, where is your dojo? i feel we should connect more goju ryu dojos, feel free to message me. Ours is in wokingham.

  • @darroner Hi there we are based in Broseley Shropshire

  • That's what i like to see Getting in there just that little snap flick pop

    whatever.

    peace

  • @GHOST1SRR When you learn a thing or two about headbutts you realize that the shorter your are the better cause you can come up with the crown of your skull with positively devastating angles. Another thing is a smaller person is much harder to his making them fast and manuverable. Making it easy for them to attack the groin and knees of a bigger person. In a fight height and weight are not what matter, it's how you use your tools. Some of the smaller people are also the most dangerous.

  • The first technique is a lot like some of the Dog Brothers Martial Arts knife defense. The head butt disrupts the attack so he doesn't have time for another thrust and doesn't allow him to throw the left hand. The blocking arm would be the right arm instead of the left. The crossing arms stops from slices across the stomach.

  • My favourite technique for forward lunge knife attacks is the "step outside / arm-break forward elbow" from Shisochin kata.

  • heh, Mr. Miyagi blocks a spear in a similar manner in KK2

  • Traditional Goju-Ryu practioners develope remarkably hard forearms and the blocks alone can do substantial damage to an attacking limb.

  • Wouldn't you turn your feet to the side block catch, then elbow to the side of the head. I don't like that cross shape block

  • What is up with the head butt?

  • gotta say im not a fan of blocking a knife in that way from the first technique.always feel if the guy is going beserk and pulls the knife away hes gonna slice your arms...i know the theory is that he wont get the chance but thats a fairly big risk with a knife. i prefer the block/smash and grab approach to that attack but hey everyone is different. just a personal preference.

  • must say i agree with you, i would always teach my students the same block only you turn you arms inwards so your wrists are facing each other. that way if the guy does pull theblade back he only cuts skin and bone rather than veins and tendens.

  • @Dravensdmf

Listen to what the guy says in the beginning of the film.

  • @Dravensdmf Me too mate, I wouldn't rely on that cross shape no way. Maybe its the way I've been taught !

  • kata were created to allow someone alone to train and keep the good tehcnique and a good body ..

kata derive from the real technique called kaisai. in a kata you ve got some possible mouvement from a principal technique

you find kaisia in kuryu kata such as saifa seisan senyunchin seipai..

    look shorei kan974 on youtube

  • nice video

  • Damn, that old dude's sharp.

  • we used to use magic markers instead of fake knives. was a very effective way to teach us how to get out of the way.

  • I suggest you read the online text by don pentacost, while I don't agree with everything don says, his comments on the martial arts are worth reflecting on. Personally, I regard pattern/technique training is for an ordered and predictable context (eg your dojo) it does not develop the ability to adapt under the complex reality of the street. The techniques you illustrate could potentially get someone killed if applied in a real situation.

  • kata trained properly is all youll ever need for the street, the principles within the kata are the root of real fighting, each and every technique is designed to cause serious injury, there not for sparring, just life or death situations, never judge a book by its cover, take a look inside, dont flick through the pages, read each chapter, and analise what youve learnt, question what you havent learnt, if it still doesnt make sense, get another book, ignorance gets you killed in a real situation.

  • I have a theory on Kata. Kata represents the "ideal Form" of combat. I say "ideal" cause combat is ugly, and seldom goes according to plan. But by repeatedly practicing the perfect ideal of combat, you establish the ideal as your muscle memory. This opens one up to adaptation, which is the "art" in martial "arts."

  • i think you're right, the more perfect your practice is, the more "perfect" your execution will automatically be, without you having to concentrate on it. as he said, they use these to sharpen karate, not literally as knife defenses.

  • thank you for your comments, i am glad that someone actually understood what i was pointing out about lifting awareness and sharpening the karate.

  • many filipino martial art practitioners use knife training for the same reason. nobody is too worried about a hand coming at them, make it a blade and things get interesting.

  • Thank you for your comments and support. our club has many different ways of training, from a practical sence we had a great instructor Keith Pace who sadly passed away last year, he was a direct student of Gary Spiers. And the (old boy) is 60 years old and the ex R.S.M from the army physical training corps..and you are right you wouldnt turn your back on him for 100 yards. Moral of the story (Never judge a sausage by thr skin).

  • why do people slag off these kind of videos. Karate is a life study and cannot dedicate itself to one area. The marker pen comment is bang on, i've done it and it's scary. This is one of many training sessions I presume this club does covering many areas. Statistacally, the 'old boy' (sorry mate!) in the green belt is more likely to be roughed up / pushed or punched than stabbed and won't that attacker get a surprise! He's bloody sharp! Police use sticks, Mace, wear stab vests, and aren't safe.

  • damn it man

people have two hands and they use them in a fight. why train like you are fighting the one armed man. what a waist of time, life is to short and has to much value

  • do people use both hands to stab , the stab comming in needs to be dealt with ,it`s priority, then you attack. anyway there are no blocks in karate, so the trap was also doubled as a strike.

  • give a 12 year old a marking pen and just let them flail it at you, none of you techniques will work.

  • that is so funny cause its true.

  • goju ryu is a solid style, if trained properly, can be very effective even against knives, this video shows basic goju ryu techniques executed very well,

  • One suggestion, try your techniques on someone who trains in kali. The experience will give you some perspective on the effectiveness of your techniques.

  • thanks for your comments i have trainined with people in kali and it was very good. this video was shot one evening at short notice and we showed a variety of subjects but just kept everything short and simlpe, better stuff will follow.

  • I train in knife fighting. And not to disrespect Karate at all in any way. But a lot of Instructors always do the false attack the thrusting of the knife to the stomach. An expert knife fighting is going to not do that. His knife is going to retract quick like a fast jab.

  • I have done Self defence all my life, allways get your body out of the way, of the Blade.

  • alright moving out the way but what when it just keeps comming @ you , you have to deal with quickly & ruthlessley.

  • karate can in evolve anything. what we do in Kata or class may not have somethings in it but it does not meant is not there. you should add on to movements to make them easier or more efficient

  • Traditional karate that includes headbutting, thats great.

Also the allowance of varriance for in the moment flow and personal preference.

    This guy teaches in England?

  • yes our club is based in shropshire england. thnks for your comments.
