  • tight was the word I was about to use - swindons finest - great band - check out their dukes of stratospear psychadelic pastiche - it will improve your life

  • No way this is a Rita Coolidge cover.

  • いいね!

  • How ahead of their time were these boys from Swindon?? :-)_

  • Terry Chambers was still there!

    Thanks for posting.

  • they are a grand band, but they're under-rated b/c they didn't tour. Too bad, but check AP's record label (APE) lots of good up-n-comers

  • 32 years later, and this track is still just as crisp and fresh! (Not that I was around to hear it when it was new, mind you, but I think it sounds far less dated than many of the big hit-makers of 1978).

  • such an underated band......awesome workings

  • XTC - one of the most under-rated bands in British music history. Fantastic songs and lyrics.

  • another epic t.v. moment from XTC. i love the vicious swipe andy makes at the start at uber-hippy/presenter, 'whispering" bob harris! a hoot! 20 out of 10!!!

  • "Impaled on your hair, what do you do do do ta me?" Ha, love this song.

  • I'd say it sounds like a cross between "This Year's Model" and Joe Jackson. Everyone was doing the dub/reggae backbeat thing then, but the Police weren't quite as jerky in their execution.

  • AP says at the beginning "You can pop your acid Spangle in there now, were going to do a Rita Coolidge number.."

Spangles were a popular UK sweet/candy in 60's and 70's, one of the flavours being 'Acid Drop'.

  • This song is very "This Year's Model". I dig it

  • Reminds me of the Police a little bit.

  • or maybe the Police reminds you of XTC ;)

  • what does he say right at beginning??

  • "In Pop Your Arts it's hfjsadkljbrkleg and now we're going to do a Rita Coolidge number for you--this is 'Statue of Liberty.'"

  • What a tight and fantastic band....woo hoo

  • Ah man, I haven't thought about this song in years.

  • Andy Partridge never got the recognition he deserved as a song writher so far ahead of his time

  • "we're only making plans for nigel, ooo woooo"

  • Love everything about this.

  • fuckin brilliant record!!!

  • very niceee.

  • Freaking amazing... probably the best band in the world 1982-1989... this early stuff shows a brilliand band in progress.

  • Saw them twice at Rafters club in Manchester in 1978.Great live band .Great band all round!

  • haha, hes using the Ramones' drumset

  • i can't say how much i adore this. :)

  • 4shur

  • Love it, just love it.

  • Partridge, Moulding and Andrews, what a band!

  • You forgot to mention Terry Chambers.

  • He's dead to us. jk

  • Oh christ, oh christ. The album (and the single) version of this is one of the greatest songs by XTC, but this really does everything even better. 5/5

  • ....hard to believe this was banned by the BBC for the line "sail beneath your skirt"(?) ....

  • some song by marc bolan was banned by bbc because he said lift up your skirt and fly

  • "In early 1967 (after changing his name again to Marc Bolan), he joined the protopunk band John's Children, which achieved some success as a live band but sold few records. A John's Children single written by Marc Bolan called "Desdemona" was banned by the BBC for its line "lift up your skirt and fly"." (wiki) how wierd is that

  • pier23ca u are a moron, u have no idea what that guy went through! go wank off 2 god u gayboy.x

  • You amuse.

Your anger reveals your deep-seated homoerotic desires.

  • This is just a kick ass tight band. I Love Barry's organ stabs. Not too much into him and Andy's "Monstrance" album..but the first 2 XTC albums are killer...as well as everything from XTC Mach 2+

  • hey, i can relate to the very real phenomena of stage fright coming upon you late in life. i experienced the same thing, at almost the same age it gripped andy. stage fright or not, i'm totally in love with him.

  • amazing band

  • poo poo !!

  • iheard andy partridge used to get horrible stage fright. that's why they stopped playing live all together. hard to really believe that judging by how comfortable he seems on stage here. probably before all the acid he started taking.

  • Actually, the stage fright kicked in after he went OFF the drugs: according to an XTC bio, he was addicted to valium... until his then-wife tossed his stash.

  • consider yourself lucky you have never had to come off drugs -idiot.

  • It's not so strange that you would sign your post.

That bit after the dash says all need saying about you.

  • I apologise for calling you an idiot - but I stand by what I said.

  • I heard? horrible stage fright? As opposed to "nice" stage fright? Acid? Have a look at XTC on Wikipedia for the full story, you brain donor.

  • I was at this concert and haven't seen it since it was first shown on TV back in 1977! We didn't have a video recorder back then :(

campfreddie, a big thankyou for reviving memories of a great concert. The video finishes before the applause when you can hear me whistling my appreciation :)

  • Damn - Andy was kinda cute in those days.

  • Great band. These Barry Andrews-era singles were absolutely brilliant. I think I even like them better than the later years, the song were shorter and snappier.

  • - I did`nt know Boris Johnson could sing.

  • I can't think of any band that it would make me happier to see reform and headline Glastonbury.

  • i agree mate.... only Glastonbury is shite now.

  • You're absolutely right. This year was poor.

  • XTC started off as a good punk band, then they started making proper music and became the best band ever

  • What a pompous arsehole you are.

  • hahahahahaha

  • great band unique style of punk!

  • Great band' loved the off kilter discordant style they had.

  • ....hard to believe this was banned by the BBC for the line "sail beneath your skirt"(?) ....

  • OMG. I just died & went to heaven. Fan-f*****g-tastic

  • i used to cover this song with my college band in the mid 80's. imagine my delight to find this video posted. great song by a really great band.

  • The first thing I remember listening to on John Peel was the first Xtc session which I taped on my wee mono recorder. I saw a band last week called The Magnificents who were totally a rip off of early White Music era Xtc.

  • Top band! did a gig with 'em once, they were cool and Andy borrowed our fuzzbox! Loved the Dukes of Stratosphear stuff too

  • what a fucking song!!!! best band in the world

  • andy was so cute then.... :)

  • you can see in the 2nd verse that he's filled with so much excitment and passion he can barley spit out the lyrics

    brilliant :D

  • bloody brilliant

  • there fuckin brilliant! gwooooooooooon

  • IHIHIIHIIII LOVE THEM!

  • ah.. andy was so cute than... :) and colin too....

  • one of the best live band ever, whether with barry andrews or dave gregory ( i prefer them with dave gregory)...too bad they stopped performing at such an early stage in their career...Andy Partridge is a genius, although i bet he still regrets not writing Making plans for Nigel himself :-)

    whatever...THIS IS POP!

  • u know they hated being on stage and only quit after a nervous breakdown?

  • know it...somewhere here in the youtube there's should be live footage of andy leaving the stage during his last performance...actually something real quiet

  • they didnt hate being on stage, it became too much for them- hence the breakdown.

  • I can't believe how weird looking Andy Partridge got, and within only a few short years.

  • The lads are shit hot as usual !! Magic

  • OMG, I remember watching this 28 years ago - and it's still bloody marvellous!!

  • This is a faster than the studio version...and I like it.

  • nice keys solo- bettr than th record version :)

  • Thank you! All this OGWT footage is a revelation to us Yanks.

  • yeah.

  • ...colin's wearing the same shirt again. o_O this is pop, staute of liberty and now this one.

  • great silky picture quality. excellent. thanks.
