I made an enourmous railway, I made a loop of track with a switch with the minecart and powered minecart on it. I load about 6 coal then throw the switch and get in the empty minecart. I use minecarts on a single track to the side as brakes so the minecart doesn't run away on the engine, it the best way to make a railway because animals cant stop it like other systems like powered rails

They have to be 3 or more minecarts, or else it won't be able to go up hills. The powered minecart also has to be in the back.

HA! kinda useless, and hard, since u have to face the direction, u have to start the thing then quickly run to get in the minecart, guys just use the powered rails this kinda thing is good for multiplayer, so one person can carry all this and be like a train conductor

@FFFre4k It still works. Minecart boosters broke, but the powered minecart train method is fine and dandy.

If you're looking for speed though, definitely go with powered tracks. Much easier, although takes a lot of resources.

@EffYouImADragon Actually, boosters are not working anymore because they are noncollideable. This means that powered minecart cant push normal minecart around. I have experienced that. But i might be wrong.

I want to put rails down to my mine which is secluded from my home but the problem is i cant find enough iron!!! Where did you find all the iron for your rails? Ive only had ebough for a few.

@cal352 Caves, n00b. Shaft mining is only good for cobblestone and coal... you'll only run into a couple iron here or there. Instead, dig a staircase down into the ground... sooner or later, you'll run into a cave system. That's where all the good stuff is. You'll get more coal than you know what to do with, and loads of iron. Deeper, you'll run into lapis, redstone, and *gasp* diamonds. Just make sure you bring an iron pick and LOTS of torches.

@cal352 See how my mine leads to a giant room? That's at layer 6(?), where bedrock doesn't spawn. I then create branched rooms from there. You run into a bit of redstone, as well as the occasional iron and diamond. Coal isn't too big of a problem that you should have to mind solely for that.

@cal352 What he said, that and if you ever find an occasional collection of water pools or a huge cave like open area, theres bound to be iron and even some Lapis Lazuli (Which is useless unless you want a blue dye) i find tons and tons of iron, more so than i used to when i started what, 3 weeks ago, just go into big underground cave-like rooms, you'll see what i mean, but you'll have to dig too :D Good Luck

@MrLightMatter Probably not. It's very slow and would be hard to implement. You should consider using booster carts (google it) or wait until Beta 1.5, supposedly coming out in April, for powered rails.

If it's going right:

You're going to want to destroy the Powered minecart and put it in front of the Empty one.

I prefer powered mine carts too boasters, i worked it out and it uses WAY less iron than boosters since you only need one. Yes it uses up coal, but the alternative is using up IRON, or you could push the carts yourself.
