  • Can u believe people actually prefer the william shatner version?!

  • yes, hehe. I do, though I feel guilty about it. I really like both versions and feel that I should prefer this, but in the other one I can hear the words more clearly.

  • i wonder if jarvis ever listened to any bowie?

  • fuckin' great classic pop song

  • Yeah, what's with blanking out "screw"? I mean, they leave that in on the Shatner version. How messed up is that?

  • This vid and disco 2000 were fucking great icons.......

    Bring back those days

  • I love this song it is brilliant what is it about sleeping with common people or getting along with them just wondering?

  • It's about people that are unable to understand what its like to struggle through life because they never had to struggle themselves

  • you know the popes a common man

  • genius indeed....and im 16 again lol

  • Sadie Frost is the girl who wants to sleep with common people like him.

  • a great track

  • I agree!!

  • Hey, this sounds a lot like "Los amantes" from Mecano!!!

  • stupid comment

  • Isn't stupid. Is a comment.

  • Esto si que es hacer música.Grandioso.Wünderbar.Wonderful

  • the lyrics are really good!

  • what spineless do-right blanked out the words "and screw" for fucks sake???

    this fucking country...

  • You're right bro --- you might say this country is "screwed" ... but they'd probably edit that too!

  • Greetings from Finland and quiet Christmas with expectation! Welcome to my site to watch videos on a 40-year period!

  • Pulp is one of the most influencial bands of England's last 20 years. Maybe you need to learn a little more, kiddo.

  • i would say oasis are more influential

    but pulp are grand,

  • I love pulp!!!

  • Amazing vid..i aint seen it for over 10 years...thx for posting it mate...

  • Philistine, hahahha. That always reminds me of Jeff Daniels in the Squid and the Whale, oh man.

  • This is a wonderful song, very nice album too.

  • pulp? One hit wonder??? are you joking?

  • Pulp had loads of fucking stunning tunes.

Its not their fault you're a philistine who hasn't heard any half decent music.

  • woah buddy

  • Only when Shatner sang it.

  • Wasn't a one hit wonder, they had Disco 2000 aswel.

  • what a cluless twat you are

  • I like this band. I guess this album and "this is hardcore" thing is very strong.

Sometimes they sounds really russian music. I can't explain it, but I hear alot of russian in british music.

For example exit music of Radiohead

  • dance and drink and SCREW

  • Youtube has got craper ever since google bought it. 30 second advertisements before videos?!? FUCK OFF

    Also, win song.

  • that's the first thing i've heard that makes sence all day =)

  • in cockers own words: "at school i was a nerdy kid with glasses, bad breath and bad at sport. so i started a band so girls would like me".........

  • Jarvis Cocker looks scrummy :)

  • her dad's loaded. but he couldn't afford her a dentist.

  • Brit-Rock all the way :)

  • Es parecida a la cancion de MECANO "Los Amantes"

  • que grandes son jujjuju

  • The words "and screw" are censored but the fightscenes are ok? How ridiculous!

    Otherwise it is great.

  • There is a version without the fight scene. I don't remember if that one uses screw or not.

  • william shatner's vrsn is hilarious too

  • jarvis seems verry austin powers in this vid lol

  • Quality Tune =) The Good Ole Days LoL

  • I remember me and my mates singing this song down the streets when we were kids how sad lol!!

  • Jarvis really wrote some HUGE lyrics. Even though this was a rather simple song, no wonder it became one of the anthems of a generation.

  • couldnt agree more. all his lyrics are amazing but theres at least one truly knockout line in each song:

"oh youre so funny, and i said yea. but i cant see anyone else smiling here"

"i know you wont believe its true i went with her cos she looks like you"

and that bit in bad cover version where he talks about the cornflakes, cant remember the exact words but its just so brilliant!

  • '...so it started.... there.' :)

  • Fake Plastic Trees, anyone?

  • Yes please

  • which came first?

  • Fake Plastic Trees

  • Who the fuck beeped out "screw" and though that was relevant??? Wow...

  • dummy video.. E-P-I-C song...

  • Jarvis wrote some brilliant lyrics? Jarvis wrote some AMAZING lyrics!

  • what a song :) x

  • Pulp were a great Band! Jarvis writes some brilliant lyrics. I saw loads and loads of bands in the late 80s early 90s Pulp were one of the best bands I ever saw. Their early stuff was better than the late stuff, 'IT' , 'Seperations' ,'Freaks' and ' 'Masters of the universe' were brilliant albums!!!!

  • Teacher from Rushmore.

  • She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge..goustaro..

  • I <3 you falstaffswims x

  • bloody love this song

  • and the common people hate the upper classes especially the noise they make while they're still breathing

  • Comment removed

  • galesbr: You're a fucking loser... I suspect... yes, strongly suspect: you're another of the fucking poor slobs who only IDENTIFY with the rich (who customarily suck cock, though you'll never acknowledge that)... you identify with them, hoping that, by doing so, you'll vicariously participate in their power. You're the working-class guy who speaks out against nationalized health care. You're the idiot blue-collar "patriot" who speaks up for wars against other poor people. YOU FUCKING SUCK.

  • me as well, it's better to go against the grain

  • Can someone please choreograph an awesome Broadway-style dance to this song. It would be too cool.

  • we're common people, we cant even afford off-broadway. better wait until it comes on glee

  • bom mesmo né bixu ?

  • wow tahts right!

  • Woaw. He as a tiny mouth. No?

  • How true........nothing else to do , but dance and drink and screw ! ........... hell yeah , nowt wrong with that is there ?

  • Its about a girl he met, she said to him she wanted to live like common people.

Its about 'cultural slumming' where rich kids end up dressing and acting like the poorer people, and when they get home they are rich again.

If that made sense XD I don't tend to make sense at the min.

LOL at bongo155, you are right!

    .

  • top video this...my lilsis sings it great on karaoke too...go shell...xx

  • Aww!

    LOVE PULP!

  • Extended version is awesome:

    "You will never understand

how it feels to live your life

    with no meaning or control

and with nowhere left to go

You are amazed that they exist

    and they burn so bright

whilst you can only wonder why"

  • how weird was it for me to hear this earlier today [on the radio] for the first time ever. i'd only ever heard the william shatner version. i knew this original version by pulp was out there...but just had'nt heard it . love it!

  • when did this song come out?

  • I use to wish I was a common person, now I don't believe in common people

  • Why did they censor out 'and screw' at 02:30? Stop mucking around with the songs!

  • The dance from 3:05 to 3:27 is awesome. =D

  • Great song. Gotta love the lyrics.

  • ilove it i love it i love it i love it i love it i love it i love it I LOVE IT LOVE IT LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!THE BEST FCIN SONG EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • and by posting on this wall we are continuing the ''common people'' tradition that Jarvis is singing about, as this is something common people do. Still, genious song, one of the best and very touching.

  • don't be too anal about every fart.. just enjoy the song.

  • you may have noticed that I also mentioned ''genious song, one of the best'' which indicates I do enjoy this song :-p

  • super je

  • ubij me

  • jarvis cocker is awsome.

  • very nice

  • One of the best singles ever, superb.

  • Oasis rocked hardest and was most consistent; Blur was most inventive/creative; but Pulp had the best singles w/Common People, Mis-shapes and This Is Hardcore. Don't forget Suede in this discussion, too...

  • "blur vs. pulp vs. oasis who takes it?"

    oasis

  • I had a friend who wanted me to be a common person. I left her.

  • that doesn't even make sense,

she wanted you to be poor?

  • she wanted me to change, to live like normal people. she didn't realise i was different, unchangeable.

well, there are some people in your life who you may consider friends at first, but soon you realise that you have nothing in common, because you yourself ain't common and will never be.

(sometimes living amongst common people can be so hard...)

  • you should've just left it. it looked better.

  • Comment removed

  • This song talks about common people meaning poor people, not normal people, but I understand what you mean. Lots of people try sometimes to make me be a normal person. And then never get it, not because I don't want to, but because I can't... I'm not a common person and I think I'll never be!

  • thumbs up.

  • And who beats your ass?

  • Very low quality what happens with universal, this kind of video sucks

  • classic

  • Now that I'm 20 years old I can finally enjoy the music in this terribly odd video I saw as a kid. Pulp rocks.

  • blur vs pulp vs oasis who takes it?

  • well i prefer pulp, and frankly i think blur's not even in the same league as the other two, but if you go by popularity; definitely oasis

  • 2:57 !!

  • David Bowie Kooks.

  • 2:34 is this an american version?

    he doesn't say shrew

  • A Classic Anti Hipster Anthem

  • Raquel y yo enloqueciamos con esta canción...le subiamos a todo lo que daba y nos alocabamos en el carro...tambien deseabamos a Jarvis con todo nuestro corazón :)

  • I have this on my iPod. Another Pulp favorite.

  • i remember watching an interview with jarvis.. he said he really wanted to do a dance in this video.. but he made it up at the last minute which is y its so bad... bless him it was a gud effort

  • whats the pulp song where he sings about a ufo landing in a field somewhere in england ?

i hope its pulp, its driving us insane trying to remember it !!!!!!!!!!!!!! helpppppp :o)

  • 'e's and wizz', on different class

  • what the hell does that mean ??

  • some of the greatest, pulp rule.

  • q musikinha munitinha...lol..

por acaso curto isto a malhao...eheheh

  • Girl at 1:51 is a treat eh?

My word isn't he lanky? Must be up to his neck in women.

And with a sexy name like Jarvis Cocker, I've no doubts about my former statement.

  • I think the girl at 1:51 is Sadie Frost

  • She's in the whole video - right from the beginning.

  • thank you, captain obvious. since he was noticing her at 1:51 and wondering who she is, I thought it might be helpful to disclose a non-obvious piece of info.

  • I'm sorry, I thought I was helping out.

  • alright, I am sorry too for being snippy. Let's all go back to enjoying a song that was ahead of its time.

  • I know the name of the greek girl! :)))

  • Who´s she? Lovely girl :-)

  • when's the 90's style gonna come back?!it's been 80's revival for like over 9000 days now.great song :P

  • De antollooogiaa diggnoo de favoritoss y oxorrocientas estrellas!

  • Jarvis rules!!!!

  • some of the responses on here are above and retarded. but what can one expect on youtube? this song speaks volumes if you actually listen to and diges the lyrics. a friend and i actually played a cover of this song at a charity event because so many of the people at that particular one were in it for the notoriety and not to actually help out. and screw anyone that chooses william shatner over the pulp version. william shatnr knowing how the "common people" feel? i think not!

  • Épico!

  • They played on Letterman years ago, and they should have knocked this song off the charts. Listen to the words..." Live like common people, dance and drink and screw because there's nothing else to do!" Incredible song!

  • I love you Pulp!!!!

  • I completely agree

  • die

  • she is still Sadie Frost..even after she divorced him!

  • The girl in this clip is Sadie Frost, before she divorced Jude Law

  • I absolutely love William Shatner's version of this song, before I ever heard it before this version by Pulp (which I assume is the original). It is a *brilliant* piece of song writing.

  • Perfect.

  • these guys and this vid are epicly awesome

  • He was my neighbour in Paris for a while.

I used to see him in the street. Don't know what happened, he's not here anymore.

  • You must be that spoiled girl of the video...

  • I cannot fucking believe they edited out "screw".

  • Agreed. Apparently universalmusicgroup still listens to those laughable reports that claim our youth learns it's bad habits from music.
