How does CVT save fuel exactly? A normal auto would not have the engine almost redlining in this situation until it had 1) about to change gear or 2) reached top speed. This thing is almost redlining the entire time = chewing fuel.

I have A 2010 Maxima myself. its fast no doubt about it... I had a 2005 Altima SE V6 no CVT and it was about as fast as this maxima, and around 400 pounds lighter. that being said... I agree with the other guy whoi said if the Computer wasnt limited.. Wow it would be a missle! Need to find out how to get a chip that I can put on to remove the limiter, than take off before I return the car back to Nissan.

CVT's were meant for small good mileage cars with low torque engines. They were amazing for the mileage and they present a smoother more natural acceleration. But personally, if you actually like cars a little bit, don't get a CVT. They have no advantage vs normal automatics or manuals because the technology is not near advance enough at higher torques because at higher torques, the pulleys tend to have micro slips thus having a slower acceleration especially at higher speeds.

@DNALI During normal driving, it gives you the rpms that generate the best possible fuel economy and desired acceleration. for instance, you can go from 0-80 within 10 seconds without ever going over 3500 rpms.

My car does not go that slow... I went more than 100 and it was faster than this Maxima I also kept it in regular D no Ds no Manual... I am thinking of putting on a y pipe with stilln intake and Lightweight Crank Pulley with custom pre deleted cats I WILL have around 340 HP I gotta dyno it... I m missing tje exhaust the reason y I don't want it it'll be toooo loud!

@nitrorckid123 That's just a matter of tuning. Plenty of guys out there have already modded it and gotten the car tuned to where it doesn't lose so much power after 90mph. Besides, the average Maxima driver will rarely (if ever) have to go over 90mph.

@stuntmanP26 Really don't care for front wheel drive cars as much, but the CVTs do seem to have a greater advantage over a normal automatic on these cars. Listening to the way it's explained, the CVTs sound like a more advanced centrifugal clutch. I've ridden along in my buddy's Sentra with the CVT and I'll say it's not too shabby.

guys, stop dissing my leased car, lol... this maxima blows away any older Maxima, Camaro SS, 350z, G35, Mustang GT, mercedes 3 class, bmw 3 and 5 class, cadilac CTS - the CVT rocks and if you optimize it for a turbo - forget it i will be eating half of Miami for breakfast. This car also goes offroading on weekend so don't diss before u drive 1 with the parts i put in :)

@stuntmanP26 This is a wicked old post but for the sake of teaching dumb people...Camaro SS's are 13 second cars and Mustang GT's as far as I know are too or close to it, 350Z are also 13 sec...I have an 07 Maxima and it's low 15's high 14's. And with an extra 35 hp does not make the 09+ that much faster...You need a turbo just to keep up with those cars.

They're nice, but IMO, the best Maxima is the 5.5 gen one. It has the 255 HP VQ35DE stock, and a 6 speed manual.

yea its got a a gay rev limiter. f**kin pisses me off to. apparently its supposed to limit to 120 also but mine sails to 130 like this one and then cuts off. i read somewhere though that w/o the rev limiter it tops out at 156
