My great regret is to not have had the opportunity to have met the man himself.... Wow! It all makes perfect sense now. Absolutely EVERYTHING, from the millions of stars/planets all the way down to innumerable quarks- all existing in PERFECT harmony with one another, came from absolutely.......... NOTHING!
Our laws of physics break down when calculating back to that point, so we are unsure at this moment what happened prior. To simply throw up our arms and say "god did it" would be a great disservice to mankind.

Space oddity is over rated. The intro with the apes is laborious. It's very slow, and the sound "fill" for space scenes highly irritating, he should rather have had no sound during the space scenes instead of that white noise, guess muting the sound achieves the same result.

Actually, it was Stanley Kramer who directed "On the Beach," not Stanley Kubrick. The two stylistically are vastly different, though Kubrick probably would have loved directed the film of Shute's novel, if he was not swamped with "Spartacus" at the time.

@Redcaster916 I wish you were correct about his effect as much as you are correct about his intelligence. Unfortunately, the people of the world are a pious crowd. What evidence can one provide to those that don't value evidence? What erudite line of thinking can one provide to convince those that believe that true intelligence is provided by one book? It will be a battle uphill, but hopefully the curve of learning for belief will mirror that of the curve for knowledge.

Look at what Carl Sagan did. What he taught and said affected millions – and it was complete likewise for Hitchens.

I don't recall him ever laughing about the death of innocents, either. Real classy, though. Wishing for the suffering of a man who's done nothing to deserve it. Big bang does not equal from nothing. that's religion, ex nihilo. On another note, On the Beach is one of my favorites. I read it as a kid, and have always enjoyed re-reading it. I didn't know anyone else who felt that way about it... I knew there was a reason Hitchens and I agree on quite a lot :)

It is the idea that 13.7 billion years ago the Universe was an infinitesimally small point, and then expanded by virtue of gravity into what it is now – that’s it – that’s all the theory states.

Space oddity is over rated. The intro with the apes is laborious. It's very slow, and the sound "fill" for space scenes highly irritating, he should rather have had no sound during the space scenes instead of that white noise, guess muting the sound achieves the same result.

And the first thing that always comes to mind is that such a title is redundant. It would be like having a section of books called "Fictional Greek Mythology".
