I never had a MRE, but it seems that they were pretty good and more convenient to haul around.....They quit packing cigs in the "C ration" MCI meals starting in 1972....heck in 1985, you had at least a meal (with the cigs) that was 12 years old.....but well preserved....I can remember some c's that I got in Nam that was packed in the early 50's!.....I only spent 3 years in Army (besides Nam) spending 8 months in Germany in Hanau...Thanks for your post!!!
My unit in Germany in 1985 had the last C-Rats without the cigarettes. My favorites were ham slices, ham and eggs, spagehtti and meatballs, and the turkey. The "John Wayne candy" toffee candy were awsome like the "Combat Birthday Cake" pound cake and fruit cake were also good.We also had these during JROTC spring camp in the early 80s too.Brings back memories. They had at one time brought back ham and eggs in MRE form too.
Good question! Back in that time period in the 1960' s, our country called on us to help out a country whose freedom was in jeopardy....in this case, it was fight against Communist aggression, at that time was spreading throughout Southeast Asia....We, as very young American soldiers, were called up by our country to help defend another nation in the name of freedom....Freedom is the foundation of our United States of America which gives us all the right for freedoms including speech
Looks are deceiving (lol) looking at these rations....If I was out in the desert starving for food and had a case of these things, I would maybe try the pound cake and the contents in the cracker cans for survival, but not any other of the meat cans, fruit, cakes, or peanut butter....the cigs would be ok maybe if I was desparate, but still I wouldn't recommend to anyone to consume any part of these rations for health reasons. Any canned meat cans over 40 yrs old is not safe.
Yes, these ones in this video did have the 4 cigarette pack of cigarettes.....The last time these accessory packets was in 1971....starting in 1972, the accessory pack did not contain cigarettes......if you go to my second part of this video titled "vietnam c-rations#2.mpg", at the end of that video, I did open up an accessory pack where you can view the contents including the cigarettes...thank you for watching the video!
Thanks for your comments sir.......Alot of these rations I check out are mostly spoiled with leaking cans....The accessory packet which contains the 4 cigarette pack is vacuumed packed pretty good so if anything from the 60's MCI's that still is in pretty fair shape, it probably would be the cigs.....but I would strongly recommend not to consume no part of these things, including smoking the cigs....in 1974, these rations would still be ok to use....Thanks again for your comments
My Uncle was a Master gunney im the Marine Corp. He used to snag the C-RATS for my BoyScout troop it was great we ate them up my Scout Master was a Marine would steal the pack with the smokes LOL he was reliving memories I guess. The food in the C-RATS IN 1974 where still ediable
theliberator1.....thanks for your comments on the FRED, the P-38.....that ol' P-38 was the best device ever invented by the military as far as personal convienance goes....thanks again...take care
cbarsonfire....the old Shelby P-38 out of these MCI cartons last along time....I've had one on my key chain since 1969....I still have a few left put away still in the wrapper they came in.....Thanks for your comments sir...
Your dad is correct.....a lot of the meat was not too salty, but basically was not the favorite meal coming out of the case, at least for me.......The entire individual meal was designed to be a high protein low calorie offering....When a soldier was hungry, and there wasn't too much of a choice, any c-ration meat meal hit the spot......now if a soldier was first to pick out a ration from a freshly opened case, ham and lima beans was definitely not his preference.....but your dad is correct...
A while back i saw in an episode of Ray Mears about Vietnam where he had a visit from someone who ate a piece of meat from 1969 and in his eyes it was still good. The fruits and vegetables would not meet the MRL safety standards for pesticides of today since they used DDT in that time.I wonder if the MRE from that time didn't contain something with DDT to protect the soldier against the mosquitoes.
To videomaniac108....thank you sir for commenting on my video....WWII era C's did pop up once in a while im nam..the B1A unit C's with the canned fruit are the most ruined with leakage, rust, or dried out....thank you for your service and welcome home!
I was in the Army in 69/70 and some of the C-rats that we were eating had been canned during the WWII era. The stuff was fine, no spoiled or contaminated items. You just wanted to make sure that the cans weren't bulged, a sign of bacterial contamination. Since I didn't smoke, I would trade my cigarettes for fruit or pound cake, good stuff that pound cake.
EMT302001....Ham and Lima Beans were the Cs that most soldiers did not like....those Cs you mentioned from 1948 would be something to look at (lol)...thanks for your comments!
~smile~ they kept the good CRats to be opened now. I would work chow runner as part of my job as Victor 4 377SPS TSN. I opened the earliest box. Now this was spring of 1971 and I opened one that was early 1948. It was diferent then the later ones as they also had fruit and chocolate bars that were white from age.
The fruit in these old rations are usually all dried up and/or the cans exploded....the pound cake was one of my favorites in Vietnam...we used to trade rations off between our fellow soldiers in Vietnam..I could tolerate the fruit, poundcake, and the cigarettes out of the Cs then, but everything else was "tradable" then (lol)...
I had these for years. You can also find these on Ebay (the whole carton) from time to time). I also put part 2 of this video on you tube where you can see the contents of the accessory pack. Thanks for your comments!
Thanks for your comments....I know what you mean...when you are in the jungle and starved, the MCI "c rations" was a life saver, unless you liked raw rice (lol).
No sir..these rations are collectables only and not to be consumed....these rations are also displayed in some Vietnam War museums..thanks for asking.
Hello MsNATARELLA....Please pass along my thanks to your dad for his service....He has gone through alot over there in Vietnam....I can certainly understand the bad memories he may have seeing this video....God Bless him and thank you very much for your nice comments!
Hi ReeseBranson......if you click on this page to "vietnam c-rations #2mpg" you will see the remainder of this video including opening up of the accessory pack....thank you
Thanks twom44....sorry about last post I did...I hit the wrong keys (lol)...I collected this stuff over many years....I really appreciate you nice comments
First of all "Thank you for your service" Secondly, where the heck did you get a case of these from after all these years. Thirdly, "Welcome home, Well done" I salute you!!!
My father served in Vietnam, was stationed in Da Nang. 1968-1969, I believe. I saw your video and wanted to show him...and he kind of looked at me like....uh...no way. lol Apparently, he had no desire to take a trip down canned bread memory lane. Great video. I really enjoyed it.
oohrah1996....howdy and thanks for the question....I have had these for awhile and I think I paid close to a hundred bucks for the case a few years ago...keep in mind though that when you get access to a whole unopened case of these 60's c-rations, a good 40% of the contents are rotten. The only solid good items in these cases are basically the accessory packs because they are vacuumed sealed. The remaining stuff, you take a chance on being in collectable shape. Always get a pre 1971 c's!
howdy pvtjoker777.....you betcha....during the war, I enjoyed the cigarettes the best as long as they were not Kents....The fruit was ok too but the main meal cans were hard to take but you know as well as I do, you had to keep truckin back them because you really had no choice.....I liked the LRRPs alot better especially the chili con carne because (1) you got more because you used hot water to mix the crunchy beans in the supplied bag (2) the bad thing there was no cigs.....take it easy now "!
Sorry but I don't sell these items. You can purchase items like these at a reasonable price through E-Bay by checking "c-rations". There are many c-rations for sale there including full cases. I hope this helps you out. Good luck.

Question.
My father, South Vietnamese soldier, told me that the canned meat he was given wasn't salty like spam at all and that it tasted good.
Is that true?

I dont know, but it sounds logical.
