This was the only time that I liked Manny..... He was awesome... too bad they did not take their act to the WWF together.. .they would have won the WWF Tag belts too
A million dollars was a marketing tv selling gimmick. Rude was more than likely right. $1000. Was probably the true purse. NWA was never that big to offer a million dollars.
Rick Rude and the Bull were alot better on the mike than Paul Jones.Managers were usually used mostly for teams that didn't do much talking on the mike like the Midnight Express.Paul Jones was very average as a manager.I wish R&R had stayed together longer in the nwa. They were a great tag team.
@vousallezvous I LOL'd at your comment too. I think it's funny to think back to how we believed it back in those days...where did we think the money was coming from? They didn't even sell enough tickets for $1,000,000 and they had no sponsors...were we expected to believe the promoters were giving it out of the kindness of their hearts? That sure sounds like wrestling promoters!
Always loved Manny Fernandez.. Was SO underrated. His ring work was really great. Loved Rude too and had more charisma but Manny was the better wrestler.
god damnit! this stuff brings back the good ole days of wraslin.. ..i remember when these two beat rock n roll on this low budges 3 row seats show....they had their bodies all greased up with oil ...so that ricky and robert couldnt grab em..haha. clevar writing. haha.
the power of the mustache. you can tell this was the 80's and tom selleck was at the top of his popularity by the number of mustaches evident in this video.
wasn't paul jones part of the office then? im not gonna take away from his accomplishments in the ring, but his drawing power was questionable. i dont know.
@TheLizardKing1967 I thought that too, now they're both up in heaven winning each other's lookalike contests. I always thought it would've been something if Mayes would go on TV and say ' Cut the intro music. What I'd like to have right now is for all fat, out of shape, sports-hungry male viewers of this infomercial to keep the noise down while I show the ladies how Orange-Glo works.'
I was a kid when this came out but I remember late saturday nights when I should have been in bed watching saturday night wrestling wwf came on at 10 and nwa came on at 11 and nwa was always ALWAYS much more intense than wwf its also where I learned alot rock and roll from when Rude and Fernandez came down to queens we will rock you it was always intense I think real life needs entrance music
Manny is an awesome guy. He did so many positive things in his prime. Every now and then he steps in the ring to perform. He can still go. He took me under his wing and I learned more in one month than I did in my past nine years in the business. I wish there was more men like him around.
holy shit the other day this guy came into the resturaunt that i work at and his name was manny fernandez, he told me to google him and its this dude, thats crazy
paul jones was a good heel just like JR foley from stampede wrestling.
Anyways, does anyone have the infamous event when Manny fernandez was bought by Paul jones and the raging bull hit Valliant with the suitcase? I can't find it on youtube
In a shoot interview with Michael Hayes..he said that he, Rude, and 90% of the wrestlers would get high before they did appearances...he said everyone was smoking!!
so i dont doubt he's stuck in this interview..his "1,000 dollar" reference is the second giveaway....
if Rude was'nt becoming such a huge draw, and especially in his return from his succesful WWF (aka the "minors") run, he was a huge draw!! when Watts left, Eric Bischoff rode Rude until he could'nt any more and made a killing!! Rude was a huge draw and always in the title scene..plus Manny stopped working out, and the burritos took over immediatel! so splitting up the team after that sick run they had, was a no brainer for the NWA. Plus fernandez contract was up, and he dipped to the AWA in 88
yeah, they were wrestling in 1987 after returning from 2002 LOL...Royal&Champion were in a car accident and the team was never the same. Royal came back before Champion if I remember correctly
Haha Wow, he does look stoned. I saw Randy Savage smoke a joint at a show in Jackson Tennessee. I was 10 years old and I went up to ask for an autograph. Savage looked at me like I was crazy and walked away.
Oh no it was Savage. It was about a few months before he left Memphis and went to WWF. According to The Iron Shiek, Savage constantly smoked weed and crack.
Rude and Fernandez were two of my all time favorites. Add in Paul Jones and the were totally freakin' awesome!! They were great heels cuz they would cheat but they never acted cowardly.
Good old days... I remember Manny Fernandez back in the Southwest Championship Wrestling calling old latins "Gente cochina, gente mugrosa! and later that year he would refer to latins as "Mi gente hermosa" LOL
My favorite aspect w/ Rude & Fernandez was that they would demolish their opponents, usually jobbers, in seconds. It'd usually follow this formula: 1) Their entrance song (Queen's "We Will Rock You," IIRC) starts 2) Rude & Fernandez rush to the ring 3) The jobbers are quickly disposed of and pinned, while the entrance theme was still playing.
Rude & Fernandez usually went straight for their respective finishers and barely broke a sweat in doing any wrestling maneuvers.
does anyone have a clip of paul jones wrestling? when did rick rude leave for the wwf? how long was he in nwa world championship wrestling? where is paul jones now?
Rude showed up in the NWA after losing the World Class title to Chris Adams 7/4/86. He left around the end of May 1987 - while he still had the tag team belt!
I used to hate Manny Fernandez, because I was a Four Horseman fan. But when he joined forces and became champ, he was hot. Sadly his career never reached these heights again. He did to a decent tour in WCC Puerto Rico.
Yes, Rude went to the WWF and joined the Heenan Family soon afterwards. In fact, Paul Orndorff was so mad that Orndorff fired Bobby Heenan. He couldn't stand having someone with a body just as good as his in the family.
Wow, not one of Rude's better efforts on the stick. Manny was great as usual. One of the most underrated mic guys ever--definitely personified "It's not what he says, it's how he says it."
