Ahh yes, crowds of happy Russians waltzing away to their heart's content in minus 35 degree weather right beside the Trans Siberian Railroad. Afterward they were transported to a farm collective and made to harvest crops with sickles and sythes to feed the Communist Party apparachicks in Moscow. Pure bliss.
Thank you VERY MUCH for putting this online. It is fascinating to see the original scenes that Shostakovich wrote the wonderful music for -- which eventually became his "2nd Waltz" (and used decades later in Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut"). A small request - - What was "Pervyy Eshelon" about? Could you please tell us the story of this film? And what are these people talking about - what is going on - in these 2 particular scenes? Please write if you know. Many Thanks!
@cyberlarry7 Soviet Union needed to boost its wheat production by expanding the farming lands. "The First Train" depicts one of the first groups of young soon-to-be-farmers arriving in the harsh steppes of Kazakhstan. The dialogs praise the important role of youth in this uneasy business. Mostly propaganda. A few very prominent actors make their first appearance in this film. M. Kalatozov, (director) later became known in the west with "The Crane are flying" (Cannes Palme d'Or) and "Red Tent"
You're right that it's not a waltz from any jazz suite - this here is a film soundtrack composed by Shostakovich as well. And the all well known "Waltz no. 2" is a modified arrangement of this one (as You can hear, one section is missing here), placed by him few years later in a "Suite for Variety Orchestra" (which was rediscovered decades later and mistaken for the 2nd Jazz Suite).
I always loved the movie "the cranes are flying". I first sah the movie when I was 12 and this video clip brought those memories back. Thank you.
