We haven't been defeated by anyone but ourselves sir. This is a free market society, not a police-state. We over stepped our bounds. We aren't downsizing our military we're actucally strengthing it by recalling it back to american soil. In time they will learn that there is another way through peace. It's a christian/muslim/buddhist ideal. The second largest military in the world is 17 times smaller than us man. Which is why we can do things like reject the UN's ruling to not attack Iraq.
I'll answer it. Papeluso, If you've got shiny rocks in your back yard and I want them. I can take them or trade them with you. Say I decided to take them and stay in your yard so I can find more shiny rocks. Say I killed your dog because he pooped on one of your shiny rocks I liked. Are you not angry yet? We did it and we can't go back and undo it. All we can do as human morals allow is to apologize and leave immediately. Leave it up to the leaders to decide whether or not to do anything.
What is the objective of the terrorists? If it is for the U.S to get out of their land then yes, once the troops are pulled they will think they have won. If their objective is to destroy the U.S what does our presence their serve? 9/11 was accomplished by few people with little resources. We are spending far more resources trying to stop them then they have. Finally, Al-quida is losing power. They are running out of money and recruits, the bigger threat to America is the Mexican boarder.
The terrorists aren't the bullies. The U.S., via its foreign policy, is the bully (since 1947), and gave rise to the hate and extremism that inspired terrorist attacks as a desperate attempt to fight back. Before the U.S. was involved in the Middle East, Muslims didn't care what happened on our side of the planet, any more than we did there. Leaving the Mid East won't immediately douse the flames of hate - the kid who was bullied will carry the scars of abuse for years - but its a start.
Some would call me a terrorist sympathizer, say I'm blaming America, or use other phraseology to attack me personally instead of addressing the points I've made. However, truth is truth, and I would say that those who don't recognize the mistakes of the past are indirectly to blame for the terrorist attacks of tomorrow.
After all, when we left Vietnam, did it embolden Vietnamese terrorists to attack America? Nope, they just wanted us gone.
@Shanockdotcom The problem I have with your position is that if you look at international situations in which the US was not involved for any length of time, you'll see that many Muslim based countries became oppressive by themselves.
Look at Pakistan, Afghanistan (pre-Sept 11), Syria and Iran (after the revolution in the 1970s) as a few examples were the US foreign policy had no (to little) impact.
Thus, I have to DISAGREE with "foreign policy" arguement.
@papeluso Though you say you disagree with my argument, none of the points you made contradict anything I said. They choose to follow beliefs and practices that lend themselves to oppression. Unless they change, they will be oppressed, and anything we do to change their way of life will naturally be met with hostility. You may think we can stop terrorism by changing these people, but in truth, these people become terrorists because we try to change them. It's not our fight.
@papeluso US removed a elected government and installed the Shah in Iran. This made people angry at the US in Iran, this lead to a nationalist rising because they don't want other nations messing with Iranian politics.
Also look at it from US is the invading nation, so we must take arms and get our independence. The more "terrorists" you kill, the more hate you get.
All they want is to live in peace, alone, with no drone bombing everyday.
@IRUSIpanzermaster I have to respectfully disagree with you for a couple or reasons:
1) Why hasn't Iran become a respected Islamic state like Turkey since 1979 (when the Shah finally left). That's at least 32 years under theocracy and no American intervention.
2) And finally, I DO NOT BELIEVE the Muslim culture wants to live in peace with anyone. As the title of their religion suggest (Islam = submit) if you do not submit the non-believer will be punished!
@papeluso I am a christian, but I know from my Muslim friends that Islam does not teach violence, it teaches peace just like Christianity. It does call non Muslims "without knowledge" but that is not important.
The radical Muslims that blow things up are not even following what there religion says, its because the Muslim world is opposed by the west such hate is made. Its no different then Christians blowing up abortion clinics.
You take words like "submit" and turn it into something else.
Because they don't have a navy, or an air force big dummy. They don't even have enough gas for themselves. They don't have an army, they have a few guys w/ assault weapons. all the American troops that have died, are because they're over there. If Paul would of been president in 08' most of our boys and girls would still be alive today! Ron Paul is known to raise the most money in his campaign than any other candidate, which 70% of his contribution came from the military.....
@Kindrickskayaks I disagree with the "they don't have enough money" argument because Sept 11th, the Shoe Bomber, the Madrid bombing and countless other terror activities have taken place with very little money.
Therefore, I do not see money as an issue.
I am more concerned about the extremist believing they are now winning when we remove our troops (See the Fall of Saigon for example).

It takes a pretty creative mind to view the largest military force on Earth, currently engaged in 4 land wars, as a "victim" of a "bully".

@evilbert81 **** PLEASE DO NOT GET OFFENDED BY MY REPLY. BUT....*****
your response is a defeatist attitude because the sections of the world we are dealing with WILL NOT become our allies if we apologize and withdraw.
AS A MATTER OF FACT: I believe aplogizing to these countries is a sign of weakness that will be acted upon by our enemies.
