Thank God Great White did that JUNK cover! cuz when Ian got the check he went on tour doing it the right way, and I got to see him! Although I agree this version is to laid back, and does miss Ronson on guitar.
just curious, would anyone know the brand of ian's sunglasses? their absolutely epic and always have been curious on what they are. btw his music kicks ass =D
@bucketsz ... it's really hard to" f" up a great song... Mott the Hoople was a band that really was a rock band ahead of their time... I'm so glad I was witness to an Ian Hunter concert...
No offense to Ian Hunter but I like Great White's version of this better mainly because they put that extra boost in the song and, apparently, when Great White recorded this,Ian hated it but I bet he wasn't complaining when the check came in...
Id cross a few words with Ian...all I d can say is MR HUNTER YOU RE THE BEST LIVING TALENT IN ROCK MUSIC..some of his song are better than the best of Dylan s
I have met Ian Hunter and his wife Trudy a few times. What a great human being. Ian, God bless you for your persistance and hard work. I know you miss Mick, but life is life, you enjoy what you have while you have it.
Ian, Please keep writing music, as you are truly one of a kind. We love you ! ! !
One thing about the 70's, most of the people I knew who liked music liked anything rock and roll or rock and roll adjacent. If it was good, it was good, Bowie to Zeppelin to Elton Johh - ok now I've gone too far - actually, check out the first album and Tumblewee Connection. You should probably stop there, but Yellow Brick Road has it's attractions, although the shelf life is short.
I actually like the Great White version as well, not as much as I like Ian's though. As far as I know that's the only song of theirs I do like. I could give a crap about how a band dresses or has a good time.
Wow, I've been hearing the album version since 70 whatever when I immediately ran out and bought it. I really like this version - amazed he's in such good shape. I thought he must have choked on his own vomit by now (70's joke - no offense intended)
I couldn't find anyone back then to enjoy Ian and Mott as much as me. Made my brother take me to see them in New Orleans, '77, great...some group called "Queen" was their warm up band. How lucky was I?!?!
heh...saw the same tour...Ian threw Freddy out the hotel window (second story...fortunately they were just above the entrance awning)...end of the tour for Queen...Kings College gymnasium in Wilkes Barre PA...4th row...Queen was incredible...started with "Father to Son"...Mott kicked ass...and there were alot of fans out there...sometimes hard to find!
Great white ruined this song all they can do is kill what few fans they have the whole ian hunter solo is awesome one of my favorite is the truth whole trush nothing but the truth
I saw Mott 3 times back in the glam rock days and LOVED THEM! This is a really nice video, and Ian Hunter still rocks, but... listen to the studio cut. It's brilliant!
One of my favourite Mott/Hunter songs and this works well with an Orchestra. One dimension is taken away but another one successfully replaces it. Have the DVD and play it regularly. Thanx for the post.
This the origanal?

@witchman1 Well, Ian is indeed the original: He wrote the song. And I've loved his performance of it for many years, both live and recorded.

No diss to Ian... but this really makes me miss The Late Great Mick Ronson.
Ronson's guitar work was the perfect compliment to Hunter's distinct vocal style. RIP.

Just goes to show that it's such a great tune even Great White couldn't ruin it.

This is the original song, Great White happened to record it and made it heavier. I prefer the Ian Hunter version much better!

Great song from an Ian Hunter solo album. Shows why Ian is timeless and Jack Russell will only be remembered as a jerk.
