@toucanman90 Do they scream and screech like macaws do? If not, i'm getting one when i get older. Can't stand birds with ear piercing screeches =). Do they bite hard though?
@seanthamaster No their screams are not like Macaws at all, its frog like croaks, and clocks like a deck of cards being flickered, and creaking sounds like a squeaky door. They dont bite hard, you do feel pressure, they can break the skin if the serrations on the sides of the beak cut you, but other than that the bite isnt extreme
@marcosis96 oh sweet man, yeah they arent to hard to take care of. Its just preparing the food thats the hardest. It has to be chopped to 3/8in cubes for them to comfortably swallow. If its too big they mush it up to make it small and make a mess. Other than that, just the general maintance, clean the cage, and spend time with him
Rocky is adorable :) I like his clicking sound; Pixie, our Swainson's, purrs when she is happy. What fantastic family members - if you're ready for the commitment of taking care and loving them!
@jenbacca Yeah they are worth it. I knew what I was getting into when Make-A-Wish got him for me, and the past four years have been awesome with him. He comes to fundraisers at my college all the time and really seems to love the attention
@VizorDragon Depends on where you live, I live just outside NYC and there are several exotic pet stores around us that sell toucans..most people buy directly from breeders Jerry Jennings of Emerald Forest Bird Gardens in San Diego, California is the best.
What size/type of cage do you have him in? I always was under the impression that you needed an enormous enclosure for one, but from what I can see your cage looks macaw sized. It gives me new hope of owning one :)
@marigilfoil They just need a cage they can hop back and forth in, enough to open and close their wings...the best option for the average person is either a large macaw cage like what I have (6ft tall, 4ft long, 3ft wide) or a finch aviary which is roughly the same size.
Such a beautiful bird! Just read your story, and I'm so glad you were able to be granted a wish! The Make-A-Wish are fantastic, and they have given me a wish too! Such wonderful people!
does he snip you? and since his beak is so big won't your fingers get chopped off and all bloody??? I have a senegal parrot and even his beak makes huge punctures in my fingers and my fingers bleeds everwhere!
I really love toucans! Someday I want a curl crested aracari (Someday being when I can scrape enough cash together, they really are expensive)
I saw your story on the EmeraldForest website and I can relate.
I just finished 9 months of chemo for burkitt's lymphoma (non-hodgkins) last year when I was 16 as well and my wish was to go to washington DC. I go next month! =)
It never really occured to me to ask them for a toucan. I think I missed a good oppertunity there.
@Skyeflyte No you didnt miss an opportunity to wish for something...a curl crested aracari is one of my dream toucans, and congradulations on your trip.
It isn't. Maybe in some cities or municipalities with very strict exotic pet laws, but mostly it's not any legally different from having a parrot or other exotic bird. Some subspecies might be endangered, and therefore illegal to own, but the ones you would normally see as pets like the toco and keel bill are not.
@stempel2000 At this point, the bird would probably die if it was in the wild. And to say how the animal feels about its caretaker without actually knowing them in person is QUITE an assumption to make. If people thought the same about wolves so long ago (granted the humans of that time did not live on such morals), we would not have the domesticated dogs we know and love today. Also, if you're not already familiar with "Christian the Lion" go watch it and say that cat didn't love those men.
lets not go that far, doestication is a long term process for a specie, and takes hundreds of years of breeding.
Rocko is technically a tame hand reared toucan. He is still also technically a wild animal, but because he was raised by humans, he knows to love and trust humans, while at the same time he is able to interact with other birds
@toucanman90 Actually it doesn't have to take that long. Silver foxes were domesticated in 40-50 years in Russia. Not sure how fast toucans can breed though. :P
@toucanman90 i have a question:how much will a keel-billed toucan cost?and is it endangered?also is the toco toucan endangered and how much does it cost?
@mitsospower12 Keel billed toucans are between $3,500, and $5,000 depending on the breeder..Jerry Jennings where I got my toucan I recommend him highly. Keel billeds as far as I know are not endangered, and neither is the toco, and toco toucans run between $8,000 and $12,000
there not soft its just because the beaks are so big that it doesnt have as much force as lets say a parrot a parrrot or macaw could take off your finger but tucans cant because ot is so big
The regulations for keeping these animals varies from state to state, most states' regulations is that they should be able to spread their wings and their tail or wings shouldn't touch the cage. Oh my gosh, he's so adorable! I'd love to get a toucan someday, whenever I can afford it. They're my favorite animal. How much did this little guy cost?
well toucanman....consider yourself quite lucky to own a pet as exotic and unique as that one.
