  • I doubt her expression comes from drug use. I say this for two reasons: one, this was a pre-Fosse polished version and, two, the original Cabaret had a Sally Bowles (Judy Dench) that was not supposed to be a perfect singer in the first place. Combine that with an always excited and expressive Liza and you get what we see here. And, personally, I think it's grand.

  • She is like her mother, if you watch her mother on film when she was around 13, she was very jazzy then moved as a young adult to more mainstream musical. this clip shows the same in Liza, more jazzy before turning to a more polished musical. the same is seen in barbra streisand, its like they were more wild and carefree prior to being groomed and mature.

  • the back beating really annoyed me haha xx

  • Liza was addicted when she was younger, maybe already at this stage, although unlike her mother when she was confronted she sought professional help and is clean/sober today

  • Awful performance, Miss Liza!

  • Over the top, but she was in France. I always thought she was a better actress than singer, a little carried away here. Kaye Ballard wrote how she befriended Ebb early and hired him for her cabaret material, and that he wrote this song for her based on a flip comment she made. When he gave it to Liza later, ended their relationship for a long spell.

  • 1967 - you guys think she's on something?? Geez - talk about seeing what you want to see. This is Broadway Liza - so this is all she knows before her technique matured. Geez. Grab a shovel, dig for garbage, and eventually you'll find it. Huh.

  • She no Judy, that's for sure.

  • We 'knew' Fred Ebb - in the Biblical sense.

  • She's not on something, her mum is still alive at this time although barely and as thin as Liza is here, she still hadn't found herself and is probably trying to find her own interpretation. Can you imagine the strain she musta been under with Judy so ill. Ebb and Kander really helped mould her in the next few year also she only knew to sing like Judy but didn't have the power then.

  • Comment removed

  • well liza was asked to be in the broadway show buy kander and ebb but the director wanted an english girl to play sally so in 1972 liza got the roll fossee did not want this song liza begged him and sang her butt off and well the rest is history

  • i agree legref.

  • Her talent is one-of-a-kind. Of all talents in the world, I'd like to have hers...

  • It´s kind of funny to think of her singing this song "maybe this time" before starring in "Cabaret" (1972) 5 years later..

    He he.

But I know the song is old.

  • this is just too hysterical, somebody must have counceled her to deepen her voice and tone down her style a bit...maybe Kaye Thompson gave her some pointers as she was largely responsible for the style of her mother too...

  • Well, I think by the time they made the movie her voice deepened naturally from all of the singing she had to do over the course of five years, but it is pretty hysterical. I don`t mean this as an insut to her by asking, but do you think she was on something? My step-brother was sort of like that when he sang while on something...

I`m going to get a few thumbs down for this, aren`t I?

  • @STUPIDxxSITE I am amazed you didn't just get thumbs-downed, but not removed altogher. Yes, she was clearly on something here, and I don't mean Vic's Vap-o-Rub. She was wildly off-key here and ran out of steam at the end, something she almost never did in the early years of her career; that would come later.

  • @STUPIDxxSITE I don't think this is Druggie-Liza.I think this is Theatrical-Liza. This is 2 years after Flora & the Red Menace. If you can find a live recording (not the studio cast record) from that show you will hear a very expressive, not-in-perfect-voice Liza. 1) She is very young in her voice here. And 2), being a Broadway star involves sometimes exaggerated motions & strong projection of voice.Currently on YouTube there is a live recording of Sing Happy--much rougher than cast record.

  • fabulous!!

  • This song is from the 1966 broadway show Cabaret which was subsequently made into a movie starring Liza for which she won her only Oscar. She sang the song in the movie and it stayed in her repertoire of her concerts for the next 40 yrs. Maybe she was "auditioning" to be in the movie as I'm sure the minute it was a hit on broadway a film version was being put together for some "lucky" woman.

  • Actually Maybe This Time was not in the original Broadway production of Cabaret. Liza sung it on her first album in 1964 when she was 17. When they were making Cabaret Fosse needed a new song and it was her suggestion to use Maybe This Time. The song was subsequently put into the Broadway revival.

Liza auditioned for the Broadway version of Cabaret several times but was not ultimately cast. But she put the song Cabaret in her concerts and ended up doing the movie of course.

  • Thank you for the specifics...Think she should call it a day? Voice hasn't sounded in "peak" form in a LONG time. . .

  • Actually I think you should call it a day!. I wonder how much mis-information you spread around daily - Clearly you're not a New Yorker and weren't able to see "Liza's at the Palace" for which she'll be winning a Tony award on Sunday. I always wonder about the motives of small people such as yourself who take pleasure denigrating others - truth be damned. Enjoy your small, miserable life...... .

  • Well she won the Tony - guess you're not a voter! A shame in your vast knowledge of Liza - you never learned to spell her name correctly - how sad for you

You may live in NYC but you're no New Yorker!

  • get your facts straight before you start to get snarky... "her only oscar" -- how many do you have?

  • What is the source of this amazing clip? I love you Liza!

  • Hmm. Interesting. I've seen her do this song many times over the years, but never in this style.

I believe this is back in the period when "they"* were still trying to mold her into the next Streisand. Check out the haircut from the left side.

*"They" being probably Capitol Records, even though this is close to the time when she switched over to A&M Records.

  • @emilytripp I think you hit the nail on the head. I ttook a few more years for her to find her own style.

  • @emilytripp I agree and I like your comment! I also thought 'Streisand!!' when she was getting towards the end of this performance :)

This is such great footage, Liza is amazing.
