What led to the boom and bust was that debt after debt was poured into LAND. Land is not taxed. Tax land by its value and eliminate income tax and boom and busts will stop. The two most dynamic economies in the world HOng Kong and Singapore use Land Valuation Tax, 40% and 30% of expenditure respectively.
@NearAbbeyRoad singapore and hongkong tax land for a good reason, it stops shanty towns going up and makes sure land that only those who can make it work properly can afford it namely the rich. meanwhile in the UK land is so expensive only the rich can afford to live in the country and coucils colude with local dignatarys to keep the poor in their place namely in high density towns and citys were they control them with cctv and the fuzz. the rich are in control just look at your councilors.
HK & Singapore tax land because it lowers income tax promoting enterprise and gains more taxation. HK funded an underground metro using LVT.
Only 7.5% of the UK is settled. The planning system is used as a means of ratcheting up land prices by creating an artificial shortage. LVT will claw back the artificially inflated land values. Relax planning and introduce LVT, eliminating income tax and the country will boom forever - and no bust.
Fred has failed to highlight that Brown ran on the same economic system that was before him and will come after. Blaming Brown is pretty pointless, when it's the underlying economic system that is wrong
To his credit, Brown did keep interest rates and inflation low making it easy for enterprise to run
For the free market to prosper a level playing field free from boom & busts and manipulation is needed. Geoism will do that in removing speculators from land and resources extracted from land
The free-market is just that. FREE from monopoly, manipulation and rigging.
In The UK LABOUR is rigged by wage policies and immigration to keep labour costs down.
LAND is rigged by planning (only 7.5% of the country is settled), monopoly (0.3% of the population owns 70% of the land). Profits form land values are unchecked with land owners creaming off.
The words "free market" are used in so many different ways by so many different people that you can't blame a guy for asking what you mean when you use the term.
I'm in favour of not only a land value tax but also making economic rent in general the basis of taxation. In my opinion, this must be done in tandem with banking & monetary reform as the shift in taxes will cause massive bank loses & the need for generalized debt cancellation. Debts that can't be paid, won't be paid.

Land Valuation Tax will sort much of this out.
