Is it just me or does Kiri not need to breathe?? (well she does but you get what I mean) I am currently learning this aria, and there is no way I can last all the melismatic coloratura passages at this tempo, without having to breath in between.
One has to think of Donna Elvira's place compared to the other characters. Donna Anna is clearly the more dramatic character. Donna Elvira is clearly mentally imbalanced and is all over the place emotionally. In this aria, she is resolving to forgive her traitor, and with it embraces the noble and calm demeanor of one who shows mercy. The melismatic passages, furthermore, show an internal battle of trying to control a potential emotional outburst. God Mozart is phenomenal!
Well, did you see her Elvira in ROH 1987 production? The one with Thomas Allen as Don Giovanni? She is feisty, intense, passionate and more there are clips around, search my channel and you will find a couple.
I think simplicity is the must in mozart. this is not perfect in every sense but is perfect in music making! I think is one of the greatest arias Kiri sang, and she could sing everything with this naturality, with no big drama ego, and it then real music happens.
I absolutely love Kiri Te Kanawa's version of this aria. Amazing. It's what I call a "sledgehammer performance", meaning it knocks you on your ass and when you get up, you really pay attention. And the rest of the cast from the movie is amazing to hear as well.
Callas forte is not Mozart I agree. Te Kanawa or Dessay are "technically better" are nearly "perfect" but their singing is not passionate. They sing not plays with her voice. Callas' vocie are dark are strong are passionate. Her singing have a "soul".
I love this exchange of opinions, and join by quoting my singing teacher. 'If a pianist cries, the keyboard will get slippery with all the tears', meaning to say that a singer should not get emotionally involved when singing, because the technical control will suffer. Both Callas and te Kanawa have control, but Callas is on the limit (and sometimes over).
This is stunning and for a time in the 70s and early 80s- Te Kanawa reigned supreme in this role- effortless and faultless technique.!!! Hard to find someone nowadays that can do what she could then.!!
Any know whether there is a live telecast of a sept. 1975 Paris Opera performance with almost the same cast but with Mackerras conducting??
@smnole thank you for your comment, it is so wonderful to find someone who shares your views - i completely agree with you: this movie, as well as ponelle's nozze, is the best rendition of mozart's opera!
have you seen zeffirelli's traviata and rosi's carmen? they are too unique

How can anyone say she doesn't bring enough emotion to her singing? The one who said she didn't compared this aria to "Dove Sono"--an aria she owns.

Do you want something better? Hear Callas
LeonardoEulero 3 years ago
Callas was great, but Mozart was not her forte and the very few Mozart items she recorded don't rank with her best.

Kiri's singing is not passionate here? ... What do you want ...blood all over the floor?
This Donna Elvira is definitive in my opinion.

This is one of this moments when I can give 5 stars and say to myself - This is not enough!!!
This is definitely my favourite "opera movie" just after other great "Le Nozze di Figaro" (Jean Ponelles staging)...
Beautiful music, great singers and staging!
Love this production!
Thanks to you for posting this here!!!!
By the way, is there any possibility to hear Don Giovanni's "Finc'han dal vino" aria on Youtube?? (Raimondi version is real masterpiece)
smnole 3 years ago 12
:)
There's several renditions of that aria on youtube but I don't think Raimondi's version is one of them.
