This is horrible, boring and very forgettable. Being that they influenced progressive metal I thought they would be worth listening to. Thinking was my mistake.
@CatterpillerStoner they were different even amongst the prog community, but not popular for no reason. as composers they are one in a billion. we do NOT remember Hendrix as the greatest guitarist because he could play best. today one in a thousand could play as well but never get famous. go out there and find 6,300,000 people who can write music this beautiful and unique and are not famous your claim to the superiority of your precious Dream Theater will be vaguely valid.
@MangoPudding21 Not that hard to write music "as beautiful as this". Three chords and a few other notes, then get a guy with a high voice. Bam, got this shit.
@CatterpillerStoner the chord progression is a pattern E, F#maj7 with an inversion of E, repeated once, then F#maj7, C#, C#min, D, A, E repeated once, then D, Emin repeated three times as verse, then F#min, A, G, A, G, D, C, G, D as a chorus. Last two blocks repeat twice. This is more complex than most classical music, which is mostly arpeggio, and much more than death metal. Even if it wasn't, it sounds better, which is a million time more important than difficulty in case you missed my point.
@MangoPudding21 Ok, I know I was being a dick about the whole "few chords and some notes" and thank you for giving that detailed description to make me realize that. but you have the wrong idea about death metal. Its not about difficulty at all. Its about vulgar and aggressive expression of emotions. I was not in any way comparing this to death metal either, that would be as stupid as making that whole "this sucks" comment. I apologize.
@CatterpillerStoner Its alright i'm sorry about that too. it's just that I get angry sometimes when people hate on music. I mean I might not agree with some people but at least I have the decency not to go and write shit on it. I didn't mean anything personal and I'm sure all music has its beauty. And you're entitled to your opinion, but there are still those of us out there who like "horrible, boring forgettable" music because we think it sounds good. let's agree to disagree
Seeing as how the top comments are people who love classic music, there will never be good modern music unless you want to find it. This song will mesh well to jump into the Flaming Lips "Going On" or "Do You Realize" if you want to try something new...
many years later and this gives me energy for my life ... thank you for existing peter gabriel that still follows my day to day with different but always sublime music as with new blood. that divine voice
When I was teen (now I'm 51), I loved these guies. And now I like tehm much more.. so many years later and the same fresh spirit in this lovely group (with PG, not the commercial stuff they went in afterwards...)...
Wow! I was 14, living in Germany when this song came out. I played it so much, my brothers locked it up! I saw Genesis in concert on 7-4-1976, 200 years of usa, in Eppelheim Germany! If you have never kissed a german fraulein with carpet crawlers playing, you have not lived!
@wendyabitz I lived in England when I was 14....service brat....I too played this until the vinyl melted...I am green that you got to see them live in that era....Hope you have a great memory !!
I was 15 when I first heard Genesis (thanks for my older brother's record collection ). I used to come home from school at lunch, lay on his bed with his headphones on, singing along, reading the lyrics and then have to put the record back carefully so he wouldn't know I'd been in. I listend to all the albums and was equally blown away by them all except The Lamb (although loved this track) Now I'm 45 this is my favourite album of all time & appreciate it more than I did at that age
@bru8boy8 OK, I looked up the singles charts for the week The Lamb.. got released. No 1: David Essex, Gonna make you a star. No. 3: Barry White, You're the first, the last, my everything. No. 5: Ken Boothe, Everything I own. No. 6: The Peppers, Pepper box. No. 7: Lydsey de Paul, No honestly. No. 8: The Rubettes, Juke box jive. No. 10: The Bay City Rollers, All of me loves all of you.
I can't work out what you're commenting on. My only comment on this track was to describe it as magnificent. I never commented on Genesis as a band at all.
@bru8boy8 Selective memory, methinks. Are you honestly saying Max Bygraves, Ken Dodd etc. were any more worthwhile than rubbish is today? As for good music today, I'm still buying it and listening to it, and some of it is magnificent in its own way. My tastes have drifted over the years, but the quality is still there.
Taster of my current favourite band: "watch?v=qt6E5yxy-uc&feature=related"
@theprofitview I'm old enough to remember when this album came out, and it's a magnificent track. But don't tell me there's no good music being made today, or that all the music back then was great, because neither is true. The cr*p that gets in the charts today is not so very different from the cr*p that got into the charts then, and if you dig a bit deper, there's great music around now as there was then.
@CaptainEJS Yep-Collins has a great voice, but he is mostly to blame for Genesis' deterioration into the pop garbage. Wish I had seen them when Gabriel was frontman
@ThEsOuNdSoLdIeR Dude. I agree with you, but was it really nescisary to say fuck so many times? There are kids watching this (I know this 'cus I'm only 11)
