That's a pretty amazing story which i believe to be true. I'm sure if Capcom was put in a situation where they had to pay you guys for "Drillman" then they would've came up with another character all together and scrapped Drillman. Awesome story though, I bet it kills you guys sometimes to have no proof of it.
@MixedNutsProductions I just got around to watching it. That letter stating that you follow the megaman series closely and because of that you knew the formula of the next robot boss they were going to design is hilarious. You were a little kid at the time, and they are making you out to be some kind of genius. Still, very cool to have a letter from Capcom and you to have been a part of one of the greatest video game series' of all time.
I believe you, dude. You know what's funny though?
My brother and I were sitting on the couch talking about stuff they should make and he said they should make sports snuggies. 2 minutes later the sports snuggie commercial came on.
Does not surprise me in the least bit that all you got was a game. sure it was pre-release but still. figured that they would have tried a better pay-off lol.
i believe your story! i have a similar story but i didnt mail my idea conserning mortal kombat 3 JAX fatality where he stomps on this opponent. i remember thinking this up with some other school kids back when MK2 was released to home consoles.
I was one of the kids you(Mike) were talking to at Gami today. This story is crazy though. It really sucks, but at the same time, you can say that you aided in Mega Man 4. Which is pretty sweet, even if you got screwed over big time.
Also you could've sold that Mega Man 4 cartridge (classified ad in the newspaper?) for well over $200 *easily* at the time.
Or if you're feeling daring, pop open the cartridge itself to analyze the game versus a 'regular' release and if it has anything different, you can sell it as a 'prototype' cartridge for a hefty sum of cash on ebay.
@jcdenton2k It was relatively close to release/launch, so I doubt the cartridge is rare or valuable. And keep in mind, to a kid who thinks $5 is a lot of money, getting a free video game was like scoring the lottery. So our feeble young minds took it without question.
@jcdenton2k Next Story Time, I'll show some of the 3 page letter Capcom sent with the game explaining the "coincidence" and telling our feeble 8 year old minds how to be game developers. It's quite hilarious.
Also, over Thanksgiving, we dug up the letter Capcom of America sent along with the free copy of the game. We'll show excerpts from the letter in a future Story Time. Definitely an interesting read.
@Spholx2 We did! There's a letter somewhere that we're going to try to dig up from Capcom that came with the game, saying how to start a career in game developing. Maybe in a future "Story Time."
This is awesome stuff. Video by video i keep loving you guys more and more. And i really like this "getting to know you" video. It's really cool. Keep up the good work hope you guys make it big. But if not you'll always have the loyalty of your fanbase.
@thriller2rayne This was a really cool comment. Thank you very much for the kind words and thank you for watching! We hope for some cool things to happen with our work.
Those extra copies of SMB1 are more useful than you might think. There are numerous NES homebrew releases out there on the internet, such as Solar Wars. If you have the hardware and software to burn the ROMs onto a cartridge, you can use the SMB1 cartridges for this task, and bingo! You can run the homebrew releases on a real NES. AFAIK, any NES cartridge with a 64K cart size should work.
@Tricob1974 Cool man, I'll keep that in mind! I do have a couple Homebrews like Battle Kid and Zelda Outlands. I just thought it was cool to have a crud load of Mario carts!
@MixedNutsProductions - Isn't Zelda Outlands a Zelda 1 hack? Zelda 1 uses 128K, not 64K. You'll need a cartridge with a bigger cart size for that one, like a second Zelda 1 cartridge. You can find more NES cart sizes by going to the Vault area of Vimm's Lair.
@Tricob1974 Somewhat. It uses the Zelda 1 engine, but it's pretty much its own game built from the ground up. You know a lot more about that stuff than I do, clearly! I bought that cart, didn't make it.
@brollicon Nah, they wanted to shove the coincidence under the rug as quick as possible. Who can blame them? And they essentially opened it back up through the Nintendo Power contest anyway.
Wow...so you guys are the reason we have drill man? Capcom really screwed you guys, a cool story tho. I also noticed a home brew and a reproduction cart on your shelf. Nice!
@Captain8Bit Well, my brother, but yeah, it was so bizarre and too coincidental. Just wish we weren't dumb kids and made copies of those drawings. But we never really realized what it meant or could've been until we were much older. Up until then, it was just "Score, free game!"
I wish my collection was more impressive, but the titles I have are the classics/essentials, or many of them mixed with what I had growing up. Pretty soon, I may start expanding the collection more.
@TheresPooOnMyShoe I miss it, too. I loved getting the newspaper print price sheets along with walking in and seeing a floor to ceiling wall of nearly every possible kind of NES game you could find.
those...green cartidage games. I know they were never officially released. ..how/were did you get them?

As much as I want to believe your story, without any proof it becomes basically believing your word.
Nope, not gonna happen...
