Where do you get the gall to fuck about with the work of other artists without their permission and in ways which they didn't intend? If I used something you'd made without your permission and which destroyed the effect you had strived to create you'd be the first to complain. If you can get the Quays' permission all well and good, but otherwise you are simply ruining somebody else's artwork.

You might as well decry Andy Warhol for derivatives based on art work of the campbell's soup company. The author cites the sources, would you silence his creativity and producers of derivative art everywhere based solely on your personal tastes? This work is well within Fair Use principles, so how about a little less pretension?

If you altered something I made and put it on youtube, then all is well. If you stole something of mine and published it in order to get rich, big problem. Art for art's sake is exactly what this is about. Art is fluid and evolutionary, and never stops at any one point. By your reckoning, the Brothers Quay are stealing from the author of the Epic of Gilgamesh and using it for their own visual purposes. Which they did. Which is perfectly fine as far as fair use goes. And makes great art.
