No offence, but the ps2 is overrated. It is very good, but it didn't do anything new (other than graphics) and unlike current consoles and the N64, it dose not have four controller ports.
Personally, N64 ranks top on my list. I mean mine still works, and has never had a "red ring of death." Goldeneye was also a defining title of the N64, but overall, you seem very informed.
@XannanTheTHUNDERER Each of these consoles had several games that could be considered defining, but if I had included them all the video would be too long. Youtube had the 10 minute time limit policy on these videos back then.
I'm old school. Give me a Nintendo and Sega Genesis, and I'm good. Although, I do like the Nintendo Gamecube as well. Those are the only three consoles I have ever liked. I know they might suck to other people because of PS3 and X-BOX 360, but that's just my opinion.

The Saturn was one of the worst consoles of all time, why is it on this list? If the Saturn hadn't been so terrible the Dreamcast 2 might exist. The Dreamcast not only had to make up for the poor sales figures of the Saturn, but also the stigma that it brought to the Sega brand, and still managed to sell more than the Saturn. And the Dreamcast was way ahead of it's time. If it had a DVD player, the PS2 would be in last place (for the 6th gen) XD

The Dreamcast was such an overlooked console which is very dissapointing considering when sega had the dreamcast they made sonic adventure 1 and 2 ,Ecco, Crazy Taxi, Sega Bass Fishing and many many more.. When i was little this was my firsst video gaming experiance when my grandma bought it for me i became obsessed with Sonic and to this day its still my favorite game!!! If only it had caught up witht he competition and made a dreamcast 2 How awesome would that Be!!!!

About your comment, the 360 and PS3 have definitely not revolutionized gaming. Both have evolved it further, but a revolution it is not. @AgentTBaggs Possibly, but motion controls weren't invented during this console generation. They've been around since the NES, and quite frankly, I still don't really care about them. I haven't bought either the Move or the Kinect and I'm not planning to as I feel they're both completely pointless.
PS2 is the highest selling console ever, by a lot. PS2 also has an extremely large, diverse, and quality game library + PSX compatibility. Personally not the console I would pick as #1 but the argument that it is the best is pretty easy to make.
On the other hand Dreamcast damn near bankrupted a company and N64 had its ass stomped by the much better Playstation.
The SNES was a great console, so you might have a point there.

I think some of your choices were subjective. I specially don't agree on no. 1 choice. NES actually sold much more than you think. You see, NES is only console in the world that have so many "pirate" versions made in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong..ect. There are so many of them that I cant count them on my fingers. All of these are NES clones. They are still selling in many poor countries.

I like the list, respect your decisions, but my decisions rely more on personal opinions that number and facts. In my opinion the best console is obviously PC of course, but not counting PC, I was born in 88' so my first "real" love of video games was the n64. Yeah the games were a little more light hearted than ps1 but the actual gameplay was more polished and refined. With games like Oc of time, gldneye,mario,banjo kazooie,jetforce gem,P-dark,starfox,dkong racing. you cant go wrong.

The one thing about video games that doesn't age well and as such it is also the least important thing in video games. Sony themselves only announce how many consoles have been shipped to retailers, so their numbers are not representative of how many consoles have been sold to consumers. So, yes you could be right, but then again you might not be.

PS2 sold more units because of its capability to play DVDs (in japan it was the cheapest DVD player and ironicly a console and even today DVD is more in interest than Blue Ray which makes PS3 ironicly a flow even if its the cheapest blueray player)

And sure, all the games on the current gen look STUNNING, SOME of them even deserve to be called good games, but back when these consoles came out their games were top notch in the visuals department. These consoles all brought greatness to the table, and although I love my PS3, 360 and Wii, they don't deserve to be on this list.. yet.

Why the N64 didn't get so many buys.
1: The use of cartridges was a bit outdated since Sony and Sega moved onto discs.
2: The Atari Jaguar was also a 64 bit console that failed big time. That made the N64
look like it was going to suck.
3: Mostly it was kids who bought the system.
That was a huge setback since N64 was a well known kiddie system.

@jacketsj Please read the text properly before complaining. I said that the NES is Nintendo's best selling home console, not the best selling home console of all time. The Wii has since passed the NES in sales, becoming Nintendo's best selling home console. Also, after this video was made Nintendo's DS has become the best selling console of all time.

I think some of your choices were subjective. I specially don't agree on no. 1 choice. NES actually sold much more than you think. You see, NES is only console in the world that have so many "pirate" versions made in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong..ect. There are so many of them that I cant count them on my fingers. All of these are NES clones. They are still selling in many poor countries.

By number of units sold? That would be kind of pointless really. The sales numbers are for the official Nintendo version of the NES alone. It's absolutely impossible to count sales of all the pirated version of different consoles.

I like the list, respect your decisions, but my decisions rely more on personal opinions that number and facts. In my opinion the best console is obviously PC of course, but not counting PC, I was born in 88' so my first "real" love of video games was the n64. Yeah the games were a little more light hearted than ps1 but the actual gameplay was more polished and refined. With games like Oc of time, gldneye,mario,banjo kazooie,jetforce gem,P-dark,starfox,dkong racing. you cant go wrong.

great video, to all the people bigging up xbox360 and ps3, you're probably 13 years old and didn't get to appreciate all the previous consoles. Give it 10 years and you'll be the ones bitching at people for bigging up ps5 and xbox1080 or whatever it will be called then. I whole hartedly agree with all of this list. Golden Eye for N64 should have been a defining game but then again its on par with mario 64 and ocarina of time (which some consider the best video game ever made). Good job!

@manrat122 The only thing that is decidedly better about current generation games is the graphics. The one thing about video games that doesn't age well and as such it is also the least important thing in video games. The things that do age well however are great gameplay, story, music, characters and athmosphere. Games that had those 5,10 or even 20 years ago in most cases still do.

@simog1997 That depends on the source. Some sources say the PS2 has sold over 150 million while others claim it's around 142 million. Sony themselves only announce how many consoles have been shipped to retailers, so their numbers are not representative of how many consoles have been sold to consumers. So, yes you could be right, but then again you might not be.

the Dreamcast was a good console but it lacked regional protection as well as backup protection. people were able to play their own pirated versions of games and that's why Sega lost money when the Dreamcast came out. it's still a very good console and it had some really great games. also the first console to go online. Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Shemnue, Crazy Taxi, the Sega Sports 2K games were just one of the many great games for the Dreamcast. Soul Calibur was one of the best.

PS2 sold more units because of its capability to play DVDs (in japan it was the cheapest DVD player and ironicly a console and even today DVD is more in interest than Blue Ray which makes PS3 ironicly a flow even if its the cheapest blueray player)

And sure, all the games on the current gen look STUNNING, SOME of them even deserve to be called good games, but back when these consoles came out their games were top notch in the visuals department. These consoles all brought greatness to the table, and although I love my PS3, 360 and Wii, they don't deserve to be on this list.. yet.
