Anyway, this episode was probably set to make Dr. Cox look like a jerk for thinking like that, because it's a negative mindset in a sense. Like a "there's no point of life" mindset. And Laverne was just simply being the optimistic voice in this episode.

Whether or not you believe in God, things do happen for a reason, and it's a good way to look at things. (For example, things in people's pasts shape who they become in the future)
