You said it had 256mb of RAM to store applications but an 8 gig disk. Were you meaning to say that the unit has 8 gigs of disk space but only 256mb is available to the user?
The specs do say 256mb of RAM and an 8 gig disk, so is that not what you actually get?
I got one for dhristmas but i realised it was the 70b thats not be released till this month it says it has 512ram and a 1.2ghz proccesor and 1024x600 pixels on the box, how have i already got it when its not been released yet??

A home launcher installed as .apk like Launcher Pro is always slower that the one installed in the system itself. If you could root the android and install a system version via recovery that would also be as fast as the standard system launcher.
Funny, This is a better unit but I already spent this on their older one that they abandoned that can do anything flash anymore they just abandoned their customers for all Gen 7 units and made new ones that have foyo and new flash support. They are not a good company.
The buttonless design of the Archos 7o will put it in a good place to receive Ice Cream Sandwich update when it comes out.... Coincidence or by design? Who knows...
The kickstand does't stay properly up after using it for a while and sometimes I get a whitescreen after it goes of standby. Those are the only complaints I have. Besides that this is a very good device for the price. It does everything it's supposed to do and it is still running fine after 6 months of intensive usage. Battery live still fine even when running it at 1GHz all the time.

Hello Ed (Digital Digest)... I am having a hard time finding the Google voice app that you have on the Archos 70. I have the Archos 101 and I have the Google App Market on it. When I search for Google Voice it shows several other voice apps that I don't want. When I do a regular Google search on my desktop computer (not the tablet) I can't seem to find any links.... Can you help me out and post a link to the app???
Thanks! Your reviews have been most helpful. I appreciate how thorough you've been. It took me about week, but I've finally settled on the 250GB model. I came to the realization that even though I would like to have the best of the best, it's not practical-- at least not for what I'm going to use it for. Minor internet surfing, movies, and comics. So, the Archos 70 suits me perfectly.
Hello, nice review. You have reviewed this and the HDD version. Did you notice a difference in Battery runtime? do you have any figures on how battery performs?
@Luis543219 Its really a matter of what you plan to do with the tablet. If you want to carry all your content you need the 250. If you just plan to surf mostly get the 8.
I'd like to here aidio book on this devive (Mp3). I wonder if I stop in the middle of the chapter today, then comeback again tomorrow It will start where I left off?

I have a question your mentioning the internal memory is low I am concerned about this as I am am about to purchase the 70 model. I am not sure if the 8gb will be enough internal with the 256mb of ram what is your take since I am new tothe android market. you mention rooting is this now able to?
I've got the A70. RAM and app storage space are the biggest downfalls. Even though it says 256mb ram, you only have MAXIMUM 100mb free at any given time and most of the time it's much lower, which means apps will not run in the background and the browser will crash with several tabs opened.
Flash was supported and may never come - the current unofficial flash solution crashes 50% of the time...
i'm interested in the archos 70 & 101. Besides the screen size, is there a reason to choose one over the other? I heard lots of complaints about the viewing angles on 101.
Also, the battery is not removeable, so are they basically worthless once the batteries die?

@Frekas9291 That is why the 8gb flash unit has a microsd card slot to expand storage for an additional 32gb. The 250gb does not have expandable storage because clearly storage expansion is not an issue when you have 250gb of space. Thanks for watching!
@Frekas9291 The difference is that the 8GB is flash memory whilst the 250GB is a standard hard drive you would get in a laptop/netbook. Flash memory is almost instant in comparison to the standard hard drive but it is more expensive for the more space you want (a 32GB micro SDHC card is currently ~£55 on amazon) On a tablet I would have thought that the flash memory would be best as it won't get damaged by movement and the apps are so small it shouldn't matter.
@Frekas9291 The price has not only gone down massively since this was made, and the 250gb one is easily affordable. Why not get the extra space, you could always use it.
Hey, evryone, i'm new to androids and I live in Australia where the archos 70 hasen't been released yet (i think). I was wondering if i bought 1 from the US, would it be compatible with Australian stuff (eg: timezones, and stuff like that)????
@thickindathighs9 I am guessing you did not read the post I replied to, there is no tablet with a thumbstick even available let alone with ppl in line on amazon. I am assuming you just responded without reading the original post by nr1029.
I was wrestling with iPad vs Nook (rooted) vs Archos 70. This review just sold me on the archos plus all of the solid reviews I read on Amazon. I'll get the iPad for the wife ;-P. I do have a question. You may not have had the chance to check out the 250Gb version but given the option, would you still get the 8gb? I tend to shy from spinning drives in a portable device but intend to try to run a virtual machine from it in hd mode (like a portable drive). Thoughts?
I love this review. I just received my Archos 70 Flash version today and I am already impressed with it. Does anybody have a link to the google android app hack? If so please respond
@TheDigitalDigest I have a really good question about Archos 70, now on internet HTML5 starts to take over, or it will be taking over soon, and my question is: does Archos 70 support HTML5??? or is there a plug-in or app for it to support it?????? if u dont know can u ask some other people or send a message to Archos team or something :) PLEAASE ANSWER, really interested THANK YOU :)
I am new to Android devices. I was wondering, does usb host come in handy? If it does, Is it a smart thing to get archos 101, just because it has better usb host? (From what I heard, archos 101 can power up most of devices like external harddrive while archos 70 is really limited to mouse and keyboard)
For starters your task killer doesn't help with speed at all. Sure it does temporarily, but it lags soon after as Android re-loads apps into the memory. Froyo really did away with the need for a task killer with its JIT compiling.
hello! I've recently purchased the tablet from currys.com. Can't wait for christmas to give this baby a go! Good you possibly post a video on how to install launcher pro + (how did you get the Android market on the device itself?), I'm not very technical so the forums don't really make a great deal of sense! If you could possibly post a video on how to mod/hack the archos 70 IT that would be really helpful!!
archos is not good .....it's freaking awesome i'm gonna buy one in few weeks.
i'm gonna buy the a70 with the 250 gb hd.
great review man ..................i was gonna buy the galaxy tab but it look's like the archos much better with a blow mind price. thump up..........dude
As attractive as this tablet may seem, for the same price you can get a netbook that's over 4 times as powerful. My advice is to hold out another year until Android ready for tablets. At the moment it's still sluggish, especially on a device with 256MB RAM. You'll find yourself constantly using task killer. If you want a tablet now, get an ipad - £150 more - much better user experience on an OS that's made for tablets.
Oh, and the magic 2.2 upgrade has made things worse it would seem.
@ChrisWalker2k I understand your criticism of the A70 however I disagree with your line of thinking. The A70 isn't competing with the netbook segment. A full touch screen experience is fundamentally different in every regard especially running 2.2. Users like yourself don't see the utility so you will be more inclined to opt for a netbook. My Sony P still has it's use but Android tablets are better suited for browsing and media. Oh and Froyo is running great on both my A70 and 101.
@TheDigitalDigest You make a fair point about the different markets. But I'm very much aware of the touch screen experience as a current owner of an iPhone, previous owner of an HTC Desire. And at some point I really want a tablet, but personally I think it's too early in the game and a lot of people who spend money now will end up regretting it next year when tablet technology explodes. Devices like this one, and the Galaxy tab can't hack it yet. Certainly far from silky smooth.
@DanePax Thanks. Always nice to hear! Yes, we would all like that screen real estate back but it's a minor gripe at best in my opinion. I'm thankful one company seems to have gotten an affordable tab with a complete experience to market in a timely fashion, even though its out of stock somewhat permanently. 2011 should bring great tabs to the marketplace! Thanks again for watching and subscribing.
great review, definitely weighing this versus the Nook color (now that it has been rooted). Android 2.2 just dropped on the Archos site which makes this one even more attractive.
@tutorialmasterhelper no, iTunes is an Apple product. Similar products for music management aren't really yet available. Apps are downloaded from the Android Market.
@dalaxkid as far as i know this has an OTA (over-the-air) update so it's totally wireless. Yes, it does all those things and more. Yes, it does youtube as do all Android devices. "Newest" tablet is pretty impossible to define as there's tons of them coming out all the time so it's not a matter of picking a tablet v1, v2 or v3 as with Apple devices since there are dozens of manufacturers. Hope this helps.
Good review, but 04:35 before you actually pick it up, I'm sure many would have changed videos by then. People wanna see hands on, not a static picture for over 4.5 mins. Maybe a mixture of hands on and explaination would have been better.
@wearecity Thanks! I appreciate good constructive criticism and I think if you watch some of my latest reviews you will see that I have gotten more hands on. The bottom line is that I want techies and non alike to be able to enjoy and come away with more than what the average reviews that are floating all around youtube have to offer. hopefully that comes across in my work.
@TheDigitalDigest No problem, I see you are getting quicker at doing rather than talking lol. At least you explain things clearly unlike a lot who replace talking with loud music instead and no explaination.
BTW when you spoke of typing on 7" vs the 10", did you mean to say Landscape when you said portrait? I think you got those terms the wrong way around.
Why do some of these Archos 7 inch tablets have "Archos 7 internet tablet" and some have "Archos 70 internet tablet" ? In other words, some have "7" on them and some have "70". Look at pics and videos online, there are two variations of this device. Can anyone tell me what the diference is? is one an earlier release than the other? Android 2.1 vs 2.2 maybe? Any clues guys? thanks
@gamesandshite The Archos 7 is an old model tablet, one of the first and the worst one. This new Archos 70 is great, Archos 101 could be even better though.
Thanks for that but you missed my question. Im talking about the 'Brand New' Archos Internet tablet. Some of the video reviews show it as having a "7" on it and some showing a "70" on it... BOTH the new android 2.2 tablet. SO my question is why are there two different versions of this same Internet tablet?
@gamesandshite The two NEW Archos tablets are the Archos 70 which boasts a 7-inch screen and the Archos 101 which has a 10-inch screen. Those are the only new Archos tablets.
Outside of the screen size difference, how would you compare the Archos with the Viewsonic G Tablet that you reviewed? I am trying to decide whether I would like to get the G Tablet or wait for the Archos 101. Any advantages to either one? Thank you for the review!
Hi, on the 10 inch tab you get a Full sized USB port, would there be any way to use the micro usb on this in any way like the full size on or is it just for date to and from a PC ? Thanks

You forgot about the SMB capabilities of this device. You can make the device be part of your SMB (Windows) network. That is, you can easily stream Videos, load PDFs, stream Audio, etc... directly from the network. You don't need to load individual videos/audios onto your 8GB drive everytime. Ofcourse, only useful in a home-network. SMB support is also there on Linux and MacOSX operating systems too.
Also, it has .MKV and .XVID support out of the box.
@CHRISTOPHER343434 The Gal Tab is literally twice the price of this device so that alone makes the comparison bogus. The Sammy tab has a better screen, faster cpu and more ram and internal storage but I don't think it warrants the inflated price point. Archos has done a good job here. If the consumer is going to pay between 5-800 for a tablet, I think it should be more powerful than a high end cell phone. One of the key reasons I don't care for the iPad and think Archos got this one right.
Best review I've seen by far. I am planning on getting the Archos 70 by November 19. I've heard that the Archos 70 will restock on its website on Monday and on other websites. Is this true? And do you think this outperforms the Samsung Galaxy Tab? Thanks
NOT for me i can get the tab 7.0plus 16 GB for 50 bucks more

@windowlicked wrong, it sold out in most places where I tried to buy it from last week. I am just now able to buy from amazon. This is very popular.

Thoughts?

After upgrade to Android 2.2 Froyo, CPU max frequency is "locked" on 800 MHz
this was confirmed by Archos. They say "we have set max CPU frequency to 800MHz in for better batery's life" That's sucks ! I't laggy now

I am new to Android devices. I was wondering, does usb host come in handy? If it does, Is it a smart thing to get archos 101, just because it has better usb host? (From what I heard, archos 101 can power up most of devices like external harddrive while archos 70 is really limited to mouse and keyboard)

Nevermind, looked like ADW Launcher, LP is cool, too
hengineer 1 year ago
By the way, I really like that you put ADW Launcher right on there ;)
hengineer 1 year ago
For starters your task killer doesn't help with speed at all. Sure it does temporarily, but it lags soon after as Android re-loads apps into the memory. Froyo really did away with the need for a task killer with its JIT compiling.
hengineer 1 year ago

It's a really shame that the camera its on the front, that exclude augmented reality apps like layar.
Would be nice to have a rotating camera on the edge, so you can use the same camera for all purposes :D
taeteck 1 year ago
As attractive as this tablet may seem, for the same price you can get a netbook that's over 4 times as powerful. My advice is to hold out another year until Android ready for tablets. At the moment it's still sluggish, especially on a device with 256MB RAM. You'll find yourself constantly using task killer. If you want a tablet now, get an ipad - £150 more - much better user experience on an OS that's made for tablets.
Oh, and the magic 2.2 upgrade has made things worse it would seem.
ChrisWalker2k 1 year ago
@ChrisWalker2k I understand your criticism of the A70 however I disagree with your line of thinking. The A70 isn't competing with the netbook segment. A full touch screen experience is fundamentally different in every regard especially running 2.2. Users like yourself don't see the utility so you will be more inclined to opt for a netbook. My Sony P still has it's use but Android tablets are better suited for browsing and media. Oh and Froyo is running great on both my A70 and 101.
TheDigitalDigest 1 year ago 3
@TheDigitalDigest You make a fair point about the different markets. But I'm very much aware of the touch screen experience as a current owner of an iPhone, previous owner of an HTC Desire. And at some point I really want a tablet, but personally I think it's too early in the game and a lot of people who spend money now will end up regretting it next year when tablet technology explodes. Devices like this one, and the Galaxy tab can't hack it yet. Certainly far from silky smooth.

DanePax 1 year ago
@DanePax Thanks. Always nice to hear! Yes, we would all like that screen real estate back but it's a minor gripe at best in my opinion. I'm thankful one company seems to have gotten an affordable tab with a complete experience to market in a timely fashion, even though its out of stock somewhat permanently. 2011 should bring great tabs to the marketplace! Thanks again for watching and subscribing.

Im new to these tablets so i have some questions.
1) in order to get version 2.2 do i upgrade it like on the ipod
2)it can play games, listen to music, watch movies, videochat, go on the web?
3)can you go on youtube with this if not when will you be able to?
4) what is the newest android tablet on the market as of today
5)lastly would you reccomend this tablet
Thanks for your help
dalaxkid 1 year ago
@dalaxkid as far as i know this has an OTA (over-the-air) update so it's totally wireless. Yes, it does all those things and more. Yes, it does youtube as do all Android devices. "Newest" tablet is pretty impossible to define as there's tons of them coming out all the time so it's not a matter of picking a tablet v1, v2 or v3 as with Apple devices since there are dozens of manufacturers. Hope this helps.

@dalaxkid esaedvik pretty much covered everything. Your last question is the most important though and my answer is yes. Thanks for watching!

Good review, but 04:35 before you actually pick it up, I'm sure many would have changed videos by then. People wanna see hands on, not a static picture for over 4.5 mins. Maybe a mixture of hands on and explaination would have been better.
wearecity 1 year ago
@wearecity Thanks! I appreciate good constructive criticism and I think if you watch some of my latest reviews you will see that I have gotten more hands on. The bottom line is that I want techies and non alike to be able to enjoy and come away with more than what the average reviews that are floating all around youtube have to offer. hopefully that comes across in my work.
TheDigitalDigest 1 year ago
@TheDigitalDigest No problem, I see you are getting quicker at doing rather than talking lol. At least you explain things clearly unlike a lot who replace talking with loud music instead and no explaination.

Any clues guys? thanks
gamesandshite 1 year ago
@gamesandshite The Archos 7 is an old model tablet, one of the first and the worst one. This new Archos 70 is great, Archos 101 could be even better though.
codyjoe2450 1 year ago
@codyjoe2450
Thanks for that but you missed my question. Im talking about the 'Brand New' Archos Internet tablet. Some of the video reviews show it as having a "7" on it and some showing a "70" on it... BOTH the new android 2.2 tablet. SO my question is why are there two different versions of this same Internet tablet?
gamesandshite 1 year ago
@gamesandshite The two NEW Archos tablets are the Archos 70 which boasts a 7-inch screen and the Archos 101 which has a 10-inch screen. Those are the only new Archos tablets.

Outside of the screen size difference, how would you compare the Archos with the Viewsonic G Tablet that you reviewed? I am trying to decide whether I would like to get the G Tablet or wait for the Archos 101. Any advantages to either one? Thank you for the review!

@PattarXyP You can use a USB micro male to full size female adapter and it will work as a USB Host for external storage or compatible peripherals.

Nice review.

TheDigitalDigest 1 year ago
@CHRISTOPHER343434 The Gal Tab is literally twice the price of this device so that alone makes the comparison bogus. The Sammy tab has a better screen, faster cpu and more ram and internal storage but I don't think it warrants the inflated price point. Archos has done a good job here. If the consumer is going to pay between 5-800 for a tablet, I think it should be more powerful than a high end cell phone. One of the key reasons I don't care for the iPad and think Archos got this one right.
TheDigitalDigest 1 year ago
Best review I've seen by far. I am planning on getting the Archos 70 by November 19. I've heard that the Archos 70 will restock on its website on Monday and on other websites. Is this true? And do you think this outperforms the Samsung Galaxy Tab? Thanks
