However, the 3 characteristics you listed are known as the Macdonald Triad, and they are not present in all serial killers. Animal cruelty and firesetting have been associated with sociopathy, true, but not bed wetting. And even so, most sociopaths do not become serial killers.

Where is/was his Dad? We never hear about his father. That's one thing that was missing from his life: a father figure. I don't get it. He killed his grandmother when he was 15 and they locked him up. Why did they let him out? Had he still been in jail, these young girls (and his Mom) would still be alive!! How come some people do life for killing people, while he gets out?? Makes no sense to me!

@CindaNJ He was 14 when he killed his grandparents. He was put in a psych ward for juveniles and when he was 21 he was released.

@CindaNJ His dad divorced and moved to California as he remained in Montana w/ his mom whom he hated. As a young boy he sexually molested his sister, tortured animals, and was very violent in school. He ran away to California but his dad had remarried and had a baby, and he told him he was too much to handle and sent him to his grandparents' farm.

One my favorite serial killers, what I really enjoy is how he used his own mothers severed head for oral sex right before he used it as a dartboard, I mean he used his own mothers head as a fucking dartboard! I can't even picture that it's so incredibly insane. He also cut his mothers vocal cords out and flushed them down the garbage disposal which is another aspect I love about his murders.

the surprising thing is that he SEEMS to think like a totally normal being. the way he reviews his actions just in the same way that you would think anyone else would do. he knew back then that it was horrible, his victims innocent, he even seems to have respect to life. and yet he killed and post-mortem sexually abused people whenever he wanted. he even beheaded his mother and used her head for oral sex. and the same person is sitting there, talking like a normal and nice guy. so scary.

@staxstix yeah that is crazy. he scored a 136 on an IQ test, very high, mensa (high IQ) society, 98th %, he could have been a lawyer or dr or professor w that IQ, hes at the mental hospital in vacaville CA. serial killers are wolf in sheeps clothing @ times, insanity legal term, psychotic = not in touch w reality. bundy, alcala, ramirez knew diff between right and wrong, but I think they enjoyed killing bc of its power, but they're more than just sociopaths, Id say yes theyre crazy and evil

I've never ever felt sympathy or want to understand or agree with serial killers reasons but Edmund is the only one I've come across that talks about it in such a manner of fact way. Others talk about God or refuse to speak or plain lie about it all, he's just so upfront.. it's weird.

@jaleach123 It's the combination of above-average IQ, psychopathy, and sadism that makes a serial killer. Do you delight in the pain of others? Do you have no moral compunctions about doing so?
Of course the vast majority of sadistic, intelligent, psychopaths don't become serial killers. There are theories abound that attempt to explain the catalyst, but little or no concrete evidence pointing one way or another.
Hopefully neurologists will, in time, be able to pin down a biological cause.

Wrong, there is no exact and precise recipe that makes up a serial killer, Kemper, Bundy and most serial killers have above average IQ yes you are right here but take Gary Ridgway, he evaded authorities much much longer than most of the high IQ killers yet he has low IQ even milgly retarded, the only definitive characteristics they have in common is bed wetting beyond the age of 12, fire starting in childhood and cruelty to animals againg in childhood.

@ralutjohn You're right that there is no precise recipe, and I shouldn't have insinuated "high I.Q." as being prevalent in all serial killers. I should have written that above average I.Q is COMMON among serial killers.
However, the 3 characteristics you listed are known as the Macdonald Triad, and they are not present in all serial killers. Animal cruelty and firesetting have been associated with sociopathy, true, but not bed wetting. And even so, most sociopaths do not become serial killers.
