At our commander's calls and other functions we usually have the chaplain direct a prayer... I usually just stand at attention thru the prayer (since before the prayer is the national anthem so I was at attention to begin with). I figured the respectul thing to do is to stay at attention since the commander hasn't called us at ease yet...
I work for a county in S. GA. and we all have to take our hats off and bow while someone blesses our work week with a southern baptist or church of god prayer every monday morning.

The atheist has no reason to care about it within the relationship otherwise.

If you don't believe in the existence, then it's imaginary. To many atheists, the Christian version of God is exactly an imaginary friend, nothing less.

I am not an atheist, exactly, but I am not one who follows the christian god either...I follow Native American beliefs...I don't really know if the spirits are real or not, but THAT doesn't matter. The reason I follow it is because I am a Cherokee, PLUS I have ALWAYS believed that Nature is everything. I am a christian and I don't believe in praying in public. Prayer is a language of the heart so it is possible to pray without making it obvious to other people around you that you are praying. So yes I am against group prayer especially in a public school. I would even go so far to say that I want to take the 10 commandments off of every court room wall in america. There should be no religious literature or articles in a court room.

I continually find that in this age of enlightenment and tolerance, atheists are more intolerant of Christianity than Christians are intolerant to atheism. Why, what used to be a Christian nation has so quickly become a pagan playground, that real history does not even matter anymore to this culture. For those of us who are Christians, it would seem that prayer is one of the few things that we can still do in public without being screamed at by everyone for offending their "freedoms".
I occasionally accompany my wife to Mass (on special occasions) and I just withdraw and let them get on with it. Thankfully nobody has ever had the affront to tell me off for it.
I've often kept my head up when others have been heads-bowed. And it is like being in some kind of forbidden space. You could dance around there while everyone wasn't looking.
I am a Christian and I agree with you on this one. It is quite ridiculous for Christians to expect someone who doesn't believe what we believe to pray with us. I agree that you are being respectful by being quiet if a group is praying. People shouldn't expect anything else from you.
I can't believe that people were blaming God for cancer, given the fact that what Christians believe is that there is suffering and death on earth because of our rebellion against God.
Matthew 6:5 says, "...do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues [to be seen]." When you think about this verse, it seems like the best option is to not pray in public, but what this says is to avoid ostentatious displays like those of the Pharisees who made it obvious to everyone that they were praying, showing they cared more for what people thought than God. Private prayer is preferreable, but public prayer is Godly provided it's not self indulgent

At our commander's calls and other functions we usually have the chaplain direct a prayer... I usually just stand at attention thru the prayer (since before the prayer is the national anthem so I was at attention to begin with). I figured the respectul thing to do is to stay at attention since the commander hasn't called us at ease yet...

BTW, I can name 20 couples that I know of that are Christian and atheists. The intolerance would ONLY come if the religious person tried to push their beliefs on the non-religious partner. The atheist has no reason to care about it within the relationship otherwise.

If you don't believe in the existence, then it's imaginary. To many atheists, the Christian version of God is exactly an imaginary friend, nothing less.

I am not an atheist, exactly, but I am not one who follows the christian god either...I follow Native American beliefs...I don't really know if the spirits are real or not, but THAT doesn't matter. The reason I follow it is because I am a Cherokee, PLUS I have ALWAYS believed that Nature is everything. In other words, that humanity is NOT "supposed to be" the dominant species as most religions would have you believe. ANYWAY, I LOVE your videos, and I happily understand. (God=Santa for adults ^^)

I am a christian and I don't believe in praying in public. Prayer is a language of the heart so it is possible to pray without making it obvious to other people around you that you are praying. So yes I am against group prayer especially in a public school. I would even go so far to say that I want to take the 10 commandments off of every court room wall in america. There should be no religious literature or articles in a court room.

He has several varieties of dark beer that he loves. That is what is in the mug. 2012 cant be disproven yet because it hasnt happened. Take comfort in knowing that there are so many different conspiracy theories about it however that nobody knows what will happen. Only one of those theories could possibly be correct, or all of them could be wrong. Some of the theories are even positive in nature. :) I have panic and anxiety disorder as well. I continually find that in this age of enlightenment and tolerance, atheists are more intolerant of Christianity than Christians are intolerant to atheism. Why, what used to be a Christian nation has so quickly become a pagan playground, that real history does not even matter anymore to this culture. For those of us who are Christians, it would seem that prayer is one of the few things that we can still do in public without being screamed at by everyone for offending their "freedoms".

As far as I can tell, "Christ (the guy 'Christians' are suppose to mimic)" always LIFTED UP HIS EYES before praying [Jhn 11:41, 17:1].
On one occasion, he FELL ON HIS FACE while BEGGING (god) FOR HIS LIFE TO BE SPARED [Mt 26:39].

Vs6 does say: "But YOU, when YOU pray ... ENTER INTO THY CLOSET, and when thou hast SHUT THEY DOOR, PRAY to thy Father which is IN SECRET ...
Maybe they INTERPRET this to mean: CLOSE YOUR EYES & BOW YOUR HEAD. But how do they know he didn't mean a LITERAL PLACE OF PRIVACY?

Matthew 6:5 says, "...do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues [to be seen]." When you think about this verse, it seems like the best option is to not pray in public, but what this says is to avoid ostentatious displays like those of the Pharisees who made it obvious to everyone that they were praying, showing they cared more for what people thought than God. Private prayer is preferreable, but public prayer is Godly provided it's not self indulgent

I just wanted to say there are certain things you can do to be respectful, like standing up when pledging. and listening to your iPod wouldn't be one. bowing your head with others would be one in my opinion.

I wouldn't do it because that is considered "idolatry" in my religion. haha. i know what you are trying to say. and that is a good argument. and I'd say, if your religion forbids you from attending a prayer, no one can say anything to that. For instance, if my country, South Korea, had a law that forbade me from joining the pledge or even standing up for the pledge, I would obey the law, instead of going with the flow. But aren't you an atheist yourself that think we talk to an imaginary friend?
