Miyazaki Dont Die!!! Your an awesome Guy you made me love spirited away more that any movie in the world!!! What will happen when your gone??!!! What will happen to all the good movies!!! You have Amazing Talen Miyazaki!!! You should really make the best of it!!!
It's hard for me to re-watch miyazaki's films xD the emotions i get are just to vivid, too real, making me wana be in the movie, or examine if parts of my life shared qualities of his films' "stories." He should win tons more awards
@tongofication, got to the truth about a lot more bad effects being published in CGI. Simply because it's cheaper, and allows less dedicated producers to complete an animation. You get the same thing in all trades, signwriting for example. The technical side of CGI, the model making, takes a huge amount of expertise to get right and is not often at fault. The 'post render effects', where some quick cheats are used with bad taste, often wreck the animation.
So there will be a higher percentage of good work with traditional animation than with computer. I think that if Ghibli used computer animation, they just did the same exact thing they always do, but on computer, it would yield the same results that their traditional animation would. There doesn't seem to be much of a difference to me. I'm not saying Ghibli should stop using traditional animation. It's what they've always used, it's what they know. Anyway, that's my thoery on all of this.
Which may make you think that computer animation is the cause, when it's actually completely up the artists/animators. It's not like since you use a pencil, instead of a photoshop brush, that the characters you draw will automatically be better looking, more interesting, and more relatable. Then, since traditional animation is much more difficult, only the most passionate animators who can dedicate themselves to it will use it, since the bad animators wouldn't have the patience to use it.
Then, the thing about "drawing on a computer removes far more feeling from the art": I think that(this also relates to the efficiency of computer animation), since animation on the computer is easier, there is a lot more computer animation than traditional. Plus, on the computer, there are "shortcuts" an animator can take, such as tweening, which a lot of cartoons use now. So, that means there's going to be more crappy stuff with computer animation.
oh, of course it can! but i meant the feelings of the artist it self when he draw it on paper rather than on computer. Sometimes exaggerated posses or quick motions of an animator reflects his inner feelings, where on computer it's more mechanic. But, it's not a fact, just MY opinion when it comes to animation of course.
computer technology has really become amazing lately...that's why it makes me sad that he is at his old age. imagine the kind of work he could have done.
i still dont understand why that use hand made animation...sure its not really a big difference than drawing it on the computer but...isnt it alot faster?
@animdesk of course it can. Up? Wall-E? Kung-fu Panda 2? (which I cried, twice). It's all about good storytelling. If Ghibli's storytelling is its heart, then its 2D usage will be its body. Besides, Ghibli does use CGI: Mononoke Hime, this film, and Hauru no Ugoku Shiro, but sparingly and at appropriate sequences. The studio knows how to use the best of both worlds, and at the right time.
I'm a little confused by some of the comments here. May someone explain to me how paper animation faster than computer animation? It doesn't make sense to me. On the computer, mistakes can be fixed far easier, you can instantly play back your animation to see if it looks right, plus many other small things that make it seem just a little more efficient.
@raddada100 I think the central issue is the direction of the movie :D studio ghibli has been consistent in gathering the viewer's emotions aside from the entertainment ;o which is a direction that disney is trying to get onto now, --because "anime" and "T-Anime" is getting much more popular lol
@AnalogueAbsynth I'm no enthusiast for either side here. I dont think either format is more powerful or in any way 'better'. I believe it's very shallow to judge work on the tools used. Yes, 3d can feel very cold and lack a charm. However, that's not due to the medium, it's due to the artist. I've seen just as many hand drawn animations that were cold and lacked a certain charm.
@animdesk eghh come on don't go nutts, plus some of miyazaki's films used computers i love hand drawn animation as much as the next guy, but I think Miyazaki describes it best, he said with the computer something subtle is lost, cg is not better or worse, they are simply different styles, that said Hayao Miyazak's works are undoubtedly better
@animdesk Auch... that pretty harsh.. I think is harder to do it in Cg animation.. but taking in consideration that with 2d animation specially anime the animation is so subtle I'd say people give it more though.. however.. take a look at pixar, In my opinion they're doing a great job there's some of the best animation I've ever seen there.
@bongo2425 yes, pixar and other friends does indeed make amazing 3d animation. However, I get the feeling that for every new movie (in 3D) they release, it is nothing but showing how great their software has become in the disguise of a story. Every 3D movie has a new fx (Water, smoke, fire..etc) more sophisticated renderings, more polygons, muscle control. But sometimes fact that when someone sit and draw all of it by hand (well, not all obviously) gives more life and emotion than cgi ever will.
@wizzra That could be true only if all 2d animators had brains...unfortunately that is not the case. 3d has just as much a chance to convey emotion as anything else if the animator is decent. I trust that you are a retard, btw.
@animdesk I disagree. CG animation can portray feelings. Just look at the best Pixar stuff. 2D animation just looks better though and is more fun to do. In my opinion
@RainFTWs drawing on a computer removes far more feeling from the art, it looks crap, it's like the difference between old pokemon, the first pokemon and that new shitty looking fake pokemon they have now, it just doesn't look the same, especially with manga, people can tell the difference instantly, because drawing on the computer just looks fake and has no style.
@RainFTWs Also, Miyazaki's films arent really "Anime" or "Animation" alone, but more of a higher level of film, Transcended Anime maybe, (T-Anime) where your emotions are captured despite some feelings of "can it be real?"-ness, those kinds of themes that make you ask if what you're feeling is because of the it being "animated" or if you're starting to see the film at a deeper level where you surprise yourself. ;o
@RainFTWs answer above is not really sufficient. Of course 3D can portray feelings - have you not been moved by any Pixar movies? Of course, my answer will be brief too. But in hand-drawn, each detail (cell) that needs to move or be moved is treated with the same importance. An animator (human being, not comp) is treating the movement and fluidity of those cells. Moving your wrist, hand and tool (pen/pencil) is more natural then clicking away. That takes a secondary translation of ideas.
@hanluy1215, i presume the actual answer might have something to do with it being too perfect. its the same with musicians; some people refuse to use new gear, because if they would, they'd lose the little faults, slips and mishaps that makes analog (the older) gear sound like it does. digital gear would replicate the original sound just fine, but it would loose those little faults in the process thus making the new sound way too clinical (as in, too perfect). am i making any sense?
You dont see anything like this anymore in the animation biz. That's why i will be sad when Miyazaki dies :(.
