  • Great list: all of these themes are great and the games themselves were solid but overlooked.

Though I wonder how obscure Paladin’s Quest really was? It was released by Enix in 1993 along side E.VO, The 7th Saga and ActRaiser2, none of which were stellar and had a few write ups in Nintendo Power.

I believe 1993 is when Square put out Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, so perhaps that’s why it wasn’t as popular.

Funny: remember when Square put out a few awesome titles per year?

  • Thanks for these great tunes =D

  • I always thought the battle theme and Boss them from Arcana (SNES) was really cool, and it's obscure, so I think it fits your criteria.

  • @catboydale

    dude

    arcana's boss theme was /awesome/

glad to see someone else who played it! :D

  • @catboydale Agreed! Arcana was easily a lesser known title but had some of the best music of any SNES RPG. All five stages (especially Castle Bintel) had great themes.

  • If you ever make another of these, you should include some of the boss themes from Brandish. Obscure RPG, great music... it totally fits the criteria! That game needs more love... and an English release of the PSP remake.

  • @skyrunner14 Well, maybe I will do another one sometime. :3 I'm happy that this video is finally getting some attention...my vids don't tend to get many views. I'll check out Brandish soon.

  • cw theme did my fucking head in.

  • @QwoPhasaArius It's pretty awesome, ain't it? :3 I'd dig hearing somebody remix that battle tune.

  • @charemthecharmeleon No, no, I meant it annoyed the hell out of me! I know you cant expect too much from the nes and all, but 20 minutes in that repetition was killing me. I had it muted from there on out.

  • @QwoPhasaArius XD Oh, I see. Well, battle themes do get annoying after a while if you simply hear them too often. Considering that game's random encounter rate, I don't completely blame you.

  • Say Charem have you played the sequel to Paladin's Quest yet?

  • this list just goes to show that musical skills dont lie in what hard/software you use but in your heart, pure feeling!

  • @Alcatarion Well, software CAN make a difference...but if you put your heart into something, it's bound to turn out better. :3

  • I have beaten Chaos World countless times, and I still play it!. It has one of the best soundtracks I've heard even if it didn't use sound chip expansion xD

  • @hijoelagranputa Oh yeah? I guess it didn't, did it? =P

  • @charemthecharmeleon

    Nope, I've confirmed it.

    BTW, great vid dude =D

  • Thank you for the music!

    And very nice intro!

  • Kickin' tunes! I was never really into the really big and popular rpgs. My fave rpg series of all time is the Dragon Quest series. I've been playing them ever since i got the first two on GB vanilla.

Hey, did you know that the Final Fantasy series was inspired by the Dragon Quest series? True story.

  • @ZenoKage originally called dragon warrior but yes

  • @lockhart1433 To be honest, I always mix up the two names.

  • Nice job on the intro. It certainly seems to fit ya. ^.=.^

As far as the games go, I've actually always wanted to play Cyber Knight 2; then again, I'm a sucker for sci-fi RPGs, especially turn-based tactical ones.

I've actually never played Tales of Phantasia... though it did remind me that I need to finish ToD2 someday...

  • @EruditeDragon Google "cyber knight II translation" and click the first link for the best patch available. ;3

  • wow some epic retro music there! i didnt ever heard of half of them! and they sound awesome! gotta love on chip music!

  • @gsfox9 ^..^ Glad you enjoy dude!

  • Chaos World sounds catchy and Princess Maker 2 sounds like a really good 80s anime.

Paladin's Quest I also had the fortune of playing then. Didn't beat it, but it's music was amazing. The soundtrack is hard to find nowadays. It does come with great artwork too. Cyber Knight looks like an early version of End of Eternity to me.

As for Phantasia, I don't think anyone is a stranger to the first Tales game.

  • @Flegan777 What's unusual about ToP is the version I'm playing; this PSX version, never released outside of Japan, is rather obscure.

  • Ah yes, the infamous first remake put on the PS1 which added Suzu as a playable character and gave Chester actual tech moves. I heard ROMs of it are findable. I'm playing the Full Voice version on PSP, since I'm fairly fluent in Japanese :)

  • @Flegan777 Ah, nice! I'm...well, not fluent at all. xD Nor do I have money to actually have things like a PSP.

  • @charemthecharmeleon It's so nice listening to skits and scenes fully voiced :)

  • Hah, awesome showcase man! Actually I´ve been making a series of underrated videogame music that´s either obscure or just plain not famous enough, and this showcase helps me a lil more with finding more entries for my Underrated Video Game Music series

Also sweet, Paladin´s Quest! The final boss theme was a UVGM choice of mine a while back.

  • @FinalGamerJames Sweet, I'm glad to help then! =3

I've not heard Paladin's Quest's final boss theme actually. Never really got that far in the game...

Oh yeah, another game with kick-arse music is Sol Feace on the Sega-CD; it's a shooter, so it was the wrong genre for this video but...yeah. :P

  • Are you planning to do anymore of these obscure game music showcases? I seriously love the idea :3

  • @FinalGamerJames Probably...well, probably not. These require a lot more effort than my normal videos. ^^; Maybe something in the distant future.

Actually, my next project is even bigger than this one. Tons bigger. I'm doing a Top Ten list involving movies, and I'm taking note of the Nostalgia Critic's style of Top Ten lists also. I'm not ripping off; in other words, I'm gonna do a lot of research and, for the first time ever, appear on camera in-person to provide commentary and humor. :P

  • @charemthecharmeleon Well, if you're going to take notes on style, NC's a good person to start with; although, I never knew you were a fan.

In any event, I'm looking forward to your next project. It's good to see you branch out, and it'll be interesting to see you in person.

  • @EruditeDragon Oh, I'm a big fan of NC. =3 He's quite talented.

  • Those are some nice songs. Oh, and how dare you find RPGs I haven't played! I pride myself on playing as many RPGs as I can get my hands on. Although I believe I have played Paladin's Quest and Tales of Phantasia but not the other three.

Also, I have to say that intro was pretty good. I want an intro for my vids only I have no idea what to make for it.

  • @HyperSonicX2 I found most of these games thanks to the patching expertise of Aeon Genesis; look him up. He does some great translations, and focuses on RPGs...he has a lot of projects under his belt, so check him out!

Thx! =3 I put the intro together out of a bunch of still pictures, which I then animated in gimp. The Charmeleon in it was not made by me, but a friend who made the animation for me to use as an avatar on another site. Everything else beyond that is my own creation. :3
