wow, what a fat tub of shit this guy ended up becoming. he was always a joke and was never taken seriously by any fans. he is best remembered for getting being a pussy.
I'll never forget the Superstars show when Andre turned on Hogan. If that wasn't enough, the Hart Foundation beat the British Bulldogs for the tag titles...and Outback Jack finally made his debut lol Unreal.
He says Hogan, Andre started about Survivor Series. There was no Survivor Series in 86, the first one was in November of 87 which was after Wrestlemania 3 and Hogan and Andre were on separate teams. Hes a year behind.
@Shadowhoggy Yeah I know, but Honky Tonk Man was saying the Wrestlemania 3 angle between Hogan and Andre started at Survivor Series, which is wrong, there was no Survivor Series before Wrestlemania 3, the first one was in November of 87 after Wrestlemania had already takin place.
@Shadowhoggy Possibly but that Royal Rumble wasn't a ppv. Talking about this reminds me of how big these events were back then because of the massive build up there wasn't a ppv ever month to water everything down.
@81pdmatt not only that my friend but we had to watch our superstars take on jobbers and only see them colide at ppvs.Sometimes it seems like it was better that way
@Shadowhoggy It was absolutely better that way, whenever the big events did happen it was something special. Think about it, why would anyone spend $50 on a ppv headlined by CM Punk and Alberto Del Rio when we have seem them wrestle on Raw 4 times. Unfortunately we can never go back to using jobbers because fans now are spoiled and wouldn't watch.
@81pdmatt unfortunately people are spoiled and wouldnt watch that. oh well, at least we can say we got hired jobbers like tyler reks, trent baretta, evan bourne...
@81pdmatt This is true, and it's my biggest problem with the attitude era although it really started in Mid South. If you give away great matches on tv, where is the incentive to purchase the ppv. But that is where the business is at right now, I would expect the company to really take a good look at ppv business. People just don't have the disposable income.
@Bravesrtops I would replace the pay-per-views, minus the big 4, with Saturday Night's Main Events. Recombine the Raw and Smackdown rosters, unify the the world titles, along with the IC and US titles and have 2 big matches a week for each show that are properly hyped. Just last Monday we had a champion vs champion match and a Wrestlemania main event rematch with no hype on free tv. Seriously how can you do that and expect people to spend $50 on a ppv.
If you want to compare NWA's in-ring product to the WWF, that would be a fair comparison to make but when it came to doing business and marketing and advertising, they weren't shit. It takes more than Ric Flair along with the Four Horseman and a strong in-ring product in order to be able to compete with Vince McMahon. A whole lot more. Those guys were doin' their thang, gettin' it poppin' when they worked out there, but that shit ain't wasn't enough to fuck with the WWF, & they knew it too. Bet
On top of not only having the marketing and the PR, they didn't have the announcers back then. The commentators working for the WWF back in the 80s were at that time the best in the biz. They had Monsoon, McMahon, Ventura, Heenan, Lord Alfred and Mean Gene Okerland all in the prime of their careers and on top of their game, putting the product over and building up Wrestlemania III. They had the TV personalities necessary to sell Wrestlemania III and market it effectively compared to the NWA.
I agree with Honky there. The NWA had Ric Flair and the AWA had Nick Bockwinkle, but from a television presentation they weren't as strong. They didn't have the PR, they didn't have the toys, the advertising, the marketing, most of those shows were taped in TBS studios or some dusty old arena. The WWF always taped Superstars of Wrestling and Wrestling Challenge in the big arena's across the country. IIGHT.
Andre was a pro. He wasn't going to noshow Wrestlemania III, but Andre being the man that he was back then could with fuck Hogan mentally and intimidate the shit out of him. LOL. The reason why Hogan was so nervous to wrestle Andre is because Andre was fuckin' with Hogan. LOL. Andre.......he was going to put Hogan over and pass the torch and do whats right for business, but Andre is a fucking giant. The stories you hear about Hogan being nervous, that's Andre just fuckin' with Hogan, having fun
I have a tremendous amount of respect for how the WWF built up Wrestlemania III on the house show circuit in the hotbed arena's. I have seen all the shows. The house shows that they were running leading up to Wrestlemania III just makes you proud to be a wrestling fan. They weren't bsing and going through the motions. They were into it, gettin' it popppin' and bringing that fiya, probably everybody knew how much money they were going to be makin' at WM III, but damn THEY WERE GETTIN' IT!
Yeah, by February you're definitely into it. The house shows that the WWF was running at the time in Madison Square Garden, the Boston Garden, Philly and Toronto were amazing, and probably the greatest house shows ever in the history of professional wrestling to be televised in their respective cities on their networks. What McMahon, Patterson, George Scott and Gorilla Monsoon were doing with the booking back then was amazing, and all the wrestlers were busting their asses working so hard.
@apolanco602 I met Honky over this past Labor Day weekend in Minnesota. I'm a referee for some indy leauges up here & Honky was booked on our show. I agree that he's a great guy. Alot of people don't like Honly because of his opinions, but I think he's a great guy with very brutally honest opinions. In short, don't ask for Honky Tonk Man's opinion on anything unless you are prepared to hear it.
Back then, WrestleMania didn't have the building and "lead up" that it now has today (no Royal Rumble or Monday Night Raw)...Check out the new DVD (The True Story of WrestleMania) and you'll see how late the Andre/Hogan match came together..they didn't even announce the Silverdome as the location until February (unlike today when it is announced a year in advance)...Bottom line: the planets all aligned themselves for this mega event (& thank God they did!)...
We didn't get PPV yet in my town, so I remember watching the news that night to see if Hogan beat Andre. I was 11, and didn't know why the biggest sports event wasnt covered by the sports anchor.
@Christian28Star As opposed to some of the other wrestlers that we've seen come and go? This man is closing in on 60 years old. There is an abnormal amount of wrestlers who didn't make it to 50. Or even 40 for that matter. I say the guy did alright.
I think its funny how the new school prick fans judge our era in wrestling, but it aint just them, its the old school fans who want to appear cool to the lil kiddies, so they bash the product they grew up with and cheered, piss on that,I would take the worse 80s show over todays TNA and WWE combined.a for Honky being horrible, listen folks I can count the number of great workers in history, probably on both hands, most are not technicians.they cant all Be Kurt angle,or Bret hart,oR BENOIT
@BorderCityBandit I agree for the most part. There were a lot of great personalities in the WWF back then. All of the wrestlers that were talked about were just these great stars. However I do think that the Attitude Era was just a little bit better. Then again maybe it was because the 80's was like a cartoon and the 90's was more like a comic book movie. Both are great but I like the comic book movie better.
I saw/heard one shoot with Honky Tonk Man, where he was saying that Bobby Heenan talked shit about people just like "The Brain" character did, so the character wasn't a stretch.
I KNOW! There was no suvivor series in 86. Unless it was not a ppv and andre and hogan were on the same team together. Pretty sure 87 was the first SS. I know it was the first WWF PPV.
Honky had about a one year great run in WWF b4 guys like Rude, Perfect , Earthquake and others surpassed him as heels. It was a great gimmick but he really was a lousy wrestler.
@QuentinDude I won't overrate HTM, but to say Rude, Perfect, and Earthquake blew him away with their heel runs is a little bit wishful thinking. I like all those guys but Rude didn't do shit in WWF other than a couple of feuds with UW (the world title feud which did not draw very well). Perfect was good but wasn't a big draw either. Earthquake was a great big man but it's debateable if he was a great draw, other than his SS match with Hogan.
@peterp21 I felt earthquakes biggest draws were when he was with typhoon as the natural disasters. I couldn't stand to see earthquake in a singles match. Natural Disasters vs. Legion Of Doom were always great tag team matches.
@cashcrazywhiteboy You're probably right about Earthquake as a draw. But, within the context of WWF 1990 booking, Warrior as new champ would have benefitted more from having Earthquake as his big first feud rather than Rick Rude. Earthquake may have been the "Monster of the Month" during that time, but feeding him to Hogan instead of UW was a bad idea.
Two reasons why Honky(Wayne Ferris) won the I-C title from Ricky Steamboat were because Vince McMahon wouldn't grant him the time off when him & his wife had their then baby boy and secondly,Steamboat never wanted a long,drawn-out feud with him to begin with.
Honky is telling the truth, but I think the NWA product was much better at this time. Now, Wrestlemania III was a GREAT show! However, most of the NWA supershows were just AWESOME!!!
Honkey was a great Intercontinental Champ, but he felt "robbed" by Warrior. I guess he felt much better after smashing his guitar on his successor's back.
I'm not saying it isn't true, I'm saying that no one should take Ric Flair at his word. He just happened to be honest this time. That's doesn't suddenly make him an honest guy.
this proves my point how these guys dont know shit about wrestling, honky is talking about guys from the old NWA / Crockett area and this jackass is talking about Curt Hennig, dude Hennig was in the AWA at this time before coming to WWF, i know your young but atleast read about these people first
@recklessyouth84 Yeah. You'd think he would remember the 1st SS. His team took the worst beating of all time. Then he came out and challenged hogan to title vs title match to save face.
did you see the pipers pit? first hogan got a trophy that was huge and hogan gave a promo, later andre got 1 that was smaller and hogan came out and did another promo to the fans telling how the giant is so good the usual jazz and the giant left as he " didnt like hogan taking his moment and felt he should of got a better trophy "
they used to have the same thing happen in dif parts of the country, they would run the same scripts in dif towns. for the fued they showed on tv. hogan got a trophy first, then andre got 1 which was smaller.
The main feud stemmed from André the Giant's kayfabe turn and betrayal of his ally, the WWF Champion Hulk Hogan, which began when Hogan was presented a trophy for being the WWF Champion for three years, and André, his good friend, came out to congratulate him. Shortly afterwards, André was presented a slightly smaller trophy for being "undefeated in the WWF for 15 years" and Hogan came out to congratulate André, but ended up being the focal point of the interview.
Honky said the incident with Dynamite slapping him never happend but the truth came out and we all now Honky started crying like a baby lol. Jacques Rougeau confirmed this so did Dynamite in his book and Bret Hart also confirmed this in his book. Honky stop bullshitting us, we know the truth, Dynamite made you cry like a baby
honeky is legit, tough as hell. i think he slapped dynamite and made dynamite shat himself, read that in brets book. when honk came into the dresssing room everyone trembled at his greatness. I also heard Honkey beat rickey steamboats lazy ass all over the ring.
Also, according to Bret Hart, Honky did cry and beg when Dynamite Kid slapped him. Bret said in his book that for someone who was weak to disrespect a legit tough guy like Harley Race was very disrespectful, and that's why Dynamite Kid slapped him. I think HTM is full of crap. He admits that for the most part, all that trash he walked on the web was him just doing his gimmick. I'm sure some of what he said, he believed, but I think Honky was just another "online tough guy".
No disrespect towards Honky, but Flair would tear him a new one if HTM tried anything with him. Flair is a legit tough guy with a temper who has gotten into plenty of shoot fights whereas Honky only had one where he was bitch slapped by Dyamonite Kid, and Honky responded by crying and begging for mercy.
Dynamite Kid says that in his book. Honky and Jimmy Hart say otherwise. No disrespect towards Dynamite Kid but even Diana Hart said that he was the biggest asshole she ever met.
dud flair is not a legit tough guy where did you get that from. he just got his ass handed to him by his daughters wimpy drunk boyfriend. and he didn't get into fist fights like the real guys (dick murdoch, orndorff, oh and wayne ferris)
Well, Flair handled his own well against Vader who is a legit tough guy. Know that story?
And I can't help but LOLl at your comment about Wayne Ferris being a real tough guy. I found him entertaining, but I've never heard or read about him ever getting into any shoot fights. He claims he once got into a fight with Mike Shaw, but then they quickly patched things up. I asked him about it on his site, but his webmaster removed it.
Well, I read the fight he had with the Nasty Boys, and with Vader several years before I even read Flair's book. I just remembered his fight with Bischoff as well. That was all over the web.
The Vader/Flair fight was them in a match. Vader was working stiff, & warned that if Flair didn't fight back, he'd beat the fuck out of him, so Flair returned his stiff shots. That's from various sources. I also read Flair's book for the first time last April, & I promise you, he does mention his fight with the Nasty Boys. I've also read about that for some sites as well, & Flair goes into detail about the Bischoff fight, but I guess it wasn't much of a fight, since Bischoff wouldn't fight back.
SO the Vader one wasn't a fight, it was just a stiff match.
Can you give me the page number, or a rough estimate, so I can find it in the book?
Just remember though, that a lot of people in wrestling tell there one perspective on certain stories which, makes them look much better. It is rare wrestlers tell the whole truth.
I checked the book out at a local library, so I can't do that I'm afraid. In regards of Vader, he's a tough man, so I think anyone who can survive a shoot match with him deserves some respect. Harely Race was working Vader's corner too, and confirmed that Vader was working very stiff.
As I posted, I read about that years beforehand on various sites, & if you do the research, you may come across a page or two that has that story, as well as the other Flair stories.
You're clearly a Honky Tonk Man fan, & that's cool, I am too, but with all due respect, it looks to me like you're being a bit bias. I mean, if I was on here posting stories about Honky getting into legit fights, would you be on here, disputing it, or would you be loling, & marking out for HTM? Please answer me honestly if you don't mind please.
I have not said anything about HTM being a bad ass. The only story I heard about Honky being in a fight was when Dynamite slapped him.
Are you claiming I'm a honky mark because I'm disputing Flair tells the truth? Or are you trying to make it look like I'm a HTM mark because I made an accurate statement about wrestlers distorting the truth?
Contrary to your opinion, you know as much as I do about the details. Last tie I read, it was basically Ric yelling at Eric. There was no physical altercation between the two. Just a volatile argument.
Unlike you, I don't put all my faith into a WWE produced book and Internet websites.
Well that makes you a fool for posting an opinion based on one source. Oh a slap is not a fight by the way. It is an attack, just like when Rick got attacked by his future Son in law.
you know, in my humble opinion....honky tonk man was the greatest intercontinental champion of all time. nobody else has ever said that, until me. if you hear someone else say honky tonk man was the greatest intercontinrental champion of all time...they're just repeating what i allready said
it's true he couldn't wrestle worth a shit in the ring and i think more ppl than not have referred to the dynamite kid incident as fact; his memory like many others is jacked as there was no survivor series in 1986.... however, he did hold the IC Title longer than anybody else because ppl despised his character and wanted anyone to beat him and he worked main events at the house shows...you can't take that away from him
really? Honky couldn't work... Maybe he can't work the indie crazy fast style but he could work his Memphis style like a mother fucker.... they give you a title for short term as a push but if they give it to you for over a year, that means you're a great heat seeker and fans pay to see you lose and boo you... people who can't work would be Lashley or Cena or somebody like that but not the greatest Intercontinental Champion of ALL TIME, The Honky Tonk Man.
i just said he couldn't wrestle... doesn't mean he can't work because over the years i'm learning to distinguish between the two....i used to get caught up in the internet term of "work rate" and have gotten away from buying people's set in stone philosophies and trying to figure it out from all sides.... HTM got consistent heat with his gimmick and drew money with it.... i only said he couldn't wrestle (hold for hold that kinda bullshit) he could work (draw money work not excessive "highspots")
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
HTM is a noob who couldn't wrestle to save his life. He lived off Hogan's coattails. Without Hogan, he was the shits. This is the same guy who has talked trash about Steamboat, one guy who is universally respected. Hell, I don't like Dynamite Kid, but he even denies the Dynamite Kid story while the rest of the boys backstage have even confirmed the whole story.
He's a habitual liar who thinks he's a real tough guy
wow, what a fat tub of shit this guy ended up becoming. he was always a joke and was never taken seriously by any fans. he is best remembered for getting being a pussy.

Two reasons why Honky(Wayne Ferris) won the I-C title from Ricky Steamboat were because Vince McMahon wouldn't grant him the time off when him & his wife had their then baby boy and secondly,Steamboat never wanted a long,drawn-out feud with him to begin with.

Honkey was a great Intercontinental Champ, but he felt "robbed" by Warrior. I guess he felt much better after smashing his guitar on his successor's back.

That fact about Hogan Andre is not true.
Andre received a trophy and Hogan came out to steal the spotlight Andre said
OldDX4Ever 2 years ago
did you see the pipers pit? first hogan got a trophy that was huge and hogan gave a promo, later andre got 1 that was smaller and hogan came out and did another promo to the fans telling how the giant is so good the usual jazz and the giant left as he " didnt like hogan taking his moment and felt he should of got a better trophy "
nexivdr 2 years ago
Should have.
FCT5809 2 years ago
Yeah I saw it live actually in Poughkeepsie NY.
Hogan never recieved a trophy...he stole Andre's moment was the basis for the fued
OldDX4Ever 2 years ago
they used to have the same thing happen in dif parts of the country, they would run the same scripts in dif towns. for the fued they showed on tv. hogan got a trophy first, then andre got 1 which was smaller.
nexivdr 2 years ago
The main feud stemmed from André the Giant's kayfabe turn and betrayal of his ally, the WWF Champion Hulk Hogan, which began when Hogan was presented a trophy for being the WWF Champion for three years, and André, his good friend, came out to congratulate him. Shortly afterwards, André was presented a slightly smaller trophy for being "undefeated in the WWF for 15 years" and Hogan came out to congratulate André, but ended up being the focal point of the interview.
nexivdr 2 years ago
Annoyed by this, André walked out during Hogan's congratulation speech and not long after that, on an edition of the interview segment Piper's Pit.

Zeeboe 2 years ago
HTM was tremendous on the mic, but Savage is best IC of alltime.
ufdb 2 years ago
He threatened to kick Ric's ass at the Hall of Fame. Something tells me Vince cooled him out or said something to him (Honky)
sserpent21 2 years ago
No disrespect towards Honky, but Flair would tear him a new one if HTM tried anything with him. Flair is a legit tough guy with a temper who has gotten into plenty of shoot fights whereas Honky only had one where he was bitch slapped by Dyamonite Kid, and Honky responded by crying and begging for mercy.
Zeeboe 2 years ago
Dynamite Kid says that in his book. Honky and Jimmy Hart say otherwise. No disrespect towards Dynamite Kid but even Diana Hart said that he was the biggest asshole she ever met.
sserpent21 2 years ago
Bret Hart has also said he was there, and that Dynamite Kid did slap him and make him cry. I guess we'll never know for sure.
Zeeboe 2 years ago
dud flair is not a legit tough guy where did you get that from. he just got his ass handed to him by his daughters wimpy drunk boyfriend. and he didn't get into fist fights like the real guys (dick murdoch, orndorff, oh and wayne ferris)
bigtrex76 2 years ago 3
Well, Flair handled his own well against Vader who is a legit tough guy. Know that story?
And I can't help but LOLl at your comment about Wayne Ferris being a real tough guy. I found him entertaining, but I've never heard or read about him ever getting into any shoot fights. He claims he once got into a fight with Mike Shaw, but then they quickly patched things up. I asked him about it on his site, but his webmaster removed it.
Zeeboe 2 years ago
Who did Flair fight?
Hulkamania4eva 2 years ago
Various people according to his book, two of them being the Nasty Boys. He and Vader also had a somewhat of a shoot fight as well.
Zeeboe 2 years ago
Ric Flair told a story in his book so it must be true right? This is the wrestling business remember.
Hulkamania4eva 2 years ago
Well, I read the fight he had with the Nasty Boys, and with Vader several years before I even read Flair's book. I just remembered his fight with Bischoff as well. That was all over the web.
Zeeboe 2 years ago
Did the Vader thing happen in a match? It could have just been the guy working stiff with each other.
I've read Flair's book as well but have never heard about a fight with the Nasty Boys.
The Bischoff thing was an argument I think, not a fight.
Hulkamania4eva 2 years ago
The Vader/Flair fight was them in a match. Vader was working stiff, & warned that if Flair didn't fight back, he'd beat the fuck out of him, so Flair returned his stiff shots. That's from various sources. I also read Flair's book for the first time last April, & I promise you, he does mention his fight with the Nasty Boys. I've also read about that for some sites as well, & Flair goes into detail about the Bischoff fight, but I guess it wasn't much of a fight, since Bischoff wouldn't fight back.
Zeeboe 2 years ago
SO the Vader one wasn't a fight, it was just a stiff match.
Can you give me the page number, or a rough estimate, so I can find it in the book?
Just remember though, that a lot of people in wrestling tell there one perspective on certain stories which, makes them look much better. It is rare wrestlers tell the whole truth.
Hulkamania4eva 2 years ago 2
I checked the book out at a local library, so I can't do that I'm afraid. In regards of Vader, he's a tough man, so I think anyone who can survive a shoot match with him deserves some respect. Harely Race was working Vader's corner too, and confirmed that Vader was working very stiff.
As I posted, I read about that years beforehand on various sites, & if you do the research, you may come across a page or two that has that story, as well as the other Flair stories.
Zeeboe 2 years ago
You're clearly a Honky Tonk Man fan, & that's cool, I am too, but with all due respect, it looks to me like you're being a bit bias. I mean, if I was on here posting stories about Honky getting into legit fights, would you be on here, disputing it, or would you be loling, & marking out for HTM? Please answer me honestly if you don't mind please.
Zeeboe 2 years ago
I have not said anything about HTM being a bad ass. The only story I heard about Honky being in a fight was when Dynamite slapped him.
Are you claiming I'm a honky mark because I'm disputing Flair tells the truth? Or are you trying to make it look like I'm a HTM mark because I made an accurate statement about wrestlers distorting the truth?
Hulkamania4eva 2 years ago
So you're not an HTM fan?

contrary to your opinion the fight between ric and bischoff was real! you're wrong!
oldschool6804 2 years ago
Contrary to your opinion, you know as much as I do about the details. Last tie I read, it was basically Ric yelling at Eric. There was no physical altercation between the two. Just a volatile argument.
Unlike you, I don't put all my faith into a WWE produced book and Internet websites.
Hulkamania4eva 2 years ago
read rics book he slapped him and tried to gouge his eye out and yes i do take rics word.
oldschool6804 2 years ago
Well that makes you a fool for posting an opinion based on one source. Oh a slap is not a fight by the way. It is an attack, just like when Rick got attacked by his future Son in law.

it's true he couldn't wrestle worth a shit in the ring and i think more ppl than not have referred to the dynamite kid incident as fact; his memory like many others is jacked as there was no survivor series in 1986.... however, he did hold the IC Title longer than anybody else because ppl despised his character and wanted anyone to beat him and he worked main events at the house shows...you can't take that away from him
bigvern624 2 years ago
TheTrueFranchise 2 years ago 2
i just said he couldn't wrestle... doesn't mean he can't work because over the years i'm learning to distinguish between the two....i used to get caught up in the internet term of "work rate" and have gotten away from buying people's set in stone philosophies and trying to figure it out from all sides.... HTM got consistent heat with his gimmick and drew money with it.... i only said he couldn't wrestle (hold for hold that kinda bullshit) he could work (draw money work not excessive "highspots")
bigvern624 2 years ago
excellent point. yeah you would never see a classic match between HTM and say.... Mike Quackenbush or Claudio or anyone like that.
