I agree with the information on this video i dont think most people relize the effects of tv and how far we have come in this day and age. I have noticed the differance of the characters on Disney and even television and the movies. I belive the images we see also effect the way we tend to present ourselves
I think that yes, people are often influenced by media nowadays although it can't be held completely responsible for how a person turns out or acts. That's just removing responsibilty from a person completely.
Oddly enough I've never been a big fan of Disney's princesses; I was always more into video games such as Super Mario, Sonic, etc. But when I did watch Disney films I generally liked characters such as the Beast and Mushu as odd as that sounds.
The Beast and Mushu are awesome characters... they are complicated and have layers to them. Layers and conflict make them interesting. Characters who lack internal conflict are much less appealing I think.
I am a child of the 90's, and I remember all of the Disney movies... When I was a kid I liked those movies... not too much but they were okay. I wasn't ever influenced by the princess' though. I had only brothers, lol so if I was into them, I would have been made fun of. So I was more into Super Mario and stuff. And my influence was my mom more than anything. I don't really think girls are influenced by Disney movies. I'm sure, 7/10 times I'd say they do grow out of it.... But thats my opinion.
I just worry that they teach women to dream of only love and not of their own goals beyond a man. The first Mulan breaks the mold but the second tries to undo the progress.
I feel that the image of the princess is a reflection of what society has been engrained with: That a lady seek a man and man seek for a lady. They do show that a lady should be the nurturer of the family and the man take on the provider role. I like that theme, but let us get real, not everyone has a prefect family, and these more modern films help the young women to build more backbone and independence from male rule. If you want to cross dress to save the lives of thousands its ok.
Here's another way to look at it... Disney creates too much pressure on guys to create the perfect romance for women. How can we live up to Prince Charming or any of those other guys? Shrek is a great twist on this though. He only wants to loved for who he is.
As far as the discussion on Disney Princesses...I used to be a huge fan of cinderella as a child mainly because of the fairy tale & Prince charming part of the story. Now I still am a fan because of the moral of the story, she works her tail off for three people that have no such respect for her and in the process she still maintains her spirit and is still courteous and respectful to them. That shows a lot of class. The other Princesses in my opinion had it a little easier.
I do feel like it is very important to teach media studies to children in school. Kids need to learn (even at young ages) about what to expect from the media, movies, documentaries and the local news. I agree with Kataluna3 about media studies being just as important for parents and teachers so that they are educated on the kinds of things that are available out their for their kids to see.
i think life does imitate art and art imitates life... "its a circle its a hoop that never ends"- my sweetheart pocahontas... just playing. anybody see the princesses on shrek the third? that was hilarious, they kicked butt, so maybe the circle is coming back around to strong women again,
I think that we do need media education in the schools, not only for children but for parents and teachers. As a kindergarten teacher, I was amazed at what my young students were watching, with permission from their parents. I also think the media itself should take a look at itself, and its influence on people.
Yes, kids are influenced by what they watch more than what they read but schools only teach reading skills when media literacy is quite important. How many kids really think about what they are watching? How about parents?
I agree with you, the way women and young girls are being portrayed lately is bothering me as well. Is it contributing to the teen pregnancy issue? What happens to girls who can't live up to the princess image, what happens to the world when it is full of air-headed dependent women?
It's a big worry, but my wife and I try hard to talk with her about it. She's a tom boy and always has been, but sometimes she does ask if girls can certain things after seeing certain movies (like those *@$% Barbie movies) and we say yes... girls can do anything they want. My new baby daughter seems much more interested in pretty things so I may have to watch her a little closer with what she sees.
This is a great topic; I have actually spent time debating this with my co-workers. I know I'm lame! Ha-ha I am against the princess image and what it stands for.
It's not lame. I think it is really an important issue. Our children are vulnerable to these images. I think Disney is such a big influence on kids so they have an obligation to think through what values they teach.

We really are influenced and it might help us if we were more aware of it.

I love the princesses in Shrek the 3rd. Snow White rocks. One of my favorite scenes is where she calls the animals to get the tree monsters.

I think it is an impossible thing to live up to. Who really grows up to be a princess? Who gets to become one in the real world?
