Thank you for the lesson. I'm sorry a bunch of people put you down for just trying to help people who want to learn (especially those like me ho can't afford personal lessons and aren't talented enough to do it alone lol) but if it's any consolation, I'm a beginner and even this simple lesson is going to help me a lot with playing what I feel. Thanks again.
if you wanna get technically, all music theory does not all come from the major scale. there are many indian "ragas" that really have little rules that are related to any form for standard major.
dude can you please kinda do the same vid or somthing cause i dnt know the names of notes just the fet numbers lol im learning by myself ... nd can you send me the excersize for the sweeping =D ROCK ON DUDE
I'll give him credit trying to teach others, it's cool he put these put and the effort he stuck into it, but he needs to put some more effort into mastering these licks himself or people are going to think that it's supposed to sound like that. Bad teachings cost a LOT more time to unlearn and i don't want people to have to go through all that trouble ;]
One more thing unless you use tone controls that are on your guitar get rid of em this is easy just cut the resistors That are soldred on the tone pots this will instantly wake your guitar up. passive tone controls can only cut tone even when turned all the way to the treble side. The best tone control is an ACTIVE wah pedal
A lot of metal players used the "scooped mid" setting. Turn the mid all the way down and dial in from there. If your drummer and bass player play loud turn the mid up not the volume. Distortion pedals are crazy inconsistent even the exact same models sound different from one another. Try lots of em with YOUR AMP.
Pickups probably won't help your tone that much. They'll help with output and sustain. I personally dont like to use batteries more than I have to. I don't even know if EMG has passive pickups. The midrange on your amp is the most important tone shaping tool you have.
Hey i didnt know if anybody could help me. I play a lot of metal and hard rock but im not acheiving the tone im looking for. I want my tone smooth and warm but with a lot of distortion. All my ibanez and gibson guitars have stock p/u and i was thinking about switching to emgs. Or my other option is buying a new amp. Please HELP!
Agreed. It's his hammer-on/pull-offs compared with the picking. For it to sound right, every note has to have same duration. Learn to control your hammer-ons/pull-offs, so that you can play them at ANY speed fluidly.
thanks for explanation...is there anyway you can make a video so i know how to do it? im a visual learner and im trying to learn how to do it so i can bust that shit out at my local bar
practice playing on clean or no amp, cause alot of people play on distortion and hide all the notes in beetween. and start very slow. make sure you hit all the notes!!!
I'm doing ok right now on sweeping but my problem is not being able to speed up. Seriously i'v practiced hours sweeping and i have not got any better anybody got any suggestions?
having learned to do it myself, i'd say that the main problem with sweeping is not actually learning to do it.
thats all just practice time with a metronome.
its once you've learned it, trying to do something original with it, becuase sweeping got old in the 80's. its hard to play it now without sounding generic.
that is to say, its not learning to sweep, its learning -when- to sweep.
Not at all.Sweeping is a tought technique to master but if you start with 2 and 3 string arpeggios with a (metronome) its never to early to start getting the feel of this technique but the metronome is key in learning these techniques. You will learn them twice as fast with one and my advice is to not even try without one.But never give up and make them a part of your everyday workout and you will see you will get it down. Its all about what you put into it.Good luck.
in my personal case.. when I was starting to sweep I found 2 and 3 strings arpeggios very hard... so then I learned to sweep with 5 string arpeggios.. now I do some 3 string sweeps too... but I still find 5 easier...
Hmm,Interesting and you are not the only one that has said that. When I started sweeping I started with 5 and 6 and my teacher at that time 20 yes ago ha,ha,made me start on 2 and 3 string patterns because he said it was to easy to develope bad habbits running accross all 6,though now I dont agree with him.I think it should be an individual approach because what works for one may not work for another.Whatever keeps you playing is the most important thing I think.
because it helps do play at the right tempo... and also in the case of sweep picking you need to play all the notes at the same speed.. that's why a metronome helps... but I think it's more important to have proper technique first.. then comes the tempo
Down 5,hammeron the C that is your turn around and 5 up,then repeat. You can also pick the turn around but most guys just hammeron when sweeping the major pattern.
at least the guy takes time out of his life to teach the rest of us how to do things even if he isnt good at least hes trying, why dont oyu post a vid so we can see your AMAZING guitar skills
He's teaching fundamentals, not doing a gig. There's no sense in listening to it very long as the arpeggio motion is universal; hear it, practice it. If you're in it for that, it's the visuals you need be concerned with, not an unconvincing agenda based on putting this guy down.
when i was learing to sweep that hardest i found was to get it clean 1. have a constant motion on the right hand and 2. to plam open strings as soon as you play the next string. hope that helps. I have a video on my channel of me sweeping and stuff so check it out if you get a chance:D
Funny that you'd say that, I actually modified my original analogy to say Orlando Bloom rather than Graham Norton. I realized nobody has that many guitars.
i know but i think sweep picking is not used in blues...its very metal rock sound...and fast...but blues can be fast sometimes so....just pick the strings and play..haha
Alternat picking is just alternating your pick in an up and down motion instead of always down. Sweep picking has nothing to do with Blues guitar. lol
Learn everything. Don't let stereotypes stop you. SRV shreds the blues...maybe using sweeps for blues would be interesting...new flavor. Don't follow tradition, or else new ideas won't be created.
dude i cant tell u how helpful this was. iv been wanting to play sweep picking ever since i started which was a year ago completely self taught so the theory helped alot to. im gonna subscribe to ur main site.
hey, man. :) good lesson. nicely done. i'm a guitar teacher for years now and i'm curious why you teach with distortion on. do you encourage practice with it on? i'm not nit picking here; quite the contrary. i'm just picking another good guitar teacher's brain. :) peace, man.....sure would love jamming with you.
some times its cool to practice with distortion because the things you are practicing are being practiced to be played with dist. And dist causes noise which you HAVE to learn how to mute. When playing clean, even if an open string gets away you wont hear it and will think huray i did it! when you play with dist on it wont be as clean because you didnt learn to mute... this is advanced stuff i know but very important! isns it so mr DT?
:) right on, man. i get a lot of my kids into practicing on the bridge pickup with the tone all the way up and at a pretty good volume - CLEAN. same principle you're saying, but...i always hear distortion MASKING flubs and bad notes. most pros i know practice clean for that very reason: everything comes out much clearer; mistakes and all. there IS a very good argument for practicing stage volume distortion, too. you DO have to know how to control it and where the 'good tone' is hiding.:)
hehehe. no. :) i take blues gigs a lot, but i'm a straight-ahead jazz player at heart. i DO play rock in the studio very often, since that's what most people are paying for, but i'm a jazzer. :)
Keep your site going mate, I purchased a cheap DVD the other day. I am hopeing to sign up in 6 months when I get more spare time. keep up the good wk.
Yeah, I wish he would make reviews on budget guitars in general. I can't really affod all of these gibsons and stuff. LOL. But I do love this guys reviews, I think he has the best ones on youtube. Or the best that I have seen atleast.
He has a couple budget guitar reviews.. but the thing with budget guitars is they will hold you back in many cases. Saving up for a good used guitar in the $300-500 range is a very good idea.
i always liked the way he taught. like you said it was easy to understand. i don't know how i found out about rockongoodpeople but i was glad i did. he's helped my playing alot.
dude this is a great lesson man .. i got one question though, i have a lot of feedback and i want to know how to get rid of it .. wat do you think i should do?
Awesome lesson, i'm already itch'n to try it out, and wondering if i can just drop the 3rd to a flat3 (1 fret back) and cop out a minor arpeggio, without having to learn a whole new fingering. -- About the feedback Amphibianman94 -- have you tried just getting the guitar out of the "line of fire" from your amp? Maybe just aiming that speaker in a different direction, or move where you sit/stand in relation to it?? Hope it helps

i wish he makes a review of a squier strat comparing it to a fender like he did with the gibson and epiphone!
PieroMM 3 years ago 4
Yeah, I wish he would make reviews on budget guitars in general. I can't really affod all of these gibsons and stuff. LOL. But I do love this guys reviews, I think he has the best ones on youtube. Or the best that I have seen atleast.

He has a couple budget guitar reviews.. but the thing with budget guitars is they will hold you back in many cases. Saving up for a good used guitar in the $300-500 range is a very good idea.

dude this is a great lesson man .. i got one question though, i have a lot of feedback and i want to know how to get rid of it .. wat do you think i should do?
Amphibianman94 3 years ago
i get the same problem when i have my humbuckers plugged in. what i did was lower the reverb on what ever pedals you have and amp and i was set.

DEFkon001 3 years ago
Yes. That is how you make a minor arpeggio.
