WWI had more bushmen/farmers tha WWII and most were mounted infantry (Light Horse). During WWII the population was around 7 million and most lived in the cities and communities on the coastline, in fact i read somewhere it was anywhere between 70-80% of the population lived in the cities.

The infantry have always been the spear head of our military, why the change? I respect the SAS but they weren't in the trenches whilst the Germans charged their lines or gunned down by German machine guns , they didn't fight a visous enemy in conditions of kokoda or the front in NA, then korea and so on... yes the SAS had been around since WWII but the infantry has ALWAYS been our spear head... At Bornhöft in 1813, during the war of the 6th Coalition, this caused a 400 strong Swedish cavalry unit monitoring the retreat of the Danish army to directly disobey its orders of reconnaisance and instead attack and defeat the Danish force, 2500 strong. If I remember correctly they got a very stern talking-to for this.

@MrMapex2010 One of the greatest fallacy's about WWII for Australia was that there were more farmers/bushmen than city boys, this is simply wrong most were city/suburb boys and men. WWI had more bushmen/farmers tha WWII and most were mounted infantry (Light Horse). During WWII the population was around 7 million and most lived in the cities and communities on the coastline, in fact i read somewhere it was anywhere between 70-80% of the population lived in the cities.

My grandfather was called all the names under the sun when he said that he was burying hundreds of bodies during WW2 when he was in the RAAF. @MrMapex2010 i expected as much (generalising), the military records i have viewed have been very helpful for me tracing my family members that have served and their units/dates/battles etc. i have even traced my great-great-great grandfather back to the Welch Fusiliers from Britain. sometimes u got to spend money to find the right information tho. Also there was an investigation into the Darwin Bombing, many servicemen simply fled as they thought they were bout to be taken by Japs

The infantry have always been the spear head of our military, why the change? I respect the SAS but they weren't in the trenches whilst the Germans charged their lines or gunned down by German machine guns , they didn't fight a visous enemy in conditions of kokoda or the front in NA, then korea and so on... yes the SAS had been around since WWII but the infantry has ALWAYS been our spear head... But of course SAS has earned their spot since WW2 and has always been ready for anything. AUS <3

After every war new things are learnt, equipment is changed and tactics are changed or adopted. Our soldiers are highly experienced and our army has progressed in leaps and bounds in the last 100 years taking the most from every experience.

Back when this report was done, it was sort of true....the very highly trained 'Regular' soldiers didn't get their share of the action, but since 2009, the tables have turned and the majority of the action has been taken on by the 'Regulars'...Its almost 2012 and not a day passes where there isn't a significant contact by the RAR's. So confined to history he says? Not likely, since we have had far bigger contacts than Vietnam...and how many have we lost? Fuck all compared to most countries.

At Bornhöft in 1813, during the war of the 6th Coalition, this caused a 400 strong Swedish cavalry unit monitoring the retreat of the Danish army to directly disobey its orders of reconnaisance and instead attack and defeat the Danish force, 2500 strong. If I remember correctly they got a very stern talking-to for this.

These guys are silly. Many US and allied troops spend time checking one house after another in Iraq, interviewing locals, etc. It's probably just as boring. Maybe we should revive ANZUS and initiate a swap program. I don't think they'll find the work environment/conditions very different. I've seen some videos on youtube about soldiers on the front lines fighting boredom once in a while. One even has his wife send a potted plant every so often!

@Riyun72 the vietcong did NOT beat the US if you actually knew anything about the vietnam war you would know that while the main US and allied forces were actively engaging regular NVA troops the vietcong was only doing hit and run attacks until major assaults eg TET offensive. the vietcong had the support of villages because they threatened to kill them and they took their children so they would ill the family if the kids didnt fight and vis versa. you need to look at why the US and allied....

@hurro67 Incorrect mate, Aussie ADF expenditure is $27 billion USD in 2011, and the AUD is worth 1.06 US Dollars. China's expenditure is only 40 billion USD. You're about right with the UK though. China could not get it's troops to Australia, because it's navy (PLA-N) doesn't have enough of the right ships to transport troops long distances. And yes, the British Commonwealth is obliged to help Oz in war. In WW2 there were 1 million Aussie troops out of only 7 million population.
