Remember when I first saw this movie and this part I had to rewind it like 5 times to listen to it... A Great Scene... Also the ending has good poetry too.
"..and we are public enemy's number one. ONE ONE ONE ..... ONE ONE ONE !!!!!!!!!!!" exclaims the freestylest. "Forgot what the fuck i was think'n." says one of the listeners
I remember when I was in the 9th grade, my English teacher showed us this. After watching this part, the entire class was quiet for the rest of the day. It really does make you forget everything you were thinking about. And it's such a powerful scene that after all these years, I still think about it from time to time.
The truth will set you free! In thi...s powerful prose, Saul reveals THEIR true prison and the path to freedom! It is the mind that is held captive. Manipulative, false ideologies, history, casts, constrains and paralysis not only the mind but the self, the soul. This awareness is the first step in understanding one's relationship to the universe. The voice, the lens of art, can be a powerful and transformational force that changes lives...
Have you ever done either? Written and preformed a slam poem or freestyle rapped? I have... theres a feel to them that's different. A poem is a poem, that ancient poetic lyrical style runs deep in slam as in any other type of poetry. In rap is about the beat as much as the words. In Slam it's about making the words mean more, it's about adding infinite power to words that alone may not be that powerful.
@deryni21 but i would argue the difference is mainly in the form, or rather in the intention of the artist, but it doesn't mean that an artist cannot do one and the other, which is why people mistake them! on nas's album "hip hop is dead" the last song is accapella (or almost cause there is a voice in the back saying live hip hop live), I tend to consider that slam!
this scene actually makes the whole "pen mightier than the sword " idea believable .people embarrassed by their childishness and ignorance of what they know is true, Sual is the man
THIS IS CALLED SPOKEN WORD FUCKING POETRY. It came out of poetry slams... where this upbeat, intense type of poetry would commonly win, I've fucking had this conversation with Taylor Mali... TRUST ME, I'm not being elitist I'm trying to stop malformation of information, YES, he's released rap albums, DOES THAT MAKE THIS RAP? NO!!!!!!
@deryni21 true but it sure belongs to the hip-hop culture! just like jean-michel basquiat the painter is not graffiti art any more but it belongs to a movement, the hip-hop movement! though I agree it is not rap. but hey gil-scott heron was the first to set the base of that culture though it wasn't rap either just like last poets.

youd be surprised.
I saw an episode of "locked up abroad", true story, where a white guy got locked up in the sickest jail in mexico city, mexico.
When he played his guitar the prison boss heard him play, liked it and took him under his wing and protected him throughout his stay!
Interesting what Art can do!
