So beautiful, she was a great singer and I too watched this when it aired. That is also her husband they showed in real life too. Hal Halbrook. I hope he is doing ok now that she is gone.
I to remember watching this show episode,i got cold chills when she hit the hight notes.Of all of the people that has sang this beautiful song, she does it the very best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember watching this when it originally aired and said to myself "my GOD, what a voice, who knew?" well, God knows for sure now that the beloved Miss Carter is with him in Heaven and he gets to hear her sing this all the time.. well done Dixie !
I love this woman, so much..She was so mutltalented, classy, feisty and not afraid to stand up for what she believed in...she has always been and always will be one of my biggest idols...I hope one day when my time comes I am able to meet her...we lost one hell of a lady when she passed on...rest in peace Dixie, your sharing your hevanly voice with our lord & Savoir now...We'll always love you and remember you Dix...GOD BLESS
WOW! Dixie Carter was blessed with so many talents.I am most sure that she is singing for our Lord now and forever. God bless you Miss Dixie a true Southeren lady.
I remember the first time I watched this I was pretty young maybe 13-14years old. My aunt watches this show. When Dixie came out and sang. I was just stunned, almost on the verge of tears. Then my sister about 7-8years old says "look at the lady's big glasses." UGH! She totally ruined the moment.
@LADiEHAMO88 Aww, I know it was a moment killer, but you cracked me up! I had to watch the video again because I didn't notice the lady with the glasses until I read your pose!!
I listen to this song in the evening before I go to bed and when I wake up in the morning it's still playing in my head. what a wonderful voice she has.
RIP DIXIE CARTER........NOW IN HEAVEN SINGING WITH THE ANGELS.....LOVE THIS SONG, AN ALL TIME FAVORITE, ,,,,,,,,ITS EVEN BETTER WHEN AN ANGEL SINGS IT....IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE ONE AND ONLY DIXIE CARTER....FOREVER LOVED
@TheCoupechopper Exactly. Watching this as an adult, I can catch on to the inuendos. But watching it as a kid, it was a safe show and fun to watch b/c the things they'd say were so above the head of a child that you could just enjoy it.
I know this was lip sincing in a studio but Would have loved to have been in the studio audience to witness and hear this. What a talent and Dixie will be missed.
I wish I could find the clip of the earlier part of this episode, when Bernice so elequently tells the preacher off. She speaks of women's rights, and how after the crucifixion of christ, after all the MEN went home, it was WOMEN who stayed till the bitter end!!! Any help out there?
I ORDERED THE SECOND SEASON OF DESIGNING WOMEN BECAUSE I COUDLN'T FIND ANY RECORDINGS OF THIS. AND I, TOO, ABSOLUTELY LOVED BERNICE'S REBUTTAL TO THE PREACHER'S COMMENTS. I COULD LISTEN TO THIS OVER AND OVER FOR HOURS...
Diixie Carter was one of my favorites on the show, Designing Women. I admired her for the spunk that she portrayed on the show, and she looked beautiful, and respectful doing it. I only wish that I had met in person. I really liked her charactor.
You are missed Dixie, but we know you are in a better place full of love. Hal, may God comfort you with the knowlege that you'll be together again. What a talent.
how can I get a copy of this its my uncles request to have it played at his funeral, he said its the most beautiful version he ever heard hawkefanatical@yahoo.com
It is possible to rip the file from youtube and use media player to strip the audio. Honestly, though I agree Dixie's version is amazing, it's actually a "re-do" of Sandi Patti's original version, I think your uncle would fall in love with her... just a thought. I have the recording, I would gladly give him if he wishes. my email is blake.deveraux@yahoo.com
Whenever I watch this video, I end up crying my eyes out. It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, and it was my mom's favorite hymn, so it means a great deal to me. Thanks for posting.
I think this is just great, the networks would never allow this to be sung like this on primetime. Amazing show, but it went downhill superfast when Charlene and Suzanne exited.
I did not know that she had passed on. But I agree, she is singing with the heavenly choir now. Putting a smile on God's face with that superb soprano voice of hers. Wow...it brought tears to my eyes.
Dixie was an amazing and true lady! We are so blessed to have had the chance to get to know her. My deepest sympathies to Hal Holbrook and her daughers. Dixie was a true first class lady with a wonderful voice, the voice of an angel! I hope to one day get a copy of this song to be played at my funeral. I definately would love to have Dixie sing it for me! Love her! R.I.P. Mrs. Dixie Carter Holbrook. You will be missed, our Queen of the South!
OMG, This was my favorite episode of Designing Women. I just loved Dixie Carter SO Very Much, and every time I hear her sing this song it just sends chills up and down my spine and brings tears to my eyes, so beautiful. RIP Mrs. Holbrook and my condolences to your family, You will surely be missed! America loves you! God Bless!
I remember the first time I saw this episode and heard Ms. Carter sing this hymn. I cried then and I cry each time I hear it. Not because it's sad, but because of her talent. I have to agree with jaybird74, Ms. Carter singing to God's face, and Him saying, "Welcome home, honey!" Amen to that! She will be missed.
If you have never heard or don't remember hearing Dixie Carter/Julia Sugarbaker sing "How Great Thou Art" take a listen to this...... and listen all the way through .Truly awsome.
This was one of my favorite episodes. The plot dealt with women not being allowed in the pulpit in the Catholic church! Charlene was going to leave the church but came back to hear Julia and she tore this song up!
@ProfessorCDG1906 Amen! I loved this episode and this is my favorite version of "How Great Thou Art". Charlene's reaction at the end is priceless and great acting by Jean Smart. Very sad about Dixie Carter as I LOVED Julia Sugarbaker and use quotes from her often.

This was one of my favorite episodes! She had a fabulous voice and I don't care what anyone says, she was the master as public speaking. Talk about commanding when she got fired up, I could never wait for her light into someone who was closed minded or just silly.
04/11/2010 Dixie Carter has been called home. This is my favorite hymn that is so perfect for her lovely voice. I love watching her husband, Hal Holbrook in the audience looking at her with such devotion and love. I know that her love will be there for him always. I am so grateful that he shared her with us. God bless.
This is one of my favorite Designing Women eps (right along w/ The Rowdy Girls). Dixie had a fantastic voice. Had the pleasure of seeing her on Boradway (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and I was all giddy that I had seen Julia Sugarbaker, LIVE!!! RIP Dixie!!! :(

Doesn't she have a wonderful voice? I had the rare pleasure of meeting this lovely lady when she was appearing at Disney MGM Studios a few years ago and got to chat with her for quite a while - she is every inch a true lady!
So beautiful, she was a great singer and I too watched this when it aired. That is also her husband they showed in real life too. Hal Halbrook. I hope he is doing ok now that she is gone.
